    An improvement over my previous Reverse Tourian LOTAD: • [OBSOLETED, READ DESC]...
    The final time on the counter for this one is 00:04:94, saving around 04.66 seconds from the previous version. Time saves come from more polished general movement, more efficient shinesparks, and an additional shinespark. I do think this is still improvable (by a few frames at least), and I'll probably get back to it some day. But I don't know when that day will be.
    I actually recorded this back in 07/28/2019, but never got to upload it since I do not think it is that big of a difference from my previous version, even if it is still cool to watch. I am ultimately uploading it because I recently got back to this topic: I wanted to demonstrate wheter the alternative Tourian escape under 2 minutes is RTA viable or not, and upload a video with the results (this one right here: • Metroid: Zero Mission ... ). After uploading that video, uploading this one wasn't too much of an effort, so I thought I might as well do it. I'm also uploading this to UA-cam because I am tired of having to look for this on my PC whenever I want to watch it again.
    HELP ME WITH VIDEO ENCODING:
    As you can see, I upscaled this x16, to 4K, using VirtualDub. I tried to encode and compress it using x264 (x264fw), but any configuration I tried produced very ugly artifacts in the final video. I eventually had to use lossless x264 to fix it, ending up with a massive file.
    If anybody with experience with VirtualDub or x264 compression could let me know why trying to compress the video results in those artifacts, I would really appreciate it!

      What you say is overall correct. But I want to make a more technical clarification.
      The way GBA programming works, the graphics (GFX) for backgrounds have a designated range of memory addressed to be stored, and the maps themselves do not store the graphics, but an index to that address space that identifies the GFX to use to draw that part of the map.
      Most likely, the digits were stored in the same addresses in which that part of the statue is normally stored. As you said, the devs didn't account for those addresses being used for something else during any of the escape sequences, since it should not happen.

      @@ElB0ludo That's interesting. I only have a rather limited understanding of the GBA's programming.     • @ElB0ludo
      @ElB0ludo  Рік тому +6

      @@cato3277 I actually would say that the contrary is the most common case, at least in videogames. We have seen countless examples of conditions not being checked, even if it "logically" or from an in-game point of view would be necessary to be checked, just because the devs considered the player would never be able to be there on those conditions. To be honest, why would they need to check them? It would just add extra complexity to the program and extra working hours, for something that is never going to happen (until it does).
      For example, most Pokémon games do not check that the player has the 8 gym badges to let them enter the league; it is just assumed that you can only be there if you have them.
      Examples of the opposite, what you say also exist (I cannot think of any example off the top of my head), but I would say they are the exception and not the rule.
      In this particular case of Metroid: Zero Mission, it actually makes more sense that they didn't lock the door. Because they are allowing the player to go back, to farm missiles or save, after destroying the Zebetites. The player is not allowed to go back just when it enters the Mother Brain screen. The code responsible for loading Mother Brain is also responsible to lock the player on the screen. That latter part might not work because of an oversight; however the oversought case happens in very few cases and it is virtually random; very few players would actually notice (if it were not for a UA-cam video making it a popular glitch). I guess if the devs had noticed the oversight, they would have fixed it or locked the door as you say. Nevertheless, not having noticed it (which is understandable), having Mother Brain also block the room's door seems like an unnecessary hassle, from a developer point of view.

    • @MarioFanGamer659
      @MarioFanGamer659 Рік тому +3

      Well, the game did "break" in some way as the timer was never expected to be onscreen with the area name display and the two statues in mind (and also a boss battle as evident that you can fight the charge beam boss and the game stops the escape theme from playing even after the fight) but either way, these harmless side effects are really the only ones for taking the wrong escape route.

