About this clip:
Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jacob Collier performs his version of the 1989 Billy Joel classic “And So It Goes” during his performance on June 9 as part of the 40th San Francisco Jazz Festival, broadcast on Fridays Live.
--
About the concert:
From UA-cam sensation to global superstar, 28-year-old British singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jacob Collier has turned the music world on its ear, pairing his boundless musical ability with cutting edge technology to redefine the meaning of “solo performance.”
Born to a pair of classical violinists and music educators, Collier was singing and performing from childhood. He first made waves when the homemade video of his stunning a capella version of “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory became a viral phenomenon, introducing the world to his four and a half octave vocal range and staggering approach to harmony, overdubbing his voice over a dozen times to create a densely rich musical tapestry.
Collier’s GRAMMY-winning 2016 debut album, In My Room, hit #1 on the iTunes jazz chart in 23 countries and debuted at #1 on the Contemporary Jazz Album chart in Billboard, who declared, “Jacob Collier is blowing minds.”
A collaborator with the likes of John Mayer, Snarky Puppy, Coldplay, BTS, Alicia Keys, SZA, and Tank and the Bangas, Collier began work on his sprawling Djesse project in 2018 - a 50-song collection spread over a planned four releases, each devoted to a different part of the day, that features contributions by the Metropole Orkest, Sam Amidon, Oumou Sangaré, Ty Dolla Sign, Chris Thile, and Becca Stevens, among others. The third and latest volume was released in 2020, and these performances will likely feature music from the as-yet unreleased fourth volume.
To witness Jacob Collier live is to experience a visceral definition of “pure imagination.”

What makes Jacob such an incredible musician is his ability to identify the soul of a song. For every song he covers, he knows what makes it amazing. He never corrupts that core essence. He adds dynamic changes, elongates breaks and adds in immense extra flavour, but he never changes what makes the song work. In this specific piece for most of the aong, he keeps it quiet and simple (for his own standards) because "And so it goes" is not a scream of anguish. It's a whisper and close of the eyes. He then repeats the last couple of lines (the crescendo of the lyrics "and you can have this heart to break") and then really let's go and lingers on the most emotionally compoex part and takes us to the despairing depths and the climb back to resignation abd sadness. A pleasure to be alive at the same time as him.
In many ways he reminds me of Liszt in the way he could take pieces of his time and make them longer, more complex, but without losing the basis of the piece itself
Very well written! I often find myself preaching to people how lucky we are to be alive at the same time Jacob Collier is and how future generations will probably learn about him like we do Beethoven etc..! I must sound as mad as a flat earther at times! 😅
Exactly bro. There are people who are hating now, but in the future they’ll be studying him, just like Mozart Beethoven 😂 some people can’t stand when others break boundaries. 🤷🏾♂️
This pouring out of his soul is so beyond beautiful. Thank you🙏🙏
amen! thanks for checking us out. be sure to follow the channel :)
i LOVED seeing him last weekend. he's my absolute idol. thank you sfjazz
Jealous, wish I could have been at bonnaroo
just out here making dreams come true :)
This is absolutely genius
This soulful song coming out of those red overalls. I love it. Its so Jacob
My favourite Billy Joel song, thank you Jacob for appreciating it so beautifully ❤🎵🎹
SFJAZZ, I’m glad you picked this song as the highlighted single!
per jacob's request actually. artists know best!
So beautifully delicate and powerful.
jesus christ... this young man is splendid
yes indeed! it was treat to get him solo at the sfjazz center! and on the livestream series!
I loved this song, and I love it anew. Thank you for the reinvention and appreciation for the original.
Such a great song.
I appreciate the great talent and virtuosity as well as the soul and emotion here. There is also something to be said for the pure beauty, taste, and simplicity of the genuine article. Many times, less is more.
Speechless.................wowwowwowwowwow
Genius, full stop.
This is one of Billy's most underrated and overlooked songs. No idea why!

