Thank you from keeping this beauty away from the average consumer. The price is a joke.
This price was clearly designed to appeal to "trust fund babies" - "Slumming it" in LA at art school.
Maybe thats the point.
@@slowpoke96Z28 When this camera was first announced, Kodak said they "hope to charge between $400 and $750".
This is not for everybody. just for artistic purposes.
This is a Ford Pinto with the price of a 2024 Alfa Romeo.
@@wx4newengland It's a rental camera. Hence the price. You are in reality meant to rent it, to use on a short term basis.
A 16mm camera would have been so much better especially for that price tag. Or even better come up with an all in one developer and scanner for home use because shooting film non commercially is prohibitively expensive
Polaroid did the instant movie film thing too. Never heard of it? Yeah - it was about as good as you'd figure...
Yaaaass ! A complex Kit or a super16 camera!! This súper 8 quality is for fun and consumer but is far to them
Over $5,500 BEFORE tax. Yeah… and most footage I’ve shot on Canon, Yashica, Minolta (and even really inexpensive cams like Bell & Howell T30XL alternative to Canon 310 XL) looks just as good/well exposed.
Then we start to get into elite super-8 cams like Beaulieu and Leicina… and still just a fraction of the price.
Let’s think about this - it is going to be $5900 after taxes… for that price, you could spend $400-500 on a very good Canon 514 XL or 512 XL (used for weddings with superior results) and, if shooting at super-8 standard of 18 fps, literally shoot 2.5 hours worth of footage (a feature length film worth of footage), get it processed AND scanned for less money… (and still have $1000 left over for a couple of spare cams and reshoot stock, etc).
The premise of a new camera is great, but it’s also really fun to use vintage equipment in shooting film (especially when it is already small/portable, like super-8 was naturally engineered to be).
And the price would have to be closer to $1000-1500 for the average super-8 enthusiast to consider.
I love the medium but cannot fathom spending that when there is already so much great equipment available.
I guess studios and pros will be the primary consumers initially… that’s cool.
Me? I’ll stick to Canon, Minolta (for cheap intervalometers), Yashica, etc…
Maybe I’ll float on board once the price is much, much lower. In the meantime, please keep producing great film that I’ll be using with fantastic, classic cameras. :-)
i just bought a canon 514xl for 10 euros while thrifting its almost brand new the only thing that's not working are the zoom buttons
@@lesleyhaan116 Hey! Very nice… AND guess what? The zoom buttons/feature most likely do work! Lots of people make the mistake of thinking they don’t work because the zoom doesn’t function on its own when the camera is turned on…
But the zoom was engineered to only function while the camera is rolling. So, hold down the shutter release/trigger, and then try the zoom. It was a power-saving (and weight - no additional motor needed) function.
Hope that helps… :-) You likely got a fully functional 514XL for 10 Euros!
@@VintageVantage79 thanks now the zooming is working and yes I had a great score it in such good condition that it almost looks brand new 😊
This is definitely targeted at people already in the industry. The consumer version will be out in five years or so.
@@lesleyhaan116 Cool!
This is such a cool look. What's magic though is when you get the film back and view it on your 8-mm projector. Then you can see just how deep the colours are.
I think part of the magic was the experience. The smell of the film projector bulb burning and the absence of sound. Your imagination was required to recreate the sounds of the events making an active participation rather than passive.
$5500 tho
no actually not. it's just a nostalgic way of thinking. My iphone 4 even did a netter job and someone with a bit of knowledge can create that look on davinci-Resolve or Adobe premiere pro
I was thinking the same thing. the film dust, washed out colors, film grain, the aspect ratio can all be created in post with video editing software or after effect type programs.@@apd008
@@apd008 ok I will shoot 8 mm Kodak colour reversal and project it on my nitzo
You can shoot the same thing on your iPhone 4 with it's rolling shutter and set up your digital projector right next to mine and we will see
Haha 😂
Hello Kodak !!!! Please make your profit by selling more at low prices instead of selling less at a higher cost ! So many people want to shoot film but the cost is almost out of reach . From photographic film to movies . I want to shoot large format TriX in 12”x20” but it’s not available . Film wants to come back full force but you guys are holding back !
I fully support you.
KODAK welcome to Ukraine too !!!
Here more and more people are asking for film and, preferably, at an affordable price
Over 5000 dollars for it though?? Come on bruh
I know right. It begs to be at the very least under a thousand dollars.
@@thecinematicmindcan buy a 60 dollar super 8 and get it processed and scanned at 4k and look the same lol 😅
For 5k I expect full auto everything and no jiggle in the frame.
