This video was very well put together! Thank you!
Great episode Dylan! I learned things :)
Thanks. I was looking for someone to explain this. Awesome job!
thanks doc, appreciate that!
Your videos are awesome, Dylan!
Already a patreon but just wanted to thank you for all this research- you are quite good
Thank you. Good info. We just had our Tesla Solar Roof an Powerwalls installed Dec 15, 3rd roof in Oregon, using two Delta M6 inverters. They just finished the 7th roof in Oregon this week (a friend of mine) - still using the Delta inverters. Sadly, our systems, once installed, are not backward compatible with the new Tesla inverters.
Interesting as always, thank you, Dylan 👍😊
glda you enjoyed it ray, my pleasure!
Very enlightening, thanks!
you got it!
Useful information. Thank you.
you're welcome scott!
Great content!
Well done doooo
I’m planning to install in my house 🏠
Tesla solar system
This info is really valuable
Keep the good work doooo
glad to hear that julio!!
Thank you!
Having Tesla Solar installed March 1. Just inquired about getting this as we started our process in August.
congrats dude that's super exciting!
Give us an update
@@rictoectol9814 it’s installed! 75 panels, 3 Tesla inverters and 3 power walls. Still waiting for our electric company to complete the final inspection so that we can turn it on.
We ordered our system late February because of the Texas shutdown from snow. They just finished installation today. 12.24 system 3 power walls. Only a month and a half wait isn’t bad. We got two Tesla inverters. Kinda of sad I won’t get individual stats on the panels, but it is what it is....
Panels have bypass diodes. If a panel is shaded current bypasses the shaded panel and the unshaded portion of the array will still operate at 100%.
Agreed - the statement about 1 panel impacting the performance of the other panels in a string is false. Was true maybe 20 years ago, but all current panels have multiple bypass diodes to prevent this. The bypass diodes (typically 3 per panel) allow the panel to be fully shaded (or 1/3, 2/3 shaded) and not impact the performance of the string. The only time a string inverter is less efficient is when there is complex shading - across multiple panels and where the diodes can't fully conduct.
Wow Dylan, the quality of your graphical presentations keeps improving, and in meaningful ways too. Well done!
thank you!
Thanks Loomis!!!
This video is really underrated
Where / what is the solar stadiumthat is in the background at the 5 minute mark? I would like to reach that setup for school. Thank you.
Could you make a playlist of Tesla Solar/Energy related videos?
I ordered Tesla Solar Panels 5 days ago without powerwall, Will they include Tesla or SolarEdge inverter?
Hmmm... Monitoring each panel (shingle) seems like it could make for an interesting heatmap-style display
for sure!
thanks!
my pleasure!
how do you re-energize/restart after rapidshutdown?
Tesla owns the entire solar system 🤩 YES!!!
team vertical integration!
Micro inverters are much better technology and 25 years warranty rocks. Go Enphase!
String aka: in series; when I started researching Tesla shingles for my home they weren’t using there shingles in series... a positive for me having tress around my house. Then they stopped the shingles production after I had provided my deposit. Guess I’ll continue to wait on which product I will decide on. 🤷🏼♂️ Cheers
cheers brotha!
Tesla's inverter also functions as a power optimizer between different roof planes and different portions of the array.
@Electrified - Review, comments on Tesla’s recent PW+ that includes integrated inverter/gateway?
Good stuff! Have to dig in a little deeper when I get a few mins... scrambling for work stuff. They actually expect me to produce occasionally... dang it... lol
how dare they?!?! lolol
I have enphase IQ7+ 25 year warranty on panels and microinverters, no inverter box to ever go bad. I am glad I did not get the Tesla ones as my area was not on their approved list yet anyway. Inverters need to be replaced every 7-10 years, sure some may last longer, but my setup is one small pipe down from the panels into my main box and nothing else. This is good overall if you are getting Tesla panels though...
hey march! i've heard nothing but great things about enphase
why can enphase build an inverter that lasts 25 years but tesla cannot? with solaredge inverters you have a 12 y warranty or you can pay them a dollar to upgrade it to 25. I think the inverter life is sandbagged for accounting reasons.
@@eric23walsh I think it’s due to the much higher voltage of string inverter vs separate micro inverters with low voltage. High voltage = Wears out faster
@@TurreTuntematon that could be right, but a string inverter is usually designed to make 350Vdc in 350Vpp - 240Vacrms. they were designed to do the lightest lifting possible - which makes them the most efficient and cheapest to build. Having a big boost converter in their shouldn't help with the reliability! They don't have AC transformers in them... do they?
The microinverter warranty is 25 years, the failure rate is not. Totally different things. Labor also not included. Easy to change a string inverter, can be hard to change the micro-inverters when they fail. Think of a central inverter as like a hot water tank - something that you'll get 10 years average from, but could be less or more based on factors. 1 micro-inverter per panel on a harsh roof environment greatly increases the likelihood of a failure. But, you can choose to ignore and only loose the output from the panels with the failed microinverters, wheras a central inverter failure brings down the whole system output until replacement.
Solar is very interesting
agreed!
I recently have the new Tesla inverter installed along side solar panels and powerwalls, unfortunately you can’t view each panel details. I have a 10.22KW system (yes Tesla can customize your system outside the standard sizes online) but I got a 7.6KW inverter installed. I’m still in communication with Tesla to see if they would add the smaller 3.8KW inverter to maximize my system. ( Tesla Inverter comes in 2 sizes, 3.8KW and 7.6KW).