Billy Joel himself said this is his favourite song that he’s ever written. This is a nice version.
Backstory involving Elle Macpherson, maybe?
How do you think Christie felt about this song?
@@iroulis I think anyone having such a beautiful song written about them would be hugely impressed...
@@poppyrowland1385Most proud of.
such a great spirit
pure music good
Sempre um deleite
This must have been from a non broadcasted set. It sounds different from what I remember hearing in the live stream. Am I right?
Isn’t the livestream you saw still up for you to go check?
Jacob🥹💘
A lot of amazing phatness and harmonies here, I just wish he didn't go so crazy with it and kept the beauty of the original. Too much stopping and starting and just flamboyant needlessness
I thought I was the only one who thought that. Clearly he is extremely talented, I just think this was a bit overdone.
Go listen to the hundreds of people who did it simply then.
That's just him. He's that way with every song he's covered. That's his own interpretation, that's how he experiences the song inside him.
And every time 2:40
that part got me too such a weird feeling chord on time
Glad to see the alligator made it there!
Jeff Buckley
I don’t get it. This is like some modern art-we’re told it’s good so we believe it’s good even if it’s no good.
Eh
Love the genius that is Jacob but lately I find myself annoyed that just because you can throw a gazillion different chord variations into a cover doesn't mean you should ......
in other words .... he murdered this song and not in a good way .....
Yeah, in fact we'd even just called the cops... but then the song got up, took a bow, grabbed a flower, and walked offstage. We were gobsmacked
A cover is an artist’s interpretation of an established melody and lyrics. Seems like an odd thing to get “annoyed” by. Sounds like you prefer Billy’s rendition, which is fine. Jacob is going to keep doing what Jacob does
@@davisperry597 i like a little less musical diarrhea …. Interpretation is fine but this is just “let’s see how many complex chord variations i can pack into this song”
@@GizzyDillespee lol
Yes, perhaps the greatest young musician today, but his singing is definitely an acquired taste. His singing shows he is actually a human being. That said, I think he missed the beautiful essence of this song, an uncharacteristically good composition from Billy Joel.

I know you didn’t just insult Billy Joel as a composer like that. The Stranger as an album is great, but he has some masterpieces that aren’t just pop/rock commercial hits. He’s a great artist and musician.
“The Stranger” (the song)
“Summer, Highland Falls”
“Scenes from an Italian Restaurant”
“Movin’ Out”
“Zanzibar”
“Honesty”
“Lullabye”
These are all pretty great Billy Joel compositions, lyrically and musically. The music makes a statement, and he also takes inspiration from so many other musicians to create something new (he’s even credited Beethoven with one of his chorus melodies). There’s also a lot of songs that tell stories more through the lyrics (like “piano man” or “the entertainer”)
Only thing missing, a big round red nose.
just … no. absolutely not. also why is he dressed for kid’s tv
I’d be embarrassed to be you. A ton of music’s greatest living legends are huge fans of Jacob Collier. You’re obviously stuck in whatever time you came from.
Jacob Collier, so genuinely heartfelt. Musicianship par excellence & what an impressive pianist! Thank you!!!

I like the changed lyrics in the first stanza from "to heal the wounds" to "to feel the wounds".
I think it was a mistake, it wouldn’t make sense to want to feel the wounds.
I agree it was probably a mistake, but I think "to feel the wounds" would not only make sense, but even be poetically richer.
Without a question: One of Billy‘s Best Songs ever, this Genius wrote! Be sure!!

I was about to say that I've heard something similar from him. Thanks for reminding me.
I thought of this song too!
My favorite Billy Joel song! Incredibly well done, Jacob Collier is a legend in the making.

6:25 - is that a stringed instrument or his voice?!
His falsetto voice, mouth almost closed, eventually with some "f" consonant..
this one is among the best I’ve ever seen in a music video! Showing all his talent!🌻
He is a true gem!
Why are we all pretending that he isn't dressed like Mario?
Because we are big kids and stuff like that doesn’t bother us when the music is this good.
How to destroy a beautiful song in 4 minutes...that was bloody God awful. Don't give up your day job.
Insanely beautiful!

whoa.
Absolutely gorgeous, Jacob.
thanks for watching. be sure to give us a follow :)
He can take any song and make it his own. Such a beautiful arrangement. They key changes... Genius. The pure emotion he puts into it. Genius. We'll be seeing A LOT of Jacob in the future I know. My favorite part... "And you're the only one who YOU'RE the only one who (goes up) YOU'RE the only one.... Who knows. If Billy Joel heard this I'm sure he was beyond impressed where Jacob Collier took his song.
The musical ignorance floating out from fools in these comments is astounding! These comments are the same that greeted Stravinsky, Debussy, even Rachmaninoff and Miles, Coltrane, Eric, Keith... I could go on, point made!

Una delle mie canzoni preferite... Da prima che Jacob nascesse ❤
Understanding music theory and running endless scales. Bravo. Lmao
