I have watched many of your videos and I must say as a 25 year veteran golf professional, you are an outstanding coach. I’d take lessons from you all day long. This is a very good lesson
This is essentially the holy grail in golf. To be able to remove the timing of the flip of the wrists is to reduce your margin of error by like 60-70%. It's not as easy as it may seem (getting the club face in the right position takes a great deal of practice), but it's well worth your time to learn.
Best explanation of external/internal shoulder rotation I’ve ever seen. I’ve tried flipping my forearms/hands over through impact to square the face but it’s so hard to time it right consistently. Some shots I would hit clean and straight, but others would be a short fade bc my face would be open at impact. I tried this passive option today at range with a stronger grip and immediately felt a huge difference. I made solid contact on almost all my balls across all my irons. There is less to think about with this shot. I feel like the majority of the work is at setup. Make sure you have the right grip and are aligned properly. After that it’s just turn and fire hips through with arms feeling like dead weight that’s being propelled forward by my hips. The external shoulder explanation is a game changer. It makes my swing feel more compact, with less to think about and provides consistent ball flight and contact. My only problem with it is that I now I have to recalibrate all my irons because I was hitting them considerably farther than I was previously...good problem to have though.
Brilliant explanation for me it is the missing link wish I had been told this 50 years ago, I'm a young 91 and trotting off to the range to enjoy a session
Hi Thomas you are an inspiration, I am a young 49 year old only taking the game up seriously three years ago and I hope I still have your enthusiasm and hunger to learn at 90, and that I can look forward to another 40 years myself of playing this great game. 👍
Good grief, I don’t know how many videos I’ve watched, magazine “tips” I’ve read and I’m pretty sure I’ve never heard or read about the external rotation of the right hand. Thank you for making such clear sense. Going through a MASSIVE swing change because of your advice and even after one session at the driving range I’ve already increased my distance by at least 10m per club just by getting a little more compression. I’m sure there will be some pretty bad scores coming up over the next few weeks as I go through these changes, but I reckon they’ll be followed by some great numbers once I get it dialled in. Thanks heaps Eric. I will be telling all my golf friends to get on board the Cogorno train.
I think this is one of these most important videos ever about the golf swing. You see so many modern pros swinging this way and yet almost zero amateurs. The thing I would add that helped me is to NOT focus on the left wrist at all to achieve the toe down club face at last parallel but to switch my entire focus to the externally rotated right shoulder combined with concentrating ONLY on my dominant right hand wrist position. For right handed people (most of us) we have far more awareness / control over our right dominant hand and yet I find so much of the golf setup / focus / grip / flat left wrist at the top of the swing focuses our attention on our left side - and that leads in my opinion to the world of slicers that has been created. Being a former tournament level tennis player and someone who can skip a rock, the world of golf changed for me when I started practice swinging with my right arm only and relearning these wrist / elbow positions for the right arm - is was a massive help. For me now I don't even think about my left arm / hand / wrist at all - like zero. All I do now is practice my toe down takeaway at parallel holding the club in my right hand only, the top of the backswing position that I want my right wrist in, the back down to parallel with externally rotated right shoulder & toe down position, again only holding the club with my right hand - those 3 positions only - repeat repeat repeat. If you get those 3 positions grooved holding the club only with your right hand your ball striking improvement will be astounding. Great video
B E A U T I F U L explanation of external shoulder rotation Eric. This was something I found by accident not that long ago, and it has helped my swing exponentially. Thank you.
Great video. My wrists can get too active. Rotating club face with forearms only results in straight shots. Almost no need to do anything with wrists on downswing as long as the forearms handle rotation. I can’t believe how straight my drives are now. I might be losing a few mph based on my swing radar but who cares when the ball is in the fairway. Also swing radius feels longer now.
I cannot thank you enough for all your content, and this video in particular. Working super hard on my impact position and not having any progress and this one video instantly allowed me to find some swing keys that got me into a much much better impact.
