Im currently working on a personal library of materials and trim sheets. I gotta admit, its so much fun. It wasnt terribly difficult to learn. I essentially dissected a default smart material to grasp what was going on and tried creating my own. I made concrete since it wasnt in the default materials!
5:08 Something I've found about Unreal is that, if you're packing maps into RGB channels (like the usual Occlusion+Roughness+Metallic), by default the final texture will import in sRGB color space which can significantly alter the way a material will understand each grayscale map, and it will look off compared to the Substance viewport. You can check this option off in the texture details after you import it, and that will usually produce more accurate results
I see so many people worrying about not remembering at 100% how they build each one of their smart materials.. it's OKAY not to remember every single detail! I feel like it's a bit like recipes, you only need to remember how to read your recipe(aka nodes) and what are the mains ingredients...once you practice it a few times it will come naturally to you(as when making a soup or something haha) and you'll surprise yourself trying to improve it without following a tutorial
Hey. I genuinely dont subscribe to a channel when the video suggests it, but. I couldnt help myself this time. These were actually very logic, but very helpfull tips. thank you.
My first time trying Substance Painter, I ran into issues that masking definitely could've helped with. This all seems like it could be very helpful. A concern of mine was price, because things like this are usually hundreds, if not nearing $1K, but I'm pretty surprised that it's as cheap as it is. While I don't have the time at the moment, I have full intention to take the courses and try this out
Sorry for the random question, I'd like to get into Substance Painter and I'm wondering, are you always using the newest version? I know Adobe acquired Substance and I've heard mixed things :c Which version is the best? Are older ones even still available legally? If not I'll just use the newest one, of course, just wondering! Thank you
I enjoyed the video. I knew all of these but for real, these are no joke. About the game engine part of the video, honest question, isn't there a way to import the same colour lut the game uses directly into painter?
I think so - Mixer is gaining popularity (as well as some cool new features) so hopefully the software will gain more traction over the next few months/year. I typically tend to make videos about what's currently popular so I can definitely see myself doing some mixer stuff in the future.
I'm am trying to work on a door with a light at the top and I want the light to cast all the way down the door but get dimmer as it get to the bottom is that possible and is there a video for that ?
are Substance Painter *compatible with* Blender (the latest version we can get from Steam)?... i've been searching software for painting texture (or UV Map etc) or 3D Model for Blender, im still new
Do you have any plan to put out Substance Designer centric tutorials? Or is the focus on this channel on Painter? You talk a lot in this video about 'making your own materials', and that often best done in designer, especially if your focus is to become a texture/material artist. I know your course is focused on Painter, but is there any thoughts of expanding?
I'd love to have some more focus on designer! But its really time consuming. I'm working on hiring a few writers to help out with the video creation process & a new editor so that should give me more time to focus on designer & other fun stuff :)
Is there anyway to get access to your texture libary? 👀
Yep! Its available in the Coloring Book:

Interviewer: Did you actually made these materials yourself?
Me: Ye-yes!
Interviewer: Prove it!
tons of tutorials on internet but most feel just professional. you gave something which you have suffered and not want others to suffer. big 👍
People are painting way too many complex stuff but what we need was starting with very simple stuff and learn gradually.
It;s 2024 and it's still greates introduction to substance for beginners and great reminder for advanced users!

You can also set the substance painter view to the same view like ue4
I was wondering if you plan or consider expanding to also teach Quixel Mixer?
