When this song was released many years ago. I danced to it with the only woman I've ever really loved. We broke up. I got married. Got divorced. I looked for my true love only to find she'd just died of cancer. That was 21 years ago. I'm still broken hearted. If you find it..Take it and keep it. A broken heart is a turmoiled soul.

Love that usually Jacob's arrangements usually are complex and layered, but this time he decided to take a minimalist approach and used silences as another musical element. Like love is simple and hidden in unspoken words.
    Thanks.

That‘s because the original writing of Billy Joel is already as good as possible, perfect, so that you nearly can‘t add or leave something out. So Jacob didn‘t, because he understands that. He did not make this better, because that‘s not possible, he just the way he does it, also good, only different.

Jacob Collier's fan-base are the non-performers of the music industry, and his content makes fans feel their music inclination is elite and almost esoteric-like lol. He usually takes a good seasons it with all the spices he knows until the harmony becomes almost fully non functional. Then he replaces familiar melody fills with his short-burst trills which makes it unrecognisable, or at least do a soulful arp run that impresses the eyes at least. Lastly, to make the song recognisable he murders the dynamics when singing the chorus, by jumping from the softer mezzos to an overkill fortissimo, like he's yelling to the audience "Yeah it's that song! You know it, you know it? Right?". Then he'll do this annoying vocal ad-libs that doesn't match with his instrument fills. While I'm pretty sure he believes that he's building up anticipation and climax towards the chorus, he actually just wants to show-off theory that doesn't even show precision or technicality. It's just a clutter of impractical theory to feed his fans' delusion of music knowledge and comforts the fans' laziness in learning and judgement of music. He's music isn't moving, doesn't evoke emotion or memory, it lacks jive and groove, it's not catchy nor memorable, his playing is not passionate and lacks stage attitude. Not all songs make us close our eyes to feel the music, some songs you wouldn't close your eyes by the spectacle of the technical skills, may it be instrumental solos or mind-blowing vocals. Jacob's music can't reach souls, he can't make people jump, scream or do head-bangs, he's technical playing skills doesn't make listeners rewind. To me he's more of a Music-theologist that knows a bit of Practical and Applied Music. Nu-uh! Nope! Our boy Jacob's playing is not music, it's a lecture and an outlet of his unused and will never be used theory of music. And of course, his yapping is a band-aid for an unsuccessful music degree and career. I don't mind him doing that really, it is established theory and some are good to know. But, his elaboration and claim on the "Negative Harmony" and that notes used in pianos and most instruments aren't precise and that there are tonal variants between semi-tones, what a slob of hogwash and ignorance. Little man Collier probably hasn't heard a bagpipe, sithar, kumintang, didgeridoo, or calypso percussion. Talking like piano is the only instrument i the world and that he can even prove it by correcting it based on his perfect pitch vocalisation. That's an insult to an intelligence of a basic musician. Woah! I wish people won't pickup his style in innovating music in the future. What a pretentious little boy scout.

This is a wistful, deeply experienced reflection of a long term, hard won, devoted love. It is the rendition seemingly only able to be played by, for instance, an elderly man to his elderly wife on their 50th+ wedding anniversary. It makes me tear up. Love like this, after lust and decades and youthful hopes have passed, after deaths and sicknesses and struggles have been endured together, is like no other. It is a hardened, polished love made brilliant by a combination of pressure while remaining fully present. (How this depth comes through the heart of a young man is hard to fathom but not the most important point. Thank you Jacob for being willing to see ALL of the textures of life while maintaining your devotion to your core human principles. You are an old soul.)

    so emotional ...

i recently got a proper mic for my setup and when i go close to it ppl accuse me of having filters
so i recorded meself .... yes i sound more ..well... MORE
but what jacob does here is ....
his use of sibilants and deep vowels and just enough reverb
and not hung up on pitch allowing for a emotion
also knowing when to do the soft breathy ...
      its heaven
      i could analyse and dissect
      but we both know
its all the hairs on both arms at attention that counts !!!

Collier is only 2 years younger than Joel was when he released the song in 1977. My appreciation of Joel's rendition may be borne out of being a fan, and many hundreds of repetitions of the song, but I feel that Billy had a depth of the performance that spans the ages.

Don't go changing, to try and please me
You never let me down before
    Don't imagine you're too familiar
And I don't see you anymore
I would not leave you in times of trouble
We never could have come this far
I took the good times, I'll take the bad times
I'll take you just the way you are
Don't go trying some new fashion
Don't change the color of your hair
You always have my unspoken passion
Although I might not seem to care
    I don't want clever conversation
I never want to work that hard
I just want someone that I can talk to
I want you just the way you are
I need to know that you will always be
The same old someone that I knew
What will it take till you believe in me
The way that I believe in you
    I said I love you that's forever
This I promise from the heart
I couldn't love you any better
I love you just the way you are
    Right

Just lovely. He reminds me of Kenny Rankin, another master interpreter of others’ songs.

Nice sound, great interpretation. Voice of a jazzy Stephen Bishop on the high notes.