    What am I doing wrong? The hole you morph ball through to fight Mother Brain gets sealed

    • @ElB0ludo
      @ElB0ludo  2 роки тому +12

      Yes, I thought I had posted the explanation anywhere, but it doesn't seem like it. My bad.
      The gate/hole is programmed to close, so you can't leave the fight after you enter it.
      Due to a glitch, the gate can fail to spawn, staying open and allowing this alternative escape.
      The glitch, however, is really hard to replicate; to the point that it is virtually just luck. Either you get it or you don't. And, as far as I know, the player can't consciously influence the game to cause the glitch.
      Unfortunately, the only real advice I can give you is "keep trying". You'll eventually get it, but it may take a long time.
      *Technical information / glitch explanation:*
      The game can't handle more than 23 entities at the same time. This includes enemies, the bullets from the turrets, and energy/missile drops (I believe). If the game detects that there are already 23 entities loaded, it will not spawn more enemies. It will just wait until one of those 23 unloads.
      In the case of the gate, Mother Brain is actually the responsible for it to spawn. When you get to a certain distance of Mother Brain for the first time, she will create the gate entity and spawn it. So, additionally to her own entity, Mother Brain creates an additional entity for the gate. If, at the moment when the gate must be created, there are already 23 entities loaded, the game just can't create it, and will not appear. As Mother Brain tries to spawn the gate just once, the gate will remain "open" for the rest of the fight. The only way for it to reappear is to exit and re-enter the room.
      As a better advice than just "keep trying", I could tell you to try to spawn as many enemies, health drops and missile drops as possible, then try to enter the hole. However, since most of the loaded sprites are not seen on screen, you just can't know for sure how many sprites are loaded at a certain time (except if you use an emulator and other tools, as I did). So you will just have to "keep trying", regardless.

    • @ElB0ludo
      @ElB0ludo  2 роки тому +7

      As additional information: As you can see in the video, I don't enter the Mother Brain fight immediately (00:23). In those ~10 seconds (until 00:36) that I am refusing to get closer to Mother Brain, I'm just actually waiting for the game to have 23 entities loaded at the same time (I could see them with an emulator tool).
      However, how the game spawns enemies is "random". So you just can't try to copy what I did (i.e. waiting exactly the same time I waited) and expect it to work.

    Regarding your video encoding plea: I don't know what encoder settings VirtualDub supports, but in Blender (and by extension FFMpeg) I've learned that its usually better to go for _constant bitrate_ rather than lossless quality. Its weird: going for pristine quality tends to highlight encoder artifacts more, while going for constant bitrate helps smooth it all over a lot better since the information is updating fast enough. Hope that's helpful.

      Hard mode is just one minute of self-destruct timer, so this would have to be done in under one minute.
      I am unaware of any other TAS for this kind of alternative Tourian escape, so I'm pretty sure the fastest this can be done is 1 minute 50-ish seconds, which is way beyond the 1 minute mark.

      Most likely, the statues and the timer are read from the same graphics area in memory. Normally as there is no need for a counter, that area can just be used for the statues' graphics. In this situation, however, the area must be shared and the numbers are displayed as a side effect. It's just the digits 23456789 (2 to 9), so it has no real meaning behind it.

      (Veo que hablas español, te respondo en español que quizás así lo entiendas mejor.)
      No sé a qué te refieres exactamente. La respuesta más acertada, de todas formas, es "sí a los dos": es posible, y es un bug.
      Es decir, es perfectamente posible que en un cartucho original de Metroid: Zero Mission, jugado en una consola de verdad, se produzca un bug a la hora de comenzar la batalla contra Mother Brain que haga que no se bloquee la salida, permitiendo realizar la secuencia de escape por el lado contrario al habitual. Que sea o no un bug no afecta al hecho de que sea posible. No es un hack ni un cheat, que eso quede claro.
      Por otra parte, es un bug bastante difícil de realizar sin ayuda de un emulador: se tienen que dar unas circunstancias prácticamente aleatorias para que suceda. Y es muy improbable que un humano de verdad, jugando en una consola de verdad, logre finalizar la secuencia de escape por el lado contrario en menos de 2 minutos (lo que dura la secuencia en dificultad normal, y lo que he hecho en este vídeo con ayuda de emuladores). En dificultad fácil la secuencia dura 3 minutos en lugar de 2, por lo que un humano de verdad en una consola de verdad sí que podría finalizar la secuencia de escape por el lado contrario de jugar en modo fácil.
