  • In today’s feature we’ll look at a player that at the end of the day is a top 75 of all time, a top 10 points leader, 10 time all star, scoring champion yada yada and the list goes on for what you’d expect a former NBA superstar to accomplish. Yet why does it feel like with Carmelo, he doesn’t get the respect his peers like Lebron James and Dayne Wade gets, and hasn’t had the all time great sendoff some believe he deserves to have. Many even think he should still be in the NBA right now, but no team would sign him because the consensus is it’ll be subtraction by addition. Like somehow the team would be better off not having to deal with the on court baggage Melo has historically brought to a team. Like for instance his playoff plus minus, which measures a player’s impact on the game, representing the difference in their team’s scoring vs the opponent’s while the player is on the floor, was negative in all but 4 out of the 19 he’s played in the league, a vast difference than his regular season play, where only 6 of those 19 seasons were negative, all toward the beginning of his career where he dealt with injuries and figuring out the NBA in his younger years. Carmelo was the talk of the town when he came back home to the Knicks, with expectations for him to lead them to the promise land, at least the conference finals one time. He spent 6 full seasons with the team from 2011-12 - 2016-17, and missed the playoffs 4 times as the captain of the ship, losing 4-1 in the first round and then 4-2 in the semifinals his first two seasons in New York. From SUPERSTAR To Journeyman Carmelo Anthony Stunted Growth!

I always saw Melo to Lebron what Dominique Wilkins was to Jordan. What separates Jordan and Kobe (to a lesser degree) from Melo is they understood utilizing teammates and playing defense. Team USA Melo was the best version of him because he did all the little things he refused to do as a leader on his teams in his prime. Portland and Laker Melo was cool because he seemed to finally get team first concept and veteran leadership. He should've been Memphis's vet.

The kind of story about dudes who couldn't make it at the next level and where out of the league in a few years are the type of story I watch this channel for. Technically he could do a stunted growth story on Lebron James if he's now stretching the definition of type of story considered stunted growth... I always though Melo could have averaged a triple double years before Russ did. He had the rebounding and scoring, all he had to do was pass a little more, especially when double teamed. But Melo has always been about Melo. Instead of going to the Knicks in free agency, he forced his hand to be traded in a deal that saw the Knicks give up some good young talent that could have helped him win. I also think not being drafted by Detroit stunted his growth. If he had been drafted by that team full of veterans with on court and off court experience they could share with him as guidance, he may have realized that team success is what wins championships.

IMO, I believe his marriage to LaLa was a key factor in the problems as well. She always wanted to be in an area with the glitz & glam (LA, NYC, Chi Town, NOLA, etc) and not comfortable in a low-key city for the long haul (Salt Lake City, Portland, OKC, etc) and Melo wanted to keep her happy for all it was worth. That team hopping, just like job hopping, makes other teams think twice about investing time & money into a player bouncing around

Agree with a lot. 1 of his problems was being compared to LeBron, KD, too.
My pops put me on game during the trio's primes last decade that since Bron brings up the ball and sets up plays he's really a PG or point forward, and therefore not comparable to the other 2.
I personally felt the Knicks had almost everything they needed to compete in Melo's time, which I know you disagree with.
I'm reminded of the 70s Knicks who had a lot of talent but not every big name and only really needed to mesh and to play for each other, as they said, to win. That last part is what the Melo-era Knicks lacked.
They had too many knuckleheads on that team, and again, as my dad said, "they quit on Mike Woodson".
I cannot lie, though: I loved watching the Knicks, back then.
