That I believe is the drain for the lake, my grandma remembered as a kid the lake was occasionally drained, via a plug, the locals would gather eels from the lake bed while it was empty. The, or a tunnel, was a short distance over the bridge into the wood, I think you can still see some of the stonework, kids on our street went some way up it when I was a kid but filled in by the 90s I think, a skeleton was found initially thought to be a monk but then thought to be a homeless person i think
@@timawells well if you go round the abbey again, going clockwise, keep your eye out on the left of the path after crossing the river, there's still a bit of a depression and the top of a stone arch, that was another tunnel and I know it goes in some distance, tbh I think most of these 'tunnels' were about water control, there was a very similar one at the old ruddle mill at nearby braithwell, there were 7 water mills between the abbey and maltby and the monks kept carp ponds on that side of the river, the clandestine escape tunnel theories are much more interesting though
Thanks for the video Tim. That is a beautiful place to visit. Been a few times. Can get some really nice photos and videos there. May I ask what camera you use please?.
Let’s go TIM! Are there anymore haunted or secret tunnels around with a story behind them
Firbeck Hall is supposed to have a tunnel. I need to go back here in wellies and with a torch.
Is it free to park and go round Tim 🤔

Enjoyable one there Tim
I need to have a look inside one day.
that's a overflow for the lake the tunnel was done when he did the landscaping
It may have been repurposed. But find me a sluice key to open it?
I heard that there's a few tunnels linking the church at Firbeck to Roach Abbey.

I was told it was an original tunnel there before the lake. Went into a cave system.

They didn't have internet in the days of Henry the VIII
As mate you need to go back in there with a torch?👍🇬🇧
It could be very muddy in there and I am not great in enclosed spaces.
