Dionne Warwick is Whitney Houston's cousin. Whitney's mother, Cissy Houston, was a gospel singer and backup singer for Elvis, Chaka Khan, and Aretha Franklin.
Cissy Houston (Dionne's aunt) was also a member of the Gospelaires. Besides doing their own records, the group did a lot of background for Dionne and for other singers.
I actually think We are the world was released in March 85 and That's what friends are for by Dionne and friends in November the same year. If I am correct, We are the world came before.
This is one of the most beautiful collabs. Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder, Elton John , & Gladys Knight. All great friends. BEAUTIFUL expression of love & friendship. 😊❤
This was written by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager. It was first recorded in 1982 by Rod Stewart for the soundtrack of the film Night Shift. This recording, 1985; billed as Dionne Warwick & Friends, was released as a charity single for AIDS research and prevention. It raised more than $3 million.

During the 60s, 70s, 80s there was amazing camaraderie and genuine admiration among solo artists - and bands as well - for each other. They knew and appreciated each other's talent and uniqueness. And while each artist continued to seek/maintain his/her own fame, they willingly collaborated with other artists from many different genres for worthy causes. QUITE IMPRESSIVE. This beautiful song, written by Burt Bacharach and Carole Sager, and brilliantly performed by this group of artists was released to benefit AIDS prevention/research. I think we need and could benefit with more of this type of collaboration in today's divisive world. MUSIC - more than any other art form - is a unifier.
