My favourite thing about this movie is that they don’t fall in love at first sight, at second sight or at third sight. It’s very realistic in that sense
Same! It’s so cheesy but this is how my parents got together, they went to high school together, my dad was a trouble maker and my mum was a bit of a goody two shoes. Dad joined the navy and mum went to Canada and became a childrens nurse. Mum ended marrying a Canadian man that didn’t work out (they had no kids). She came back to her small town for Christmas and ran into my dad who immediately recognised her. They had know each other since they were 13 and then ended up getting into a romantic relationship in their mid 30s. You never know who you’ll end up with ❤
This is such a fave for me, because their romance is _earned_ in the truest sense. They didn't look across a room and fall for each other right away, but spend the whole movie dealing with a set of stupid contrivances that kept them apart. They _learned_ to like each other first, and then to love each other. This one is a classic, and I'm so glad you gents enjoyed it.
Billy Crystal was the BIG name for this movie at the time. He was a famous standup comedian, a popular member of SNL, a movie star with lots of hits, a stage actor, and one of the most popular long running hosts of the Oscar Awards (although that came later). He was a big deal. I know Zuff was surprised that he was a rom com “leading man” but his casting was heavy on the comedy / personality focus of rom com. Think along the lines of Adam Sandler in the wedding singer/ 50 first dates, or Jimmy Fallon in fever pitch (all rom coms with Drew Barrymore). Even Jack Black in the Holiday (since you guys just watched it). This was sort of the precedent. This and Woody Allen films (but let’s not talk about those 😬😂).
He got his big start on SOAP playing one of the first opening gay men on TV who was regular member of he cast and who wasn't there just to be the butt of jokes. I mean he was but not just that.
U know I've been watching u guys for too long when ur waiting for Zuff's speech about how he wants a relationship after watching a romance movie 😂 but Bryce and Rob's faces after everything Zuff was saying in this movie had me dying
I'm a 55 year old woman. I saw this movie in the theater when it came out. It's a great movie! And I love that young people today are discovering it and loving it too!
This is why therapist's say you should marry someone who is also your friend. You need the emotional intimacy of being able to share all your thoughts, feelings, and vulnerability with your partner. It really can happen this way. My husband and I are coming up on our 20th wedding anniversary in June. We met when we both worked as Barnes & Noble booksellers. We were casual friends for 3 years and when I had a bad breakup, he was there for me. We started talking on the phone for hours about relationships and what I wanted but didn't get in the last relationship. It was then we both realized how much we had in common, had similar goals, interests, dreams for the future, and values. We dated and then lived together for 5 more years. Saved for the dream wedding. We've been through a lot of life's slings and arrows together since then. After all this time, I can tell you young guys from experience that it is real friendship that makes it last. 💘
When they are doing the weird voices at the museum at 16:34, that was mostly improvised by by Billy Crystal and there is even a quick moment where Meg Ryan looks to her right and laughs and she was looking at the director Rob Reiner who was telling her to play along. Also the last interview scene was completely improvised as well. This movies trivia/backstory is really interesting if you would like to know more there is a really good Rewatchables by The Ringer podcast episode about it! Anyway this is my favourite movie, I'm glad you guys enjoyed!
Lol It was great to see you all so blindsided by the orgasm scene. That’s definitely the most famous scene from this movie, even for those who’ve never watched it.
Definitely recommend watching While You Were Sleeping!! It's a great movie to watch in between Christmas and New Years. It has Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman in it.
For a Sandra Bullock romcom, I recommend Two Weeks Notice over While You Were Sleeping. I never got the hype over WYWS…I found it kind of boring. Now, 2 Weeks Notice cracks me up!!
@@Sara01977 I love while you were sleeping! The Chicago backdrop, the hijinks, the silly family characters! I think I’ve seen it a dozen times, 2weeks notice, I’m not a Hugh fan so…it’s dry
You’ve definitely heard at least a version of that line at the end from Harry. In the episode of Ted Lasso where he convinces Roy to come back and coach, Ted uses a variation among the many, many romcom quotes he throws at Roy. (“When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life coaching with someone, you want the rest of your life to start ASAP.”)
Billy Crystal was close friends with Robin Williams and Whoopi Goldberg. Together this trio for many years did a comedy show that raised money and awareness for poverty called Comic Relief
Billy crystal is NOT a convincing 20 year old 😂 Lowkey I prefer it when they make an actor look younger by just putting them in a formerly stylish wig, rather than the weird de-aging cgi. It’s 1. Way funnier 2. Less creepy Friends did it the best though!
I feel the same way after watching these kinds of movies. They gets me in the feels, and then reality hits, and I'm like.... nahhhhh it's better to be single.
I’m soooo glad you guys finally watched this one!! In my opinion, the greatest Romantic Comedy of all time. So much of the writing and filmmaking is just so fun, all of the split screen edits with Harry and Sally on the phone, and especially the “after sex” dual phone calls with Jess and Marie, the writing is just so quick and witty. About halfway through I was starting to get nervous about whether you liked it or not because it wasn’t getting as many laughs as I expected! Glad to hear that wasn’t the case 😂
This is one of my favorite movies ever! Definitely a comfort movie. I've seen it a million times. Loved your reaction to this! Originally, Harry and Sally weren't suppose to end up together. But during the filming of the movie, the director fell in love in real life and changed the ending of the movie so they do end up together!