@@videogametv7448with other cameras you won’t get an LCD screen and also crystal sync sound, which is unheard of with super 8, so yeah not the same. But I agree it still is disgustingly overpriced
You are not the target customer
KODAK Motion Picture Film is the best, a #MasterofCinema
Awesome! Can't wait to have one! I have done Super 8 of the Pope Paul the Second in Brazil when he visited! Still have the film today! : )
Very cool! I just wish there were more/more convenient options for getting the film developed and scanned nicely...
I love everything about this camera and was so excited to know it was finally going to be released. However It is far too steep of a price point. I have always been on the Analog train, but this is far too much even for people like me. If you want to attract more people into shooting on Super 8 by putting out this new camera, it has to be made affordable to the average person.
Even if it was 16mm it would be too much for this kind of camera
Love ya Kodak, and I'll continue buying your Super 8 (and 16/35mm) film, but even a diehard Super 8 enthusiast such as I can't justify dropping that kind of coin on this camera, even if I *could* afford it. Seriously folks, listen to me, *I am* in your target market, but even if I had that kind of cash for an analog camera, I couldn't justify spending it on *this* camera. For that price, I'm way more inclined to buy 3 or 4 high-end Super 8 cameras like Beaulieus or Leicinas, or even Nizos and Canons, in order to get way more features and with way better lenses. For that price, it should come standard with a newly designed zoom lens from Leica or Zeiss! 36fps? In 2023? Seriously? Beaulieu was doing 80fps with Super 8 in the late '70s. And it'll only undrcrank at 18fps? Why? And why is there no viewfinder? A swing out monitor is cool and all, and might work okay with the supplied 6mm lens, but what about when you need to get good focus in the daylight with a 60mm lens? Kodak, some of us have been waiting on this thing since 2016, and now that it's finally here you're gonna put it at a price point that'll only attract the kind of people that'll use it 2 or 3 times and then let it exist as an ornament on their office shelf? Or maybe Orange County trust fund kids who make skateboard and surfing videos? *Sigh*. I just don't get it. But, best of luck anyway.
Well said
You would hope for a camera made in 2023 the pin registration would be better
There's a light-leak in it too.
🎉🎉🎉 that looks so amazing !!!
cant belive this is finally coming out
What a LOT MORE unbelievable is that price....
totally agreed@@Sabundy
It's either Super 8 or an extra Komodo/FX6.. the latter will probably win out in most cases. Which it was more attainable, especially because it's Super 8 and not 16 or 35. Just happy it's out there though.
This is amazing! We can't wait to shoot with it.
Very cool 🎶📸👌
Fantastic
Summary: $5,495 USD
Not entirely sure why it's $5000 dollars. What sort of ground breaking engineering is happening to warrant that price?
10 years of circle jerk development.
Wish it had USB-C instead of micro USB. I'll wait for the next one.
Such a stupid thing to overlook. But then again at the price they are selling it 99% of all people will not be buying it.
There is a micro USB because this was produced ten years ago, and there is no next one because they just sell the leftover prototypes.
😭@@debranchelowtone
Good joke)))
I need one!
For the low low price of $5500 usd it's yours 😅
Bring on the 35mm REEL!
This is truly amazing. So glad it's coming back.
This would be a great camera to rent.
It's probably the only way most of us would get a chance to use it. Which is weird because you can almost rent a 16mm camera for a shooting at the same price
That is pretty awesome. I hope the price comes down for the camera. The film, that will always be expensive, but the camera, I hope it becomes more reasonable.
$5,495? For this price you should INCLUDE a dozen rolls of color film with processing! At least give some sort of incentive to the early buyers but not to filmmakers who can afford to buy this camera on a whim. Spike Lee probably has sneakers that cost more than $5,495! 🤑
Undoubtedly, the more inexpensive film cameras there are on hand, the more films will be bought.🎥🎬
Straight movie though
Definitely one to rent vs buy.
$5000 makes no sense. I would pay $2000 MAX for this, and even then, it would make much more sense at between $500-$1000. I can buy even the highest quality old school super 8 cameras for several hundred on ebay. I've even seen 16mm and 35mm cameras from anywhere between $500 and $2000. Still both less than this. I'd probably be more forgiving if this was a 16mm or Super 16 with these features, but a Super 8 camera for this price is ludicrous. I struggle to see the appeal. Those who aren't into analog filmmaking are much more keen to just shoot on their iPhone, while enthusiasts such as myself are aware of the alternatives, and knowing how expensive analog video is already would still find this unreasonable. I'm paying $40-60 for a Super 8 cart which gives me around 5 minutes of footage, and that's not factoring in development of said film.