Eric, this is a terrific explanation of the relationship between the components of the passive release. I struggle with my release. I tend to hold on during the downswing, and leave my club face wide open. I look forward to working on these concepts. Thanks
Stuff like this, is what separates Eric from the rest of youtube instructors imho..I have never seen any of them go in to details like Eric does. Also, details like this, at least for me is a Great help for me understanding why my swing works well, or not. I'm of the opinion that this channel is the Only one I need to help me play better golf. Thanks Eric, wish you were around 15 years ago..lol
after watching 10 years of you tube golf video's I've never hear internal external rotation of the right arm. I've hear hands, forearms, and such but this move keeps the elbow in automatically and the screwdriver move with the wrist happens almost automatically. This instruction for someone has always thrown their right elbow out to close the club face is a game changer. This move needs to be talked about more often so everyone can hear it... Bring it up in all your videos just for a second in necessary, but this is so important and doesn't get explained very often at all. They all say to pull your elbow in but not how to. Thank you.
Very helpful. I had spent all this time trying to jam my rear elbow into my right hip pocket without thinking about how the arm rotates. I’m hopeful that will help reduce my tendency to pull or hook.
Mind blown. This *is* the missing piece for me too. I’ve always played a strong grip but couple that with a non-passive release you get hooks and shanks from over rotation of the club face. The key at the end about external forearm rotation is the gold here imo!
I averaged a 76 last season, watched Eric's Videos all winter and I just played my first round of the season and shot 72! Hit 15 of 18 greens at a difficult course.(35 putts) Thank you Eric!
man.....this is some secret in the dirt stuff. elkington should collaborate with eric cuz eric knows how to explain it in detail thats easy to understand
Great video! I actually solved this very thing on accident. One day at the range I thought -"what if I just come down with a full karate chop feel?! (Right palm facing the camera as long as possible). BOOM!!! I felt like it would fly 80 yards to the right! IT WAS A 7 YARD FADE WITH DRIVER AND SUPER LONG! Big power fade...insane speed and line. A draw is easy too if you just add a little internal rotation later in the downswing. I love your explanation of the feels and technical aspects.
Thanks, Jacob! Sounds like you are on the right track... This is one you may also like feel wise: ua-cam.com/video/XiGbh1SyBXY/v-deo.html Or keeping lead shoulder more internal feeling like left elbow stays pointing toward target for longer during follow through instead of to the left
Helpful. Applies to me as tend to over rotate in coming through resulting in pulls and hooks and perhaps under rotating on way back which then exaggerates this. Am addressing but what I found really helpful from somewhere else that you might want to incorporate if it makes sense is the following: thinking of holding q plate of food flat but at an angle at the top, and on way down doing at impact a low five (as opposed to high five) slap. A little but a king to your external rotation concept.
The feel is do overdo right shoulder external rotation and forearm supination in the downswing? There is a bit of forearm pronation just before impact to square the club head.
Another game changer for me you do a great on your videos with your explanations picking up lot from you that works for me just need to put in the practice time to get better
Hey Eric; what clicked for me is the palm facing forward which squares it as long as you turn properly. This seems like Spieth's swing. Great video; thanks!
I prefer the passive release, as the other leads to violent hooks. However, I seem to be coming to impact with the face open ( my "feel" is that my right hand is under at impact). Will try gripping the club with my right hand as the club is on the ground with a little forward lean. Would this work for the driver or other teed up shots? Keep all these great videos coming.
Thanks, Richard! I can't speak to whether that would work or not in a general sense. Would need to see you do it. If your face is too open I would start here: ua-cam.com/video/2nOKt2uclRw/v-deo.html
really good for me about early rotation of rear shoulder from external to internal. That is what I do. Still struggle with the delay and making it passive but at least I know what I need to work on. I can do it on half swings but on full swings sill have trouble for some reason. Anyway - great explanation.
This is excellent instruction. I've been a student of the game for 45 years. The swing has evolved as there's been an advancement in equipment , the golf ball and swing analyzation. I presently play with a passive release relying on rotation. The aggressive release rears its ugly head on occasion or on a bad day. Hitting simple compression shots at the range with my irons ingrains good form. Do you apply the technique shown in this video for for all clubs?
This. That's what I'm talking about! After 30+ years of trying to swing it like Phil and Freddy, I've learned to rotate it like Hogan and just about everyone else with a "modern swing." Golf is not a swing. It's a turn. The results have transformed my game.
