I can count on my one hand all the romantic comedies I’ve watched in my life (it’s just not a genre I care for), but When Harry Wet Sally is one of my all time favorite movies.
Great reaction. My suggestion that I think you would love is "Moonstruck" (1987) staring Cher and Nicholas Cage. Cher won the Oscar for best actress in this role. Very funny situations, beautiful music, great performances....a joy to watch.
Fun Fact: The movie was actually supposed to end very bitterly (with Harry and Sally breaking up and going their separate ways), as that was Rob Reiner's (the film director) perspective and view on love at the time following a very nasty split from a long relationship he had. He initially made the movie to show off his jaded and cynical sense of humor, however while he was making "When Harry Met Sally", he met a woman that he grew close to, with whom he would end up proposing to and marrying by the end of the film's production. So as a result of him falling in love and getting a positive new perspective on love, he decided at the last minute to change the ending to the one that we wound up with of Harry and Sally reconciling, getting married at the end, and living happily ever after! That's why this movie has stood the test of time when it comes to most other Rom Coms: It follow conventions, yet DEFIES expectations!
I highly recommend reacting to 50's rom coms starring the iconic duo Rock Hudson and Doris Day such as "Pillow Talk". They remained really good friends until Rock Hudson's death in 1985 and their movies are a joy to watch.
Arguably the greatest Rom-Com in Cinematic History, and a great film overall. Brilliant writing, excellent direction, and an absolutely stellar cast (and I'm pretty sure this movie made Meg Ryan "America's Sweetheart" for several years afterward, with good reason).😍
Billy Crystal is in a lot of watchable films, from the City Slickers movies, to the dark comedy Throw Momma from the Train, and another romcom America's Sweethearts starring John Cusack and Catherine Zeta Jones.
Do you get chills when you hear bagpipes, too? You probably have Scottish ancestors. Both my parents did, so my siblings and I got a double dose, and one night, as we were sitting down to dinner, the radio started playing a bagpipe tune. My sister yelled "Quick! Turn it off! Bagpipes make me cry!" And the rest of us all said, "You, TOO?" at the same time. It turned out we also cried at Auld Lang Syne. All of us: 4 kids and both parents. We always had, but until that night nobody knew that anyone else in the family was like this. So I took an informal survey among my friends, and without fail, the ones who reported tears or goose bumps from Scottish music had Scottish blood. The ones who didn't were unaffected. It was a very limited survey; not big enough to prove anything, but it's interesting.
Ollie, the girl playing Helen is one of the many stars in the huge cast of amazing, Parenthood starring Steve Martin (and many others). That’s a mustsee.
One of the biggest déjà vu movies of my life. As explained in the October 1989 issue of Premier magazine, ~16 of its story elements had already occurred in Woody Allen’s ANNIE HALL and MANHATTAN.
One thing: I always think if Mr. Klein died leaving a wife and three children, there's a good shot they're keeping the apartment. They could move in with family, I suppose.
Thanks, Oliver! 🎆 All hail Nora Ephron's writing and Rob Reiner's directing. ෴ Happy 2024 to you and yours! May your future be filled with peace, pleasure and productivity.
Watch City Slickers! That is a great movie with Billy Crystal and also Bruno, his best friend in this movie! You will love it. Jack Palance is also in City Slickers.
Complicated mature romance in picturesque NYC with jazz background is classic Woody Allen style in the 80s. Reiner's version is more light and happy. (See also Hannah & Her Sisters (1986), also with small role for Carrie Fisher.)
Dialogue, realism, humor, irony, nihilism, love, story, music, family, humanism.....this has it all. Todays Hollowwood has nothing left but the nihlism.
I would watch a Princess Bride reaction even if you’ve seen it before. Also check out City Slickers with Billy Crystal and Bruno Kirby (from this movie) as well as Daniel Stern (from Home Alone).
Happy New Year! Thank you for reacting to this amazing motion picture! And in case you didn't see it, Billy Crystal just received the Kennedy Center Honor and Meg Ryan was one of the people celebrating his life and career (PS The "pepper talk" scene was improvised). Here's most of what she said... ua-cam.com/video/byErCnjbKWM/v-deo.html
So, Nora Ephron’s movies are all about how culture creates perceived reality, usually about love and sex. So philosophically they’re similar David Cronenberg’s cyberpunk era, about how technology changes human nature-especially sexuality. But WHMS is in fact a counterpoint to Videodrome. In other words, movies and technology do not create expectations about relationships and sex. Instead several couples repeat their relationships with a focus on their first meeting, which in turn make that moment seem important. In other words, technology does not actually shape our perception around it. Human beings have been doing it already through folk tales, legends, myths, and art. At least according to Nora Ephron.
Since you asked. My favorite RomCom is also a mixed genre movie. It is equal parts RomCom, Revenge thriller, Psychodrama and Greek Tragedy. And I would love to see your reaction to it. Being a recent (2019/2020) movie you may have already seen it but if you haven't there are many who would be drawn to your channel if you reacted to PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN.
If you like Billy Crystal please react to “City Slickers”. Billy’s friends take him on a cowboy vacation; they learn to ride horses, etc. it’s so funny.
Re-reactions are great; if you can remember, you can have more insightful commentary; if you don't remember that much, it's not that different from an initial reaction. You should do it (when you have time).
No one ripped off Annie Hall. There being similarities does not mean it's a copy. There are a handful of movie genres. Within those genres, there are a handful of stories that keep being done over and over again for the last 100 years. The secret is to make the telling of a particular story interesting. This movie does that.
"I'll have what she's having." Fun Fact: Joe is played by Steven Ford, the son of 38th U.S. President Gerald Ford. Hot Take Fact: The scene where we see all four lead characters talking to each other individually on various telephones took sixty takes to nail. NFL Enthusiast Fact: The footage from the football game was the New York Giants vs Detroit Lions from October 16, 1988. The New York Giants won 30-10. Location Location Fact: The orgasm scene was filmed at Katz's Deli, an actual restaurant on New York's E. Houston Street. The table at which the scene was filmed now has a "Where Harry Met Sally ...Hope You Have What She Had!" plaque. That's Hot Fact: For the infamous fake orgasm scene, the original script called for Harry and Sally to merely talk about women faking an orgasm, until Meg Ryan suggested that Sally actually fake an orgasm at the table. Director Rob Reiner loved the idea and put it into the script. In a November 2, 2004 interview with NPR, writer Nora Ephron credited Meg Ryan not only with the idea of faking an orgasm in the famous restaurant scene, but also with the idea of setting it in a restaurant in the first place.
This is part of Rob Reiner’s epic directorial run that included Spinal Tap, Princess Bride, Stand By Me, Misery, and a Few Good Men.
I can count on my one hand all the romantic comedies I’ve watched in my life (it’s just not a genre I care for), but When Harry Wet Sally is one of my all time favorite movies.
Yeah there is something about it that is so special!
@@RolyPolyOllieReactionsthat “something”’s name is: BILLY CRYSTAL!
The woman who says "I'll have what she's having," is Rob Reiner's mom in a cameo.
“Cameo” LOL
Great reaction.
My suggestion that I think you would love is "Moonstruck" (1987) staring Cher and Nicholas Cage.
Cher won the Oscar for best actress in this role. Very funny situations, beautiful music, great performances....a joy to watch.
Yes! One of my favorite movies of all time!
Another absolutely classic Billy Crystal movie is City Slickers. I think you'd enjoy reacting to that.

