👍 "When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible." I love that line.
I met my wife back in 1989, and we were friends for eleven years and finally started dating in 2000. We were engaged six months later and married a year after that. This October we'll have been married for 21 years... So Harry met Sally is our favorite Rom Com...
@@tuber2kh Estelle Reiner ... and more importantly, Carl Reiner's wife! She's also Tracy Reiner's (Apollo 13, A League of Their Own, as well as this movie) adopted Grandmother.
Very few perfect movies out there. This is one of them. Great script, great acting, great direction, and great music (that Harry Connick Jr. soundtrack is awesome). One of those genre defining movies.
The "pecan piiiiie" scene was improvised, and when Sally looks off to the side when Harry asks her to repeat, it was actually Meg Ryan looking at Rob Reiner to see if this was serious as she thought it was so silly.
I love this movie. It fills me with so much happiness. To see two adults struggling with love but falling for each other over time … it’s a beautiful love story. Thanks for watching and reacting!
My favorite RomCom............."I'll have what she's having" is one of top 10 lines in movie history......Wonderful reaction. Thanks for posting..........
Rob Reiner started his directing career with a string of well-received films including the hilariously brilliant "This Is Spinal Tap", "The Princess Bride", "Stand By Me" plus the three you've seen ("Misery", "A Few Good Men" and this one). I'm sure eventually you'll be doing those three! ("The Sure Thing" is another one). Alas his winning streak came to a spectacular ending with the stinker "North", lol.
@@bunpeishiratori5849 I've seen "The Sure Thing" dozens of times. I still quote lines from it 40 years later. It's in my top 5 all time favorite movies. ua-cam.com/video/S9UKlgvFnFI/v-deo.html
OMG you have to see Casablanca. One of the greatest movies ever, and Rob Reiner, Meg Ryan, and Billy Crystal would all agree. But this is a great movie too. Thanks for sharing it with us :)
The first romcom as we currently understand the genre (though not the first romcom in movies ever, of course. That's probably "It Happened One Night", 1935). Glad to see "I'll have what she's having" is still a funny line for folks who haven't seen this movie. Makes me feel less old-fashioned. :)
It's always entertaining to watch someone watching "the scene" at the deli. When the movie came out, the talk was about that scene. But the rest of the movie is so good. It's the romcom that others should be measured against.
The Harry and Sally table now has a huge sign over it at Katz's Delicatessen, so you can have what she's having. Or at least have something where she had it.
Carrie Fisher is also great in "The Burbs" (comedy/horror) with Tom Hanks and 'The Blues Brothers' with John Belusi and Dan Ackroyd she also wrote a movie (and book) loosely based her life "Postcards from the Edge" starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine. Her mom (Debbie Reynolds) and daughter (Billie Lourd) are also actors and her Dad was a actor/singer (Eddie Fisher)
It's a fantastically quotable movie (so many hilarious and memorable exchanges), and SO much fun. ❤ It's definitely one of my favorite rom-coms, for sure, and one of my favorite films of all time. Definitely in my top 10, I think.
Rob Reiner did an interview quite a few years ago and talked about how he cast his mom in the Sally faking it scene to deliver her famous line. He later saw a poll (maybe the American Film Institute) listing the most one liners in film history. In the top five were "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn", "Here's looking at you, kid", "Go ahead. Make my day", ...and he was so proud his mom saying "I'll have what she's having" was right there with them at the top.
I am sure others have mentioned but the 'I will have what she is having' woman is Rob Reiner's mother. That scene was shot at Katz's Deli in Lower East Side of Manhattan. Not only have I been to Katz's but one visit actually sat at the very same table, and thus ended up in several dozen tourist's photos. On another visit to Katz's I got to use the famous line myself when I ordered after my cousin (for the record it was a pastrami with swiss on rye, yum...).
Rob Reiner also directed The Princess Bride, This is Spinal Tap and Stand my Me. There was a decade where everything he did was gold! His mother said the line, "Up have what she's having. "
For more Carrie Fisher try "The Burbs". Another Reiner film you would like to (assuming you haven't already seen it) is "The Princess Bride". I have known so many Harry and Sallys through the 70s and 80s this was nostalgia.
Blush response confirmed … Deli scene is Legendary Meg Ryan. Good Grief - the climax of the film still gets me in the Feels - saw it in the theater and have watched it annually, ever since. Still feels like the Holidays for this Ex-New Yorker. 🤔 Mad-Tober suggestions - Have you seen Creep Show? Several stories in one Film. You’ll love the Crypt Keeper. 😊
I was addicted to this movie in the 90s; so, as I watched your reaction, I filled in the gaps :). I would have liked to see your reaction to, "I'm a writer, I know dialogue; and that is particularly harsh". It's also when I started to appreciate Jazz, Harry Connick Jr. is a stellar artist. Thanks for the reaction. Lovely way to spend an afternoon.