3 min 45 sec
The compression on this video is so bad... 😢
you're out to lunch with this product. 5k!! You're better off buying a 8mm film emulation plug in.
KODAK EASTMAN.
OMG
Instantly spotted the jonas brothers 🫶
this thing clearly is meant only for upper-income-range artists. not for the non-rich. that said, i would like to see it playing back a 36 frame per second recording.
Avant de fabriquer une caméra kodak devrait fabriquer du kodachrome 40 ou kodachrome 25 .
I love shooting film. But for that price, this camera needs to be Super 16mm.
I’d rather buy 6 Braun Nizos…
Just wait for the super 8 projector coming out soon prolly priced around $10,495 lol
Love it!
I would like to know the background of these two clips: @0:41 and @0:44 Whats going on here, are they just clips for this collage or are they part of short films or music videos that I can watch?
I don't know if ill be able to get the new Super8 camera, but I can watch more videos on it by filmmakers and know their reviews with footages for the time being, but I love the idea of applying today's technology to this medium that gives more easier options, especially the LCD. I hope the prices in some time, months, year whatever, chill down so I can buy it too haha
Just buy a vintage super 8 for under $100
@@Eli_B3000 I already have vintage super8s and Ive already shot 12 rolls so far. Since this camera has some new features I wanted to see a video showing on location of a shoot, showing all the fuctions and then the results
@@DethronerX I see, well that's awesome then. This thing will probably just end up being a collectors item at that price, even though it looks interesting. I was expecting more like $1000.
@@Eli_B3000 Yeah same and considering it's plastic, 1000 is the max expectation.
People are 3D printing film cameras now so if this ridiculous pricing continues, it'll end up being people making their own cameras
Common Kodak.. $5000... really?
Why is the footage so badly compressed? Why are there so many shots with fuzzle in the gate? Please tell me that not all of this was shot on the new Kodak S8 Camera!!!
Selling the 2015 leftovers for a huge price !
This camera product seems targeted only at rental houses so rich companies can exploit the Super 8 look for their advertising campaigns.
damn that price tag is disgusting. Was super hyped but really i could just be patient and just use older tech for 1/4th the price if were talking high end film cameras. 1/6 if im using an old minolta or something. just extremely disappointed at how they were looking at 499-799 price range. Then a small bump of 1099-1499. over 5000 is absolutely insanity. Knowing kodak they're going to give a handful away and also let people test em for publicity purposes and a bunch of people are probably going to waste so much money on what can already be done without most of the so called "new tech".
question is: for a very similar price point, why would someone buy THIS instead of a Komodo, a C70 or a (cheaper) FX3?
Interesting price.
Somehow they scanned the material badly and converted it into a digit. There are a lot of highlights and halos, but it shouldn't be like this!
I shot on film and got the better quality. But fsuper8 unfortunately, the quality is still not up to the digital image. Can be used for hobby or if you want just play around.
Looks like for a USD 5,500 camera... and add 50 bucks per roll 3-minutes roll of film PLUS development LOL
Hi, is there any similar alternative to Super-8 that is not so terribly expensive for hobbyists (film material, development, digitization)? What I like about it is the authentic analog film look. It doesn't have to be so grainy or pastel-colored. But also not as home video-like as VHS.
Buy any other Super 8 camera. Fixed.
@@playerpage the camera is not the expensive thing when you buy an old one, as I wrote. But digitization and development are.
@@NunThree If you stick with Ektachrome you can lower your costs in the long run. It is less expensive to process and you can project it on your own machine at home. There are ways to do it yourself with the film transfer when you use a projector.
Tbh that is worth it. The features like 4:3 and the vistavision look. Stop with the yapping guys not like you’re gonna but it. Way better than the older super8 cameras
If this was 16mm it would be worth it
I would love this camera but the price is just to much!
Stop whining about the price! THANK YOU KODAK FOR BRINGING BACK TRUE FILM CAMERA. Now do it S16.
You guys absolutely demolished the fun and value of this camera making it so expensive
"The KODAK Super 8 Camera MSRP is $5,495 USD."
:/
Prince? Prince is that you?
$5,500....sheesh 🤯
this camera is so fucking funny
I love film and think this is great, but I'm hoping for a digital-only option later for less than $1,000.
Over 5000? I guess the average family isn’t allowed to have a super 8 camera from Kodak
Please make affordable film cameras
what is the logic behind the price tag? make sure only the top dog could afford it?
So they shot on film, scanned it, and then threw some cheap cheesy effects over it like showing a fake film gate. Did they know that one can also apply retro effects directly to digital footage?