Love your style of golf teaching. Easy to grasp and you back your theories up with physics. Question though! I can totally rip the ball this way getting good compression. However im getting swingpath gets way to the left, resulting in pull draws. If i try to hold off the face more i just hit straight pulls or pull cuts. What am i missing? Right side bend? All the best from Sweden! /J
Hey man! I would really have to see your swing to say for sure...could be several things. Check out Cogornogolf.com so I can see your swing and help if you don't get it.
Regarding release and two confusing drills. Drill #1 is from backswing position imagine skipping a stone target wise. Drill#2 would have us throwing the stone/ ball to the ground in front of us. Is drill number one for passive release and drill number two for more active/ throw release ?
Thats one way to look at it More resources here: ua-cam.com/video/FCC4uLg92XA/v-deo.html&pp=ygUcRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHBhc3NpdmUgcmVsZWFzZQ%3D%3D ua-cam.com/video/kvMijVAf9FI/v-deo.html&pp=ygUcRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHBhc3NpdmUgcmVsZWFzZQ%3D%3D
for those (me) that have had shoulder surgery and motorcycle crashes...we have limited rotation....we have to manipulate our hand thru impact (turn hands over) to avoid a pull shot.
This is such a huge help for me thanks! Parts about how the externally rotated right elbow and the palm facing out through impact can still give u a square face at impact. Would like to ask how the energy is released (how the hands work to direct that energy) post-impact for the very passive method to get that sense of speed? Or does it become a drive instead of a "swing"? Im trying to fix "ending" my swing at impact where im too focused on that position, i have imprved contact sometimes, but no flow, no speed, no rhythm.
These should help with the after impact feels if you want to be more passive ua-cam.com/video/XiGbh1SyBXY/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/BlZriUpP7Ns/v-deo.html
This release is different from your other videos on the release (The Best Way to Release the Golf Club) which you have recommended for most golfers. Perhaps you could explain why you would choose one release pattern vs the other and what conditions must exist (flexibility, ability to rotate, etc) to choose one over the other.
Hey Daniel! Yes it is! The reason the other style is "best" is because its the most realistic BECAUSE most people have clubfaces that are too open This style release ONLY works if the face is in a strong position 10% (or less) of people have a clubface to do this....it would be IDEAL....but if people dont get the face more square earlier this ball will go right.....hence the other style would be more PLAYABLE not OPTIMAL perhaps It all comes down to the clubface
Great explanation! Is it the same for the driver? I would think that you aren’t supposed to have that much shaft lean, but the principle is the same with squaring up the clubface. Thanks for the information again!
Would love a video about the 2 feet before impact, impact and 2 feet after impact, regarding body position (working together). What should impact look like...?
@@CogornoGolf I'm kind of a visual learner. Fred Couples, Jim Fruryk and others have 'flaws, but line everything up right before, during and after impact. The whole; body position, shaft angle, swing path, that last second stuff that makes consistent ball striking.
GREAT VIDEO Eric. Gave me MANY answers on how to rotate that I haven't seen anywhere. Any theories on why the trail hand is so inclined to internally rotate through impact in the full swing? I'm tempted to have my full swing be a half, drill like swing because I can't get my trail hand to remain external .
When I'm pitching I turn my trail hand down coming thru impact.( feels like Knowles coming up or Palm coming down. What I observed..1. Ball comes up higher. 2. Ball checks up faster, instead of Ball lands then releases forward......
Assuming you are speaking of he LEAD hand/arm....yes that would be correct.... IT adds more loft, bounce and spin loft. Good stuff for those shots! almost like you are OPENING the face through impact
What’s really strange to me about this is the more I hold my rear hand in external rotation the better my draw is. The “feeling” I have is I’m going to blast it straight OB but it doesn’t happen. Great video again.
@@CogornoGolf , I struggled mightily with the passive release. I had some initial success. But when I started to go for it, the sh@nks started to show up. I could not get around quick enough.