Just started and am wondering what’s Zuff going to say this time 😂 Once you guys feel comfortable with movies, maybe you could watch some OLD Old Hollywood movies? Casablanca, Roman Holiday, Charade, and An Afair to Remember are some of my favorites from the 1950s and 60’s.
I tried watching Casablanca but kept pausing because of how boring it was. Still haven't finished it and this was more than 2 months ago. At what point is it supposed to get better
Fell in love with you guys during your Ted Lasso reactions. So don’t be impatient, Zuff, you’re young and your queen will come. But it certainly won’t be me! Way too old! 🫠 I have sons older than you guys! 😊
I watch this every new year's eve! I have to agree with Zuff, this movie makes you want to find your person. Hopefully it won't take 12 years and 3 months 😅
The "Before..." trilogy is my favorite trilogy of all time. I'm so excited you're going to be watching at least Before Sunrise, but I highly suggest watching all 3.
Yay! This and Before Sunrise are such disarmingly sweet stories. They feel real, or at least possible. There is so much wisdom for young people weaved in. There’s a quote from Before Sunrise that I think about a lot “you have to resign yourself to the awkwardness of life. Only if you find peace within yourself will you find true connection with others.” Basically, don’t be afraid to be “cringe,” and maybe you’ll be confident enough to fake orgasm in a busy restaurant 😂
Second date with hair-flossing guy: She wasn't going to have a second date with him. She was going to continue trying to date with new people. Orgasm scene: She was thinking she was going to prove her point. I love how she could do that and not be embarrassed after years ago being embarrassed by accidentally making the "good sex" remark too loudly. Character growth. She deserved an Oscar for the deli scene alone.
The director, Rob Reiner, had previously worked with Billy Crystal in The Princess Bride (the greatest, most charming, and wittiest movie of all time). Hope you guys don’t go another year without watching it.
As a kid born in 1983 with older siblings, the clothes and styles in this movie are just great. The late 90s were the height of fashion, so we've found in the future. 25:45 Helen looks great, I'm 100% certain I watched my older sister dressed exactly like that going to a date or job interview, setting up her all-new Sony DISCman, it plays CDs instead of cassettes, wow!
i suggest Marty (1955), Charade (1963), Roman Holiday (1953), Say Anything (1989), The Sure Thing (1985) for romances/romcoms. cant wait for Before Sunrise, please do the full trilogy
Billy Crystal as “Harry” iconic since the 70s comedian. Movies, Broadway, comedy albums, numerous awards. He’s done it all. Master comedic storyteller. Stand up comic. Being honored at Kennedy Center soon to be televised. 🔥
The “as soon as you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible” line probably sounds familiar because it was used in red lasso but he was saying “as soon as you know you want to coach with someone…”
One of my all time favorite rom coms!! I especially love Jess and Marie: that instant comfort level is hard to find!! (Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal are awesome too!)
I love Zuff’s giddiness at this movie. It’s a really well done time skip romance! I’m not sure if you’ve seen it but my favorite Rom Com is My Best Friend’s Wedding with Julia Roberts. Made me realize I like rom coms!
3:50 is why I love this channel. The faces Rob and Bryce make at Zuff 😂- So glad you guys did this one, it's so iconic. The witty dialogue about relationships is my favourite part. The oldies had some of the best rom coms...I think some have been mentioned in the comments like "My Best Friend's Wedding" and "Notting Hill" (it's one of the best in my opinion). If you ever want another Meg Ryan one then "Sleepless in Seattle" would be a good one for Zuff haha. Looking forward to the next one :)
That organsm scene & the dialogue about how men & women can never be friends are what this movie is famous for! They reference that men & women dialogue in Strong Woman Do Bong Soon when Min-hyuk takes his one step closer to Bong Soon 💜
LOVED this reaction so, so, so, so much! My favourite movie ever!!!!!- and you guys are right, it’s still modern! Men and women both LOVE this movie and again I thank you all for reviewing it! I cried! Am going to start it over, then watch the movie AGAIN!
I've seen this movie several times and the diner scene still makes me laugh until I'm crying 😂 I heard somewhere, (can't confirm) that some of the background actors had no idea that would be happening and their reactions were real.
19:29 😂 your reaction to that scene pretty much sums up your personality : 😀🫣😳 lol Also stop torturing Zuff with these rom coms…the guy is reminded he’s single every time!! 😂
I randomly say, "Baby Fish Mouth" and "You're right. You're right. I know you're right" to this day. Btw, sometimes, on New Year's Eve, I'll usually start watching the movie around 10:30 pm (can't remember the exact time), that way when Harry declares his love to Sally, the movie's NYE countdown lines up with the actual NYE countdown.