I enjoyed your description of good dialog; not everyone gets that there is a weighted balance there. I try to describe it as speaking the way you wish people would talk: succinct, in turns, and with just the right word occurring to the character just in time to say it. Nora Ephron was a master.
Rob Reiner's Stand by Me (1986) is also great! Please watch Billy Crystal and Bruno Kirby again in City Slickers (1991). The woman who said, "I'll have what she's having!" was the director's mother, Estelle Reiner.
Thanks for this great reaction clip! Together with the British movie 'Four Weddings and a Funeral', this one belongs to my favourite romcoms. I admit that I am not a patr(e)on, but since you really seem to like to 'dive into' romance, romcoms, personalities, characters, and even into 'matchmaking' (Carrie Fisher!), you also might want to check out the French movie 'Amélie' (originally called 'Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain'), made in 2001. It's another romcom, and it's a beauty imho.
Just stumbled on this, and reading the comments I am floored that not a single person mentions the masterpiece, Annie Hall, with Diane Keaton and Woody Allen. This is a very good movie, but Annie Hall is top tier brilliant on every single level. Won Oscars for Best Movie, Best Script, Best Director and Best Actress. This was no accident. If you haven't seen it, you should do yourself a favor and watch it.
awesome movie and equivalent reaction. Your a gem of a reactor in a sea of them on UA-cam your top tier. You know when to let the movie breath and when to interject without making yourself part of the movie. Cheers and regards
Excellent movie, one of Billy crystal's best, top notch reaction, thank you for not pausing and having a comment of everything, makes it more enjoyable to watch, hope to see more, take care!.👍👍
Don't know if it's been mentioned here yet. But a little movie footnote. The " I'll have what she's having" woman in the diner is actually Rob Reiners mother. Also, suggestion for a scary movie around Halloween I highly recommend 'An American Werewolf in London'
Lovely reaction, as always. A film you may want to add to your list is Postcards From the Edge, based on the book of the same name, written by … Carrie Fisher! (She may have done the screenplay too, not sure.) it stars Meryl Streep and Shirley McClaine (sp?), and they both do a bang-up job. It’s a comedy with bite. Peace from Ohio … (MacLaine and yes, Carrie did the screenplay. I looked it up.)
Let’s acknowledge Nora Ephron who wrote the script, based on a vague idea by Rob Reiner. Of course Billy Crystal added a lot of ad libs, like the ”I’ll have what she’s having” line in the diner, and Meg Ryan allegedly also had input. But Ephron’s writing here is kind of the blueprint for the modern romcom. And she revisited the genre several times after this, (though never again quite this uniquely, in my view). RIP, Nora. By the way, however good his dramatic movies are, comedy is Rob Reiner's home turf. His father, Carl Reiner, is a comedy legend, and the majority of Rob's body of work is in comedy. His production company Castle Rock produced the Seinfeld sitcom, for example.
Katz's Deli, where the "fake orgasm" scene was filmed, is quite possibly the best deli in NY. If you go in there they have a sign above that table that says "This is where Harry met Sally."
If you would like to keep your Rob Reiner streak alive I would highly recommend The Princess Bride another of his classics that is totally different from the three you have already reacted to. By the way the I'll have what she's having lady is Rob Reiner's mother.
Sorry I got to your reaction for this a bit late. WHMS was written by Nora Ephron who also wrote You've Got Mail which is a remake of the extraordinarily splendid THE SHOP AROUBD THE CORNER. Also for scary month and an essential Halloween thriller you've got to see 1957's NIGHT OF THE DEMON.
My personal favorite Rom-Com. A Halloween time suggestion: The ‘Burbs with Tom Hanks. Carrie Fisher is in it too. It’s a relatively lighthearted horror comedy.
It ended up that Rob Reiner wrote most of the female lines and Norah Ephron wrote most of the male lines. Meg Ryan was also uncomfortable with Billy' ad libbing his dialogue, but he kind of coached her along and she got better at playing against his off the cuff, improv performance.
I suddenly realized I may be a bit too organizational when I saw this movie for the first time... when Harry says to Sally, "You have all your movies alphabetized and on index cards?" and I thought, "What a great idea!" Lol. Disturbing. 😆🤣
Your discussion of what makes good dialogue is very interesting to me, as a writer myself. Real-life dialogue might evade or be off-topic. And this film manages that, while also at the same time fulfilling some essential characteristics of a good script. In a play, movie, or musical, dialogue must do at least one of two things, preferably both: 1) dialogue reveals character. 2) Dialogue should advance the dramatic action. That second one is tricky in this case, because our heroes spout dialogue we know (hope?) to be false. We want to see our two heroes become a couple, but their dialogue(s) both advance that action and also hold back that action. It's that push/pull that creates most of the dramatic tension here, and it's also what makes the dramatic payoff so worthwhile, when they finally begin to speak the same language (so to speak!) to each other. Furthermore, as dialogue reveals character, we in the audience are aware just how much these two are hiding their true selves. It's all very masterfully done, from the script to the direction to the actors.