Hello Éric. Love your videos and particulary this one because my last big issue in my swing concerns the last part of your video (currently 1.5 hcp). Will you have and exercice to work external rotation of right arm ? I know I have to it and know how to do it but in real speed it’s like I don’t have the patience to hold it and I start internal rotation to quiclky before impact. Thanks a lot. Regards. Ricardo
Tour Striker smart ball is one option for feedback...elbows staying closer together helps external rotation.. Need more and more exaggeration as you add speed
I definitely over draw or even hook it on my big misses. I would love to play a consistent fade in a heartbeat verses a draw! Why are most golfer's so draw happy? Mr. Nicklaus played a fade and that sounds great to me.
Fade is fine as well! Most every good player I have taught has hit a draw/hook at some point and then learned to take curve off as you get more advanced. Nothing wrong with playing fades
Eric great video I suffer from lazy hands and not flexible wrists guess I have always been a flipper. Will this work with stiff wrists. I’m afraid I’ll hit the dreaded shank.
Lovely video, but of I accelerate much and hit long distances it is almost impossible to prevent to strong release 😩 must I begin to swing much softer???
Hey Morgan! To have a "passive" release pattern like this you really need the earlier pieces in place (club face closed enough, path from inside, body in correct positions, etc)......regardless of speed
Why, if you could indulge me, would this push my path out a touch on occasion and end up hitting a couple shanks. I hit 3/4 on the trot great but then, what feels out of nowhere, the hosel gets involved. Can really rock the confidence. If I turn to aggressively I tend to thin it and contact suffers. Do i just need to grind it out or is there something that you think could be the cause. Bearing in mind I'm concentrating on face down, right elbow and good posture. Have to say, another fantastic drill. I've been playing great recently and your vids have been conducive in the results.
One of the main reasons that would happen is that the right arm is too long...when you get face more down (forward flexion, external....if right arm is too long like it used to be when internal and face farther from ground then club outside ball line) Of course I would have to see your swing to say for sure and I can say in 2 seconds
Hey Marvin! If you watch the rest of those videos you will see the connection to golf with the analogy we were making where the power source is. More or less explaining the important of a full backswing turn and good depth! All the best!
Thanks Eric, great explanation from setup to waist high.....can you describe what you are doing with the clubface from waist high up to shoulder position?....still trying to keep the clubface pointing down so no rotation occurs? thx.
Sooooo....how much external rotation at address? Should the flat part of the top of my arm just above the wrist be sort of perpendicular to the ground? That question may be a bit too confusing or cryptic, perhaps just an explanation of the right arm/shoulder at setup.
1. neutral at address (depends on grip) 2. Not sure what you mean here How your right arm is depends on your grip. The stronger the grip the more the right arm will be "under". More bent and more supinated. Not much internal/external rotation of shoulder at address...more about supination/pronation of lower arm
I draw/ Overdraw irons, hybrid and 3 wood with no thought however, if I don't think about my hands or anything when hitting driver I get a high slice. Is there anything obvious that you can think of as to why I draw my irons and everything else except driver?
So with a passive release and externally rotated right arm I can keep my right elbow from getting stuck behind my shirt seam as I come into impact? Is that what you are saying?
Depends on what you mean by loose.... Stronger grip--more square face--more rotation--less hands Weaker grip or more open face-----less rotation----more hands
@@CogornoGolf I'm meaning loose as the free hinge at release. No restriction. My wrists seems to offer too much resistance as I swing through to release. Passive release seems to release later where free hinge is not as important...?
Been struggling to get right elbow in front of right hip at last parallel with both ‘elbow drive’ and ‘external rotation’ feels. Any drills you’d suggest to improve this?
Make sure your body isn't too far forward (lateral) and make sure you are open (rotated enough) also depends on where you were at top... Is your trail shoulder externally rotated at top of internally rotated? Where is the depth at the top? How much left side bend do you have? Etc, etc...lots of factors involved...
Eric, I’m working on a passive release. With a passive release will I lose distance on my clubs compared to the aggressive left hand aggressive roll like a couples or Phil? love the videos you are helping my game improve keep up the great work.