You guys are going to start the “Before …” trilogy or just Before Sunrise? I love that you guys are getting into the classic romcoms. When Harry Met Sally is my favorite!
You know it is a great movie that crosses time when you don’t notice the lack of cell phones and technology. This movie is all about people and relationships. So glad you guys got to see it because it is one of my all time favorites. FYI- THE PECAN PIE PART- Was Billy Crystal doing his best comedy improv . Rob Reiner the director just signaled Meg Ryan to just go with it, that’s why she looks so confused. THE FAKE ORGASIM PART - the old woman that said I’ll have what she is having is The Director Rob Reimers mother .
Yes, as someone mentioned the behind the scenes story of how this movie was written is really interesting because it mainly came out of conversation between the director Rob Reiner and screenwriter Nora Ephron. They had wanted to collab on a movie and really focused on writing from a male and female perspective, trying to include things that men and women didn't know or understand about each other, at least, at the time, i.e. men believing men and women can't be friends and that women fake orgasms.
Guys, His Girl Friday from 1942 is perhaps the earliest well-known romantic comedy. There were others before then (and lots since) that weren't labeled as such.
This is a classic for sure. From Harry spitting on the car window to Sally's fake orgasm in the restaurant to the final confession of love on New Year's Eve, it's all perfect. If you liked Billy Crystal, try one of his comedies, "City Slickers" it's a great feel-good comedy.
Rom-coms proliferated in the 30s and 40s!! Due to Hayes Code limitations, screenwriters had to use their skills to get very creative with language and topics!
"How do these guys know each other?" They just told you in the first 2 minutes of the movie: " Sally, this is Harry Burns. - Harry, this is Sally Albright. - Nice to meet you. - You wanna drive the first shift? - You're there already. You start!". His girlfiend at the time knew Sally, and since Sally was going to New York, she hooked him up to share the ride with her.
There were plenty of rom-coms before this! Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers released a bunch of rom-coms in the 1930’s. Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn were in one in the 20’s.
FYI, the scene in the museum when Harry says “we are gonna talk like this…” That was some improv from Billy crystal. Meg Ryan was confused and at one point you see her turn her head- she was looking at the director rob reiner- he signaled to her to “just go with it.”

The older couples in the interviews were hired actors, but the stories were real. The screenwriter took them from interviews with real people.
Rob's secondhand embarrassment from that one scene made me laugh hysterically.
"Ill have what she's having."
The woman who said that line is Rob Reiner's mom in a cameo.

LOVED this reaction so, so, so, so much! My favourite movie ever!!!!!- and you guys are right, it’s still modern! Men and women both LOVE this movie and again I thank you all for reviewing it! I cried! Am going to start it over, then watch the movie AGAIN!
I think Harry was finished with college, and Sally was going to go to graduate school in New York.
I've seen this movie several times and the diner scene still makes me laugh until I'm crying 😂
I heard somewhere, (can't confirm) that some of the background actors had no idea that would be happening and their reactions were real.
19:29 😂 your reaction to that scene pretty much sums up your personality : 😀🫣😳 lol
Also stop torturing Zuff with these rom coms…the guy is reminded he’s single every time!!
I just knew Rob's second hand embarrassment would be triggered in THE scene 😂😂😂
Aaaahhh!!! I FRICKIN LOVE this movie. I quote it all the time and whenever someone catches the quote its great. I laugh so hard every time.
So refreshing to watch you guys enjoying this story and rooting for them to get together. 🥰One of my all time favorites...😃
I have always heard about this film but never got round to watching it excited to watch along with you guys as my first watch
i was dying at the guys just letting zuff converse with himself for a good minute at like 3:13 omg
You guys should do more rom coms, some of my favorites are Grosse Pointe Blank, Mr. Right, Knight and day, What's your number?, and Must love dogs.
Yes to Grosse Pointe Blank!
This is the first time I ever heard of someone ordering exactly what she wanted. The “on the side” was a huge thing back then.
They didn't know each other; Amanda introduced them in front of us when Sally came to pick him up. She never met him before that.
I watched this movie once and I still remember the diner scene.
I’d laughed my butt off at 31:52 😂, we all had made that face, as well😅🤷🏽♀️🧍🏽♀️
Guys, His Girl Friday from 1942 is perhaps the earliest well-known romantic comedy.
One of the best rom coms ever!!!
Watching you watch this has made me realize that I need to see you react to the Cutting Edge. I NEEEEDDD ITTTTTTTT 😫
So happy you boys reacted to this movie. One of my favorites comfort movies!! Love your 25 days of movies this month. Keep up the great work
genuinely one of the best romcoms everrrrr and u guys never disappoint 🥰
There were plenty of rom-coms before this! Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers released a bunch of rom-coms in the 1930’s. Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn were in one in the 20’s.
FYI, the scene in the museum when Harry says “we are gonna talk like this…” That was some improv from Billy crystal. Meg Ryan was confused and at one point you see her turn her head- she was looking at the director rob reiner- he signaled to her to “just go with it.”
I watched this movie for the first time earlier this year and I loved it so much. One of my faves
