The S-Class Reimagined | 2022 Mercedes Benz EQS

  • Rather than simply making an EV variant of the S-Class, Mercedes took the opportunity with the EQS to reimagine what a flagship "sedan" could be. Aside from the battery and motors, the biggest thing Mercedes did was change form. Rather than an upright stately sedan, the EQS is a "cab forward" aerodynamic wing in profile with an extremely aerodynamic vibe. It also has a hatch. Yep, a hatch, not a trunk. Toss in the latest Mercedes gadgets, a bunch of ginormous screens, and all the latest luxury doo-dads in the lineup and you have quite simply one of the best EVs in the world. If you can afford one. The size and price tag of the EQS combined with the pillow-soft luxury mission make this a category of one. At least until BMW brings us their re-imagined 7-Series that is...

Tesla, Lucid, Mercedes, and even Rivian are really stepping up the range game in the world of EVs. Only downside I see for these manufacturers are affordability. I understand why the start ups are so high, but when they start making affordable $25,000 - $35,000, they will sacrifice style and performance and so many will be disappointed. These guys are making some marvels of engineering though. I still give them kudos.

I don’t see that hypothesis holding water. Tesla, while still charging high-dollar for their vehicles and with rampant quality control issues (albeit getting less and less with time), is a case in point.
People are voting with their money and those startups are going all the way up.

The batteries alone cost $20K in most higher-end EVs - and that's manufacturer cost. You cannot get and never will be able to find a 100kw battery in anything under 50K, no matter how mainstream they become. This is why the actual future in 50 or 100 years will likely be fuel cells which can potentially be built for a few thousand dollars at that time and offer decent ranges.

Merecedes made a mistake on my C class on their warranty work and they apologized and upgraded my loaner to E class. Tesla on the other hand, they did 0 appologies and I was carless for extra 5 days because of their mistakes. Newest Teslas still have issues with build quality and it's just not worth buying Tesla bearing all these issues. Looks like you're using the price Tesla shows by default, the price after savings, with California selected as your state. No, that's not confusing at all Tesla... Absolutely excellent review and aside from motortrend, the only full review of the 580 as of yet in the US press. Thankfully, also a very neutral point of view as usual, kudos Alex. Just one question, I think there is an additional regen mode, auto regen, which varies the regen from full to none depending on nav data, however, that may be an european only feature. Again thanks for the very finest review on the net. I'm waiting for my selenite magno 580 exclusive to arrive.I was lucky to pull the trigger a few weeks ago and find an allocation at my local dealer. I have no idea when it will be delivered but hoping early next year. At this time they are very hard to oder if you can find one to order at all. Ill be sad to see my E43 go but Ive been looking for an EV that I can use in my corner of the world without range anxiety and from a manufacturer that truly knows how to make a car and the EQS finally fit the ticket.

EQS is the one I would buy/lease. The hatchback version is incredible, checks all the boxes. Alex, I think you need to focus a little more attention on aftermarket support. While folks generally love the Tesla buying experience (except when they double bill you, and don't return your money for months on end), Tesla owners don't like the experience when they have a repair, or get into an accident and need to get their car fixed at a body shop. For ease of repairs, I would buy the MB, you have the nationwide dealer support, and for accidents, your local bodyshop can get you back on the road quickly and efficiently. I recall when TFL had to repair their Tesla and it literally took half a year. If I had to buy a BEV today, and price were of no concern, I would buy an EQS 580. One final though on the DTC BEV brands like Tesla, Lucid, Rivian, what will happen when there is a nationwide recall, how will they handle it (and I don't mean a software/firmware issue, I mean a mechanical issue)

Nice presentation. You mentioned that you would buy EQS , I ordered it since a month already. Some people are not happy with the exterior design. I think it is Ok for an EV and the interior is the place to stay, I am more interested in myself comfort and not in the opinion of those from the street. Compared with Tesla EQS is however a car taking the tradition into the future and I love cars more than computers. I think it is better to build the new technologies around a car than around a computer acting as a car. Here is the strength of Mercedes approach based on solid background in the car industry. There are many people loving Tesla and Tesla stories and always will be such people. But clearly the competition will take a good slice of the market because the people are very different. For exemple for me the Tesla tablet and software were not enough to compensate the design, quality and modest interior. Surely there are others like me and this is visible in the number of EQS sold in only a few months. Probably for the next 4 years EQS will still be a valid proposal. After, we shall see.

I'll be the first one to give Tesla a loud ovation for their pushing the industry into EVs but I'll also be the first one to question the value proposition. Tesla's fit and finish, software reliability and phantom braking , are simply unacceptable for the price of their cars. Tesla reminds me of typical Silicon Valley computer companies, shove the product out the door in the name of first to market and for gadget marketing purposes but don't put customer's frustrations into consideration. I still remember the 80s and 90s when American cars' fit and finish and reliability put them into existential threat and were chewed out but Tesla is getting a lot of benefits of doubts with their problems.

I may be one of the few who actually LIKES the distinctive exterior shape of the EQS, but then I do subscribe to the concept of "Form Follows Function" free of unecessary so called "styling features".
