Metroid: Zero Mission - Is reverse Tourian viable on Normal mode RTA?

  • Yes, the title of the video is clickbait. But I didn't want to spoil the ending.
    This is tool-assisted. For more information, go to tasvideos.org/
    This was played on 50% speed and using savestates, but only once at the beginning of every room. My intention was to simulate a "perfect human viable play", using only what a believe to be RTA-viable strats, by repeating each individual room until they seemed errorless. Obviously, there is still room for very small optimizations, but I believe my final result to be very generous regardless, using some somewhat hard strats and more-precise-than-usual movement. I don't think that any more RTA-viable optimizations would change the final outcome anyway.
    I recently got a comment on my old Alternative Tourian Escape LOTAD video ( • [OBSOLETED, READ DESC]... ) by user The Sedaiv saying that some day humans would be able of doing that on a real console.
    As much as I would like to see that, I highly doubt it will ever happen. And to prove my point, I made this.
    I think that, to do a run as good as this video, it would take tenths of thousands of attempts, and beyond human skill or suspicous luck; and as you can see, it wouldn't be enough. I don't believe anybody would be willing to put so much effort into something like this either.
    In the end, I don't believe humans will reach TAS levels ever. Of course, I do believe humans get better and better with practice, being able to pull off strats once believed to be TAS-only at specific and isolated points of a speedrun. But there's a limit to human skill, and no one can play absolutely perfectly for as long as 2 minutes straight. But that's the beauty of TASing: knowing that something is possible, but no one will ever do it.
    Watch this for reference: • SMB1 Any% Sum of Best ...
    (Also, I should have done a human theory TAS insted of this... Oh, well!)

    If you pause buffer on the elevators, each time you pause you’ll save one IGT frame. I expect that doing this on all three elevators could save enough time to make it possible for humans, though it is tedious.

    • @ElB0ludo
      @ElB0ludo  3 роки тому +3

      Oh, hi Scotty! Didn't expect this to catch any real speedrunner's attention 🤯
      I know that by abusing pause buffering you can save IGT time. I'm guessing I didn't use it because 1) as you say it's very tedious 2) it wouldn't make for a fun video 😪 3) it's never used RTA, so I just kind of forgot about it (the reason being, speedruns aim for RTA instead of IGT), my bad 😓.
      I guess you're right, this could be RTA viable with pause buffering, although I doubt anyone would be willing to do it.
      Btw, I made this video because people were commenting on my TAS of this that, one day, someone would do it on console, arguing that top speedrunners are able to perform what once were considered "TAS-only" tricks on RTA speedruns. While I know speedrunners are becoming more and more skilful, I just wanted to prove that one thing is pulling off a few isolated frame/pixel perfect tricks, with setups, in a RTA run, and another completely different is playing almost perfectly for 2 minutes straight. So, while this might ultimately be RTA viable (with pause buffering), I still think that no one can play MZM perfectly for as long as 2 minutes; except maybe you :^)

      I hardly think it is possible to save 4 seconds in Norfair.
      Anyway, this is as fast as I think any real human could ever get (maybe even a little bit faster). I don't believe any more saves to be humanly possible.

      @@ElB0ludo Is there a real answer for that other than it being a game? Because it does seem silly to me that only Tourian blowing up would kill her in Crateria, even ignoring that the planet is fine in Super Metroid, because like 15 minutes later you can go back through Chozodia and see that everything is perfectly fine and not blown up.
      It doesn't personally bother me because I do like the escape sequence but it does seem kinda silly.

    • @ElB0ludo
      @ElB0ludo  3 роки тому

      @@NamekianG If you think about it that way, yeah, it's probably just because "it's a game" and escape sequences are cool.
      To come with a reasonable explanation we would have to ask first "why are there so many doors that only open when shooting at them in a cavern-like planet?". I guess the game makers didn't want us to think too much about it.
      In a "canonical" way, I wouldn't find it hard to believe that the explosion could reach the areas in Crateria closer to Tourian. The game visually tries to convey this: the room between the Tourian elevator and Samus' ship changes color (slightly), and a storm begins in the room where Samus' ship was.
      Yeah, the game doesn't try too hard to make all this clear. But it's what you say: it's just a game. And it's pretty fun.

    • @ElB0ludo
      @ElB0ludo  3 роки тому +2

      @@ehx3419 you definitely need at least 2 power bombs to go from Brinstar directly to your ship. One to open the shinespark statue to go up to Crateria, and the other to pass the big rock between the ship and Brinstar. Even if you managed to shinespark to Crateria without the statue, which doesn't seem possible in the first place tbh, you'd still need one power bomb to get to the ship.
      Currently there are no know methods of obtaining early power bombs before Chozodia, so this possibility is discarded at the moment.

    • @ElB0ludo
      @ElB0ludo  3 роки тому +3

      It's in the description.
      I played the game at half speed, using a savestate at the beginning of each room and repeated each room until I thought I did as good as humanly possible.
      This is just a proof of concept. The whole point of this is trying to prove that reverse Tourian escape is impossible in real time, no matter how much time of practice you put into it.

    Is this only possible with hacks? I tried it but there is a block preventing me from going back after I kill mother brain

    • @ElB0ludo
      @ElB0ludo  3 роки тому +4

      This is possible without hacks. In fact, here it's done without any hack, just frame by frame emulation, but the ROM itself is a regular ROM.
      If there are 24 "enemies" (red rings + bullets from the turrets + mother brain) at once in the room, the lock will not appear. However, how many enemies are in the room at once is impossible to know in console, as most of them are off-screen. I had running a Lua script in my emulator that told me how many enemies where loaded at all times so I know when to go through (that's an advantage of TASing).
      If you are trying this on console... It's just trial and error. You'll eventually get it. I've done it several times before.
      And if you are thinking of completing this, do it on Easy mode, as the countdown is 3 minutes and not 2. I wouldn't want you to have to start over because you chose the wrong difficulty.

Is there a sure way you know to get it consistently without the enemy count you say you use? Sorry If I’m annoying you, but I’m at a loss here lol.

    • @ehx3419
      @ehx3419 3 роки тому

      If I randomly have it happen on my playthrough, I'll give Reverse Tourian a shot with a single savestate at the start. And by "a shot" I mean, about an hour of trying. (I might get invested though and keep trying beyond that. Also, if I get to the point you reached, I'll consider that a win and go the regular route.)
