disagree, some bands doesn't have an interesting bass to listen too, most of them only use bass to "fill something", not as a magic piece as they did here
It's not about the volume! It's about the equalization, the mix, the lines. For example, bass in iron maiden is way lower that in this cover, yet you can hear it better because of what I just said. Don't sound like a teenager saying it's a volume thing, cause it's not, all instruments are supposed to sound balanced.
Totally agree. Many times the great previous work of the Bass is not appreciated in the final result, and it deserves it, even for the weight and overall color of the song.
He's playing some really complex shit here. Even the "easier" parts are complicated... and he just does it like it's nothing. I'm surprised he's not eating a bowl of cereal at the same time. What a master!
Agreed, As a bass player he's one of the greatest... can't think of any others off the top of my head that really compliments true metal like Webster does... it's just above and beyond fellow bassists in my opinion, As a guitarist I can tell you I'd take more pleasure in learning websters material than loomis on full shred mode, He's in my top 3 of all time, Things he does on 7 string people wish they could do on 6 strings.... His style/Sound/ and scale use is my heart and soul poured into his ability... I love hearing Dimebag Vai n all them shred but Loomis makes it sound like theres something coming out of the depths lol... only thing that can bring a smile to our face on a consistent basis...
Not everyone is Alex. A bunch of guys play what the rhythm guitar does. Makes it fatter, but Alex treats his bass as a percussion instrument. A bunch of people don’t treat it that way. Accenting rhythm is the way to go, but do something other than play exactly what they do. Alex is definitely a gem!
Not trying to disagree here, but syncinc the bass with the bass drum beats is actually 1+1 in song writing/arrangement. That being said, Alex is a beast of another whole level, that's for sure.
I used to say when I try to describe how much effort is involved in death metal that there is a band with name of Cannibal Corpse and they have so unique style of technical fast instruments play that it sounds like bass is leading and the bass player is main composer of band artwork. It was my very first beginning of introduction with death metal around 2006

It's incredibly entertaining to watch Alex play bass, his hand movements are so eerie and quick. Now I just want to watch that one studio vid of his playing of Frantic Disembowlement.
al rod It is because so many bassists are the guys who play bass because there were two better guitarists in the band they were starting, and no bassist. Real bassists, like Alex Webster, Steve Harris, Cliff Burton, Getty Lee, and John Campbell really show how the instrument should be played. It shouldn't just be playing a simplified version of guitar. It should be the foundation, the bassis (pun intended) to the sound of the entire band.
Alex Wright it about being in the pocket man. I play bass and guitar and feel I am better on bass by far due to the fact I make it its own. I build on the fact that I am the tonal beef to differentiate the bass and drums to shine as they are and thats as the rhythm section. Too many bass players follow the guitars while a bassist follows the drums.
Bought one of his Signature basses when they came out. This exact bass actually. Used it to record ORIGIN bass tracks on the latest RE-Matered 2000 Relapse Debut. Never thought back in 1989 C.C. would get so HUGE! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
As much as I love Cannibal Corpse, I enjoy it even more when Alex branches out with other projects; I feel like his musicianship just doesn't get enough attention, and that's a total bummer.
Holy shit! I gotta admit, I haven't listened to CC since back in The Bleeding days. Alex playing back then was incredible, but fucking christ, I'm glad I stumbled upon an article about him today, that led me back!
I've watched lots of guitar play-throughs, but never a bass play-through till this. Really neat how different it is, and it really helps to show off the craziness he is up to in this song.
….some? Try most of them, they are a STUPIDLY technical band that gets their technicalities overlooked quite often because bands like archspire and rings of Saturn exist, cc gets about as technical as beyond creation, which is just insane
Jerald Hall I think that saying people are born talented puts down all the hard work that they put into their craft. Talent is knowledge build on years of practice, its muscle memory, its increased brain connectivity that comes with intense practice of playing an instrument. I think that personality has more to do with whether some one actually decides to put the time into learning. However, talent only comes from diligent work.
William Pryor it doesn't put down anything. That sounds like something said by someone who had to work very hard, much harder than most, to hone skills that came easy to someone else. That sounds bitter and disrespectful. Sorry, there are players who are born with good ears, good hand/eye coordination, a killer sense of rhythm and melody. They become better by cultivating that. Doesn't make them any better than those who don't have those things and have to work twice as hard to get it. Hard work period will get you where you choose to be. Having a natural knack for something, that natural talent-which does exist-just gets you there a little faster.
I want more vids like this one. I love to watch & hear Alex Webster playing bass. I hope Mr. Webster will deliver us more playthrough vids from the Conquering Dystopia album.
Mr. Keith Merrow , could you upload again the vid with Mr.Webster, but this time only with isolated bass track ? A lot of Alex Webster's fans would like to hear his isolated bass track to enjoy his thunderous and groovy bass tone. All the best !
Alex Webster, the reason why I started out playing with my fingers when guitarist-me got a bass. I was by chance reunited with a former classmate when trying out for the bassist spot of my now band, and i play bass more than i play guitar. Thanks Alex. You're a real bro. I had no idea Alex Webster played a Spector. I just got my first bass and it looks almost like this one except it has plain pearl fret inlays. I just bought his book and look forward to learning some extreme bass skills.
Personally I feel like the amount of low-end on the album version is definitely a sweet amount, that being nothing's "turned down" and you should be able to hear a good balance of all instruments, unless you're using crappy earbuds. In here the bass's definitely turned up because come on it's just Alex in this video.
any bass playthrough or cover video would be quite sad if the bass weren't at least a _little bit_ audible above the other instruments. in house, i run youtube through an old panasonic 5 disc changer with surround sound and a sweet little 8 inch sub, & i don't find the bass in the video overpowering. i think the main point of my original comment is that the tone & the nuance of the bass part can now be heard along with everything else, not just the frequency, although i've found over the years alot of metal album mixes to be bass deficient ( in an effort to keep guitar crunch & clarity, i imagine ).
Killer tune man! You guys sound so sick together! The guitar and bass tones on this album complement each other very well and make a huge, pissed off wall of sound. Great work!

Years ago when I was a kid I was knocked down when I heard the Cannibals for the first time - specially because of the Alex Webster's playing style. And nothing changed - I am knocked down once again while watching this video
Mr. Merrow, if you have them, I would like to see more playthroughs with Alex. Dont get me wrong, I love watching you and Jeff play, but I was excited to hear Alex Webster was with you two on this. Thank you, and much love :)

He uses three fingers it tough I don't know how he does it brutal
Alex Webster is always a good choice for a bass player
well, he is used to playing cannibal near 24/7 xD

I wish we had more Webster in the final mix of the album
Yeah I want the bass to be TAD bit louder. At least for the purposes of this playthrough.
I agree, I love the way it sounded with the bass at this mix.
I dunno, with it quieter, it allows the lead guitar to cut through a bit better. I think somewhere in between would be the best.
Much agreed. A little bit louder would be preferable.

What strikes me about Webster, apart from the insane bass skills is his humility. There aren't many nicer, down to earth virtuosi in music today.

Absolutely not underrated. One of the most recognized metal bassists. Rightly so, cause he is very innovative player.