More like it would have been an even bigger watered-down ripoff of "Annie Hall" if it ended that way, lol
This is not *a* romcom movie. This is *the* romcom movie. All other romcoms that have since been made owe it a debt of gratitude.
Your reaction to them getting together at the end fills my heart with joy. Wondeful reaction.
I highly recommend reacting to 50's rom coms starring the iconic duo Rock Hudson and Doris Day such as "Pillow Talk". They remained really good friends until Rock Hudson's death in 1985 and their movies are a joy to watch.

As others have said, Pillow Talk is a great early rom com.

What a lovely reaction, especially at the final.

Love your reaction! This is one of my favorites and I’m glad that you enjoyed it as well.
Did you watch “the boys” when you see young Meg Ryan you can see that Jack Quaid is basically her with slightly less hair.
Broadcast News (1987)
How can it only have happened three weeks ago and Harry have had time to see an archaeologist for a while between that and Marie and Jess's wedding?
You are wise beyond your years Oliver. Thanks for just being you.
You must react to, War Of The Roses (1989). Love your reactions!
I love this movie. Great reaction.
As not a big fan of rom com's....this has by far always been my favorite.

@16:09 Same Director did Misery and Stand By Me, both by Stephen King.
Happy New Year Ollie, if you like phone calls in movies please watch and review Pillow Talk (1959) Thank You
Watch City Slickers! That is a great movie with Billy Crystal and also Bruno, his best friend in this movie! You will love it. Jack Palance is also in City Slickers.
Maybe "Fright Night" from 2011 next time? With Colin Farrell and David Tennant.

I think this is the second time that Billy Crystal is in when Harry met Sally after, the princess bride.
Huh ?

I don't think that movie is a romcom.
That is a great under appreciated movie. Not a romantic com. He should watch it when he's in the mood for an intense movie.
@@Lensmaster1 the movie has many genres. But stuck right into the center of it is an undeniable romcom.