Soooooo....all that can be done with some easy filters. How about spend the money on a Sony Alpha a6500 a couple of lenses plus other accessories and a license for DaVinci Resolve 18?
Great visuals... but the choice of music is completely off the warm, fuzzy nostalgia look. You guys need Boards of Canada to go with this footage (I.E. "Rue the Whirl").
I'll get one in 5 years when they're $1200.
Very nice, but at least half of this footage is a little disappointing for anything shot with a 5-grand-plus camera. Somehow I expected a great deal more in the sharpness department, given that it can use C-Mount lenses.
$5,500 you have to be SHITTING me
5 f**king grand, bro.
Amazed at how this focuses solely on the look the camera gets you (which is literally just the same as any other super 8) and not on the price or the fictional upgrades the camera provides ... or any details about the camera at all. You're paying 5.5k for a hunk of PLASTIC, a camcorder screen, and a MICRO USB port.
While $5k is a seemingly high, this could filter out those who are truly interested in film making from those who claim interest. At $32 to $43 per 8mm film cartridge, for 2.5 mins of footage, film isn't a cheap hobby to begin with. And I don't think that's including processing. Then again, maybe the price is a kind of reverse razor cartridge scheme, where announcing this product is planned to induce film sales and used Super 8 camera sales as the "gateway".
I love this look but look, my bmpcc can do this even better and digital. If you want to still at the market it would be cost 1000dlls (1/5) if don't, is your inversion to finish with us
I said us cause I'm the target of it and I wont pay 5k
Digital can never look like film. Why are you people lying?
5.5k…
They hit us with the reseller price :/
for a $5000 camera you'd expect something more than a sizzle reel for a commercial
The price for this is a F**kn joke! You could get a repaired/serviced Beulieu 4008 for way less!
The price point is designed to protect the aesthetic, so it cannot be spoiled by mass consumer adoption. It stinks but it also makes sense-- something so hallowed shouldn't be put out at a cheap buffet of social media imagery where its market saturation ruins its rarity and appreciation. I will have to rent if I wish to experience this very expensive means of picture making!!
Why this and not just a filter on a phone camera?
How funny would it be if they were just messing with us, and all that footage was shot in iPhone and ran through an Instagram filter, and all the purists were like "omg it looks so good! I can TOTALLY TELL it was shot on film! Digital sucks!"
That would be glorious.
Designed y Yves Béhar from Fuseproject and engineered by Logmar in 2016. Does Kodak have any part in this besides the label? Who manufactures it? Why did it take eight years to start deliveries of this uber-sophisticated product? The original price estimation was $400, now it is $5.5K, really? It is not an 8K full-frame camera with global shutter. It is a joke.
All the footage from 2016 when they were handing them out as demos to the average Joe.
So the project is not DEAD!??
Waited over 8 years just to laugh at the $5500 price tag. Dude Kodak, I can buy a BMPCC 6k, accessories, and some decent lenses for that price
Anyone with the wherewithal to be willingly robbed of $5K for this severely obsolete camera must be smart enough to realize you can make your video look like garbage in post-production, if that's what you really want.
Super 16 app . Come back and give me my like
21st century retro technology for the 'modern' Amish market. 🤣🤣
Too expensive for old technology.
For those complaining about the price, I get it. But also, a used Super 8 with sync is going to be $4k easily, or you buy a used camera and pay for the conversion. Had this come out five years ago for $3k it would have sold quite a few. Kodak might have missed the bus.
Oh my. I had very different expectations for this camera, especially at this price point.
It seems there is no pin registration (still have to stabilise in post like with my Beaulieus), the variable framerates are rather limited and the included lens is a joke. I can get much much better results with my Beaulieu 4008 + Schneider-Kreuznach 6-66mm lens. Oh, and I also have a custom built video tap system for the cameras so no issues there either. And the overall cost for cameras, complete CLA and the video tap system doesn't exceed 1500 dollars. What were they thinking?
from $400-$700 to over 5k 😕😕😕
Make a cheaper one that ditches all the useless digital stuff
2nd hand 8mm cameras already have that.
Cara Delevingne's great Grandfather founded the Black and Tans. Let's never forget that. Kodak it is not a cool camera. Try harder.
This is an ad for a product you're selling....and you're going to run UA-cam pre-roll ads?
Apparently the camera is only capable of filming people in their 20s.
Mission successfully failed…
IDK. Don't see the hipness of blurry video and posing lasting too long. You live in the 2020's, not the 1960's.
Absolutely ridiculous price tag. $5,495 US
$5500 ha ha ha