Hey Keith! Thanks for the kind words! We really cannot say there is a 1-1 correlation between PASSIVE or ACTIVE release and distance. Too many other variables in the swing. I would have to see what other elements you have in your swing to see if it would positively or negatively effect your distance. Here are some ofter pieces to compliment a passive release...if you dont get it sorted check out www.cogornogolf.com so I can see your swing and help more ua-cam.com/video/8Cg2O8atmYY/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/2nOKt2uclRw/v-deo.html
I feel like this guy covers all the missing information that most other instructors will never tell you. This movement together with his chest movement in other videos, is like the missing information that I never got from watching most other teachers.
Surely if you externally rotate you right arm when you come to halfway down you clubface would be more open and not matching your body angle, or am I wrong??
Hey! as mentioned below face would still be square if..... 1. Grip strong enough 2. Wrist conditions good (left left flat/bowed and right wrist extended)....depending on grip REMEMBER...only players who can externally rotate like this have strong clubfaces!
This lesson seems to work in conjunction with this one: ua-cam.com/video/XiGbh1SyBXY/v-deo.html. I took the latter to the range and found that if I focus on keeping my trail arm lower than my lead arm through impact I hook less. I have been fighting a hook for years and your lessons are helping me keep the club from closing through impact and hitting hard, low hooks. I haven't mastered it yet but I feel like I am on my way. Thank you, Eric!
This is by far the best explanation I've heard on the trail arm for passive release. Eric is the man.

Thanks, Fred!
Obi Wan, for me and my swing, this is the best video you’ve ever done, keep up the good work!
:)
Eric - Thanks for the tips, I think that external release will help my pull hook.
Thanks Steve!
Hey Mark-Love that! More square/closed face def pairs better with more rotation and "passive" face.
All clubs-yes.
This. That's what I'm talking about! After 30+ years of trying to swing it like Phil and Freddy, I've learned to rotate it like Hogan and just about everyone else with a "modern swing." Golf is not a swing. It's a turn. The results have transformed my game.
Beautiful!
Excellent tutorial.
Appreciate it!
Great explanation... can't wait to try it out tomorrow
Thanks, Joel!

Hey man!
I would really have to see your swing to say for sure...could be several things. Check out Cogornogolf.com so I can see your swing and help if you don't get it.
I would guess you are getting above(pulls)/below(pushes) the plane in your backswing. It creates angles coming down that you have to offset.
Great video and eye opener about external rotation of right arm. Are you able to show how this happens in slow motion from the top of the backswing?
Thanks!
Perhaps in future videos! For now...search "slow motion face on Dustin Johnson"
Easy to see there!
Regarding release and two confusing drills. Drill #1 is from backswing position imagine skipping a stone target wise. Drill#2 would have us throwing the stone/ ball to the ground in front of us. Is drill number one for passive release and drill number two for more active/ throw release ?
Thats one way to look at it

This is what I have been doing more of as of late. My accuracy has improved greatly, I have to say. I like how you used the slap shot demo as well
for those (me) that have had shoulder surgery and motorcycle crashes...we have limited rotation....we have to manipulate our hand thru impact (turn hands over) to avoid a pull shot.
Yes you do
This is such a huge help for me thanks!
These should help with the after impact feels if you want to be more passive

@@CogornoGolf cheers!
This release is different from your other videos on the release (The Best Way to Release the Golf Club) which you have recommended for most golfers. Perhaps you could explain why you would choose one release pattern vs the other and what conditions must exist (flexibility, ability to rotate, etc) to choose one over the other.
Hey Daniel!
Yes it is!
The reason the other style is "best" is because its the most realistic BECAUSE most people have clubfaces that are too open
This style release ONLY works if the face is in a strong position
10% (or less) of people have a clubface to do this....it would be IDEAL....but if people dont get the face more square earlier this ball will go right.....hence the other style would be more PLAYABLE not OPTIMAL perhaps
It all comes down to the clubface
Great explanation! Is it the same for the driver? I would think that you aren’t supposed to have that much shaft lean, but the principle is the same with squaring up the clubface. Thanks for the information again!
Yes, exactly....less lean unless you have a ton of speed
Same face squaring principles
Thank you for the response! Appreciate the comment and content!