Why do you need an inverter if you already have Powerwalls? Powerwalls already have a built in inverter. Am I missing something?
@@heruofori-atta8089 Tesla Powerwall is an AC battery (AC in / AC out), so in order to function together with a solar array the Powerwall system requires a separate solar inverter. Look it up
Why I have 42 V in my Tesla inverter?
When plug out the wire from DC I have more 300 V
Tesla's inverter also functions as a power optimizer between different roof planes and different portions of the array.
The UK power grid limits solar production on domestic homes to 4kw or 12kw with a 3-phase power supply. When will tesla upgrade their inverters & powerwalls to 3-phase ?
great question mark...i will keep an ear out
What is the rationale ?
@@musaran2 The UK power grid was only designed to meet the power needs of when it was created in 1935. To prevent overload, the UK power grid has a16Amp * 240v = 3840kW limit for home Solar PV connection, anything larger requires an expensive upgrade ie: digging trenches & laying new 3-phase cables
@@markbrowning9363 16 amps is the rating of an ordinary power strip !
3840 kW = about 4 vacuum cleaners.
This is beyond ridiculous.
@@musaran2 The UK Power grid needs investment/upgrading but the government are unwilling to invest in our power infrastructure, instead, we get a sticky plaster solution by limiting the supply & generation
How about if your old Tesla inverter need to be replaced, does Tesla replace your broken inverter with the new one?
if it is still under warranty they should!
Yes we do.
The thing that confuses me is why an inverter is needed when connecting to a power wall, since those are DC devices. Wouldn't the power wall just need to convert the AC output into DC? Doesn't this incur energy loss?
Might be an easy way to deal with a voltage mismatch, but there might be more efficient ways to go about that.
The Powerwall 2 is an AC battery (AC in / AC out), so in order to function together with a solar array the Powerwall 2 requires a separate solar inverter. One advantage of this is the solar inverter can be 'almost' any model since it operates independently of the Powerwall.
AC battery systems can be easily retrofitted to homes with an existing solar installation, but they are slightly less efficient compared to the common DC battery systems. This is due to losses in the conversion from DC to AC power, first the DC solar energy is converted to AC by the solar inverter, then back to DC to be stored in the battery, and finally back to AC when it is needed by the appliances (with typically 3-5% losses in each conversion). This adds up to approximately 89% round trip efficiency compared to around 95% efficiency with a common DC coupled battery.

And if you plug it into your tesla roadster you invert it again. We're confusing the electricity.
hahaha
and then the motor controller inverts it again for the motors
Another interesting little fun fact. Most appliances are actually run by dc motors, ie refrigerators, a.c. unit's, dehumidifiers, washer&dryers etc.
What a waste we have by converting energy back&forth from ac-dc since those use the most energy in our home's. 🤔
Wrong, unless you live in an RV or such.
You are doing good job producing Tesla content on youtube.
But, specifically in this episode, you maid a few mistakes regarding efficiencies etv
which in particular?
has anyone used the "Dylan! you son of a b#&ch" meme to say "pretty good video, bro"?
I. .want. Battery. Powered. Cooktop. For. .safty. .of. Electric. Current. And. Can. Be. Charged. By. Air. Gasses.
Tesla don't make their panels - they are sourcing Hanwha Q-Cells panels, at least they are on the day I am writing. They are a mid-level panel with an efficiency in the 19% range and the exact model is a 340 watt "all black" panel. I have seen articles about them making panels themselves but they aren't there yet. You can get these panels for about $210, so the panel cost is $2,320 per 4kW, really not that much of what they are charging ( $32k for an install with $9,200 of panels ).
Looks like Tesla is making a fairly standard string inverter. If the inverter quality is on the level of sma and Fronius then it should be pretty good. I’d just like to add that solaredge systems are a bitch to install and I fucking hate them (personal opinion). They’re massively overrated, if I had shading concerns I’d go emphase micro inverters over solaredge any day of the week.
Cant wait for solar to trump the autos! When do you think Biden will announce the 7500$ EV rebate deal so I can buy my model 3????
i'm so with you dude! hopefully in the next few weeks!
Sleek but very expensive
how many came here just by looking at the display pic?..
In just less than a year, this inverter is overheating and will turn off at least 6 times a day to cool off. It's intermittent. There was also a week that it stopped working and I have to toggle the big lever switch to restart it back. Inverter smells like burnt.
The worst part is, I have been waiting for Tesla to fix this problem for months now. Tier 1 support acknowledged the issue and she escalated it to Tier 2 support. Been months now and Tier 2 support hasn't contacted me not once. The Tier 1 support has also stopped responding. There's no way to contact Tesla Solar support. This company is POS.
I chose Tesla over some small Mom and Pops Solar because I thought they are big and support would have been better and easier. I was wrong.
Enphase is the best hands down . Tesla buy Chinese made panels not made in America and inverter just a standard series power not parallel. The inverter I’m sure they just putting the logo on it . Tesla battery is Panasonic with all their patents Tesla just puts logo on it . Enphase has great patents and if one panel goes out the other panels still operate on its own independently. Tesla battery is the best on the market . Sunpower & LG is the best panels in the industry 25yr warranty, production 25 guarantee , and labor 25yrs. Only people that use mono-crystalline panels with a 90% efficiency in 25yrs not 75-80%.
The Tesla inverter is not a rebranded product. Try and find an inverter with 4 MPPT channels.
Horrible customer service !! Don't buy or get TESLA!