Fun reaction, tyvm. Saw a talk show with Ryan and crystal on it. Billy admitted in the scene where Meg fakes a orgasm that he deliberately flubbed his lines repeatedly to watch Meg go thru her part again and again. She found that very funny. Btw, I'd like to suggest a scary movie from Korea called "train to Busan"
Hi Madison, A Meg Ryan / Tom Hanks movie you may not have seen is Joe Versus the Volcano, a quirky as all get-out movie. It was their first pairing together. Two more movies you may not have seen: Somewhere in Time (1980) and The Apartment (1960).
Watch it again, and this time observe the scenery, the background, the clothing, what was considered normal, how relationships where portrayed, the late 80`s "feel" if you will.. It is fascinating how shallow the 80`s are portrayed in movies by the niggling little details people miss because they are just used to how things are today, where the internet exists and tik tok, and people knew what the band Nirvana was.. They didnt when this movie was made... ;)
If you love Rob Reiner you have to see his best “The Princess Bride” if you haven’t yet. It’s a cult classic. When Harry Met Sally is my favorite rom-com of all time.
Two suggestions (films) to watch in October: A Quiet Place (2018) A Quiet Place Part II (2021) Mind you, it is one story, so it'd nice that if you watch the first one you watch the 2nd one also.
A perfect film - I relate so hard to this as a hopeless romantic wanting to meet that special woman. I knew you'd love it. Meg Ryan s/gotten an Oscar nod - this is her finest hour and such an iconic character and has such chemistry with Billy Crystal. I recommend SAY ANYTHING, ANNIE HALL & MANHATTAN as well - great job Mads. PS: In case no one mentioned it that's Rob Reiner's mom in the Katz' Deli ("'l'll have what she's having") - fun fact the 1st time I went there I sat at the table they were at (they have a sign hanging from the ceiling over it and I didn't know it at first :D Q: Is there a reason you muted the word 'sex'?
Thank you for doing this today, but I came across it too early in the day, so I put it to the "side" until I was ready to really enjoy it later(now.) "A 'Madison movie reaction,' 'Straw Berry Kush' and 'Mallomars.' What could be better?"
Great reaction, Madison. If you like Rob Reiner I would recommend The Princess Bride or Stand By Me if you haven't seen them yet. I think Carrie Fisher got more involved in writing after Star Wars, which is why you don't see her in many movies.
I loved your reaction. Given your fondness for this particular trope, I am I right to infer that you're a fan of Much Ado About Nothing? (Any version?) The writing, of course, was the incomparable Nora Ephron.
👍
"When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible."
I love that line.
One of my best friends used that line is his wedding vows this year!

THE greatest. I'm not even a romance fan, but I love this film.

And that lady is Reiner's (the director's) mom btw.

Hi Madison,
A Meg Ryan / Tom Hanks movie you may not have seen is Joe Versus the Volcano, a quirky as all get-out movie. It was their first pairing together.
Two more movies you may not have seen: Somewhere in Time (1980) and The Apartment (1960).
Meg Ryan is incredible in Joe vs the Volcano!
You should definitely cultivate the not caring what people think thing, you could seriously pull it off. Just flash the big smile and disarm them!
As a writer I would think you would have mentioned Nora Ephron the brilliant screenwriter of this piece.
I don't like rom coms . That's my sisters thing . But this movie is a gem . Saw it when it came out and love it to this day. Thanks Maddy.
Madison, this movie scared the pants off me: MIDNIGHT LACE starring Doris Day and Rex Harrison. Add that to October viewing.
Love this review Madison, thanks! Such a classic movie. :)

Now that you've seen this, you've gotta check out "Sleepless in Seattle."
Carrie Fisher is/was Hollywood’s biggest script doctor for years.
Nora Ephron is to romantic comedy what Aaron Sorkin is to drama, and Rob Reiner has directed for both of them.
I loved your reaction. Given your fondness for this particular trope, I am I right to infer that you're a fan of Much Ado About Nothing? (Any version?)
The writing, of course, was the incomparable Nora Ephron.
I love this movie
The restaurant fake orgasm scene is legendary! BTW, the lady who said, "I'll have what she's having" was Rob Reiner's mother!
The movie every friend-zoned person has tried to use on that friend their secretly in love with 😂
thanks for reaction