Would love a video about the 2 feet before impact, impact and 2 feet after impact, regarding body position (working together). What should impact look like...?
Hey John!
What specifically would you like to know?
@@CogornoGolf I'm kind of a visual learner. Fred Couples, Jim Fruryk and others have 'flaws, but line everything up right before, during and after impact. The whole; body position, shaft angle, swing path, that last second stuff that makes consistent ball striking.
@@CogornoGolf Found the; How To Use The Right Shoulder To Create The Perfect Impact Position. That helped a lot!!
Hey Bill-thanks!
Right hand typically doing that to try to square the face (usually too open earlier)
Great video Eric! The external rotation was the missing link for me
Appreciate it! Glad to hear that!
Good stuff Eric
When I'm pitching I turn my trail hand down coming thru impact.( feels like Knowles coming up or Palm coming down. What I observed..1. Ball comes up higher. 2. Ball checks up faster, instead of Ball lands then releases forward......
Assuming you are speaking of he LEAD hand/arm....yes that would be correct....
IT adds more loft, bounce and spin loft. Good stuff for those shots!
almost like you are OPENING the face through impact
At what point do you start “throwing” the club to achieve passive release if you struggle with a pull hook?
LATER!
ua-cam.com/video/Nwz6Yrr9SrI/v-deo.html
So do you have a video on setting your arms in the slot on the downswing..
Sure! Search my name and "arms"
yes yes yes.. perfect example in my opinion...zac johnson
:)
What’s really strange to me about this is the more I hold my rear hand in external rotation the better my draw is. The “feeling” I have is I’m going to blast it straight OB but it doesn’t happen. Great video again.
Haha love it! Make sure you give yourself feedback to you can see what you're ACTUALLY doing
Alright, I'll try this today at the range. I'll give some feedback later on this evening.
Cool-have fun!
@@CogornoGolf , I struggled mightily with the passive release. I had some initial success. But when I started to go for it, the sh@nks started to show up. I could not get around quick enough.
Did you record swing to see if you were actually doing it?
Or were you just swinging with no feedback and guessing?
Great lesson
Thanks, Bob!
@cogornogolf would you apply these same principles to the driver or no?
Yes! All clubs👍
Love it! Thanks!
Our pleasure!
Excelente explicación y generas más potencia, ya lo exprimente
I definitely over draw or even hook it on my big misses. I would love to play a consistent fade in a heartbeat verses a draw! Why are most golfer's so draw happy? Mr. Nicklaus played a fade and that sounds great to me.
@Roenie launch monitors have proven draws don't necessarily equate to more distance!
Fade is fine as well! Most every good player I have taught has hit a draw/hook at some point and then learned to take curve off as you get more advanced.
Nothing wrong with playing fades
Excellent
Appreciate it!
Eric great video I suffer from lazy hands and not flexible wrists guess I have always been a flipper. Will this work with stiff wrists. I’m afraid I’ll hit the dreaded shank.
If you can't get wrist angles you need to get grip stronger to make up for it
Love your explanations. Does this require a massive 1piece turn of torso or is there normal turn with separation of upper and lower segments
The more and more "passive" you want the release the more and more you need a lot of pelvis and ribcage rotation
Thanks will try
There are a lot of definitions out there: thrusting, throwing, swinging. Please name your move! :-)
Really good stuff here!!!!
Thanks, Doug!
@@CogornoGolf ok I Will try again this season 😩 But my hook can be awfull When My speed forces me to release to early 🤠
One of the main reasons that would happen is that the right arm is too long...when you get face more down (forward flexion, external....if right arm is too long like it used to be when internal and face farther from ground then club outside ball line)
Of course I would have to see your swing to say for sure and I can say in 2 seconds
Heard you mentioned a Trebuchet on one of your videos. What’s the connection to golf. Thanks
Hey Marvin!
If you watch the rest of those videos you will see the connection to golf with the analogy we were making where the power source is.
More or less explaining the important of a full backswing turn and good depth!
All the best!
Hi Eric, I watched your videos you did with Mike Malaska....is this video similar to the Malaska "magic move? thanks.
Hey Tim!
Not sure if its similar or not....just a nice description on an active vs passive release!
Thanks Eric, great explanation from setup to waist high.....can you describe what you are doing with the clubface from waist high up to shoulder position?....still trying to keep the clubface pointing down so no rotation occurs? thx.
Good stuff makes sense
Thank you!
Sooooo....how much external rotation at address? Should the flat part of the top of my arm just above the wrist be sort of perpendicular to the ground? That question may be a bit too confusing or cryptic, perhaps just an explanation of the right arm/shoulder at setup.
1. neutral at address (depends on grip)
2. Not sure what you mean here
How your right arm is depends on your grip.
The stronger the grip the more the right arm will be "under". More bent and more supinated. Not much internal/external rotation of shoulder at address...more about supination/pronation of lower arm
Neutral at address makes the 2nd question moot. Thanks.
I draw/ Overdraw irons, hybrid and 3 wood with no thought however, if I don't think about my hands or anything when hitting driver I get a high slice. Is there anything obvious that you can think of as to why I draw my irons and everything else except driver?
Would have to see it..don't want to make a random guess
I really enjoyed the video.
Dude!
Right!
So with a passive release and externally rotated right arm I can keep my right elbow from getting stuck behind my shirt seam as I come into impact? Is that what you are saying?
Yes....
Have to match other pieces to that to make it work
I think aggressive release is better with a loose wrist at the bottom. Passive release doesn't seem to need that for release..?
Depends on what you mean by loose....
Stronger grip--more square face--more rotation--less hands
Weaker grip or more open face-----less rotation----more hands
@@CogornoGolf I'm meaning loose as the free hinge at release. No restriction. My wrists seems to offer too much resistance as I swing through to release. Passive release seems to release later where free hinge is not as important...?
The trick is having the right thumb externally rotated without tension in the right arm through impact. .
Those feels work!
Been struggling to get right elbow in front of right hip at last parallel with both ‘elbow drive’ and ‘external rotation’ feels. Any drills you’d suggest to improve this?
Ps club face is 30-45 degrees tilted down at last parallel
Make sure your body isn't too far forward (lateral) and make sure you are open (rotated enough)
also depends on where you were at top...
Is your trail shoulder externally rotated at top of internally rotated?
Where is the depth at the top?
How much left side bend do you have?
Etc, etc...lots of factors involved...
Thanks Eric. Guessed it might be a chain reaction type thing rather than on its own, as always!
I’ll send my swing in to you with this in mind.
Here are some ofter pieces to compliment a passive release...if you dont get it sorted check out www.cogornogolf.com so I can see your swing and help more

It seems that with an externally rotated right arm the club face is likely to stay open.
You have to match it with a strong grip OR good wrist conditions (right wrist extension)
@@CogornoGolf Glad Olivier mentioned this. I was a bit confused on that also. Thank you
I feel like this guy covers all the missing information that most other instructors will never tell you. This movement together with his chest movement in other videos, is like the missing information that I never got from watching most other teachers.
Appreciate you being with us!
Very useful lesson. Thank you. Would the same principles apply to using a driver?
Yes....
release with driver really is depends on speed....angle of attack.....and face angle
Surely if you externally rotate you right arm when you come to halfway down you clubface would be more open and not matching your body angle, or am I wrong??
mark tizard not if your grip is strong enough. Externally rotating trail shoulder with a weak grip will get you in lots of trouble.
Tristan Warner cheers Tristan
Hey! as mentioned below face would still be square if.....
1. Grip strong enough
2. Wrist conditions good (left left flat/bowed and right wrist extended)....depending on grip
REMEMBER...only players who can externally rotate like this have strong clubfaces!
thumb up x1000!!!
Thanks!
👍
Thanks!
Absolutely! Love it!!
My brain just imploded watching this
Hopefully you cleaned it up and put it back together!!!!
I think you have just caused a worldwide epidemic of divots, fat shots and big pulls. However, I enjoyed the video lol
Haha thanks!
I have listened to this several times and can't catch what you're saying about the right collarbone please describe carefully again thanks
Hey Troy,
Grip....
V's of each hand point to right collar bone
That's how you know your grip is "strong enough". Left of collar bone too weak
