  • Today I’m showing you how to make smelly jelly [gelatin] air fresheners. They slowly evaporate, releasing & dispersing scent into the air. Make them with water beads or gelatin (showing both).
GELATIN RECIPE: Bring 100 milliliters distilled water to a boil (use any heating method). Stir in 1 packet [1 tablespoon] gelatin (or ½ tablespoon agar) & stir until dissolved. Stir in 60 milliliters alcohol (or Vodka) & 100 milliliters [room temperature] water. Cool mixture below 120 degrees and add 3 milliliters preservative (I used Germall plus). * Potassium sorbate is highly recommended; it's specifically designed to preserve food. Mix well, then pour mixture into 4, 4-ounce jars. Add fragrance oil & color to each- you choose how much (I added 1 teaspoon [5 milliliters] fragrance oil to each). NOTE: This is a mild air freshener so use a strong scent.
WATER BEADS: 50 milliliters distilled water, 15 milliliters alcohol, 1 milliliter preservative (Germall plus). Add 5 milliliters fragrance oil + 1 milliliter polysorbate 80 to a cup. Mix them together. Stir in water mixture. Pour liquid over 2 tablespoons of water beads.
DISCOVERY: I conducted 30+ experiments & found out a LOT: * Isopropyl alcohol & Vodka produces the same physical results. * I experimented with polysorbate 80 (1 milliliter/ 5 milliliters fragrance oil) & it solved the separation issue (& turned jellies opaque), however, I couldn’t unequivocally determine if the polysorbate 80 interfered with the jellies ability to disperse scent. (I don’t think so, but more testing is required) * Set jellies on the counter or in refrigerator (both produce same results). * You may add salt (+ 1/2 tablespoon table salt after gelatin & dissolve). I added salt before and they came out great. NOTE: Salt can also act as a preservative, but salt weakens gelatin’s stability, gelling ability, & lowers gelatin’s melting point. So, it may lead to your jellies melting. * I wouldn’t think a preservative to be necessary with distilled water, alcohol, & if especially if adding salt. But I added it to be safe! * I only conducted a few experiments with water beads. I feel like they can probably hold more fragrance oil (especially since using polysorbate 80). * I believe the maximum amount of fragrance the jellies can hold is 5 milliliters [1 teaspoon] per 4 ounce jar.... But this is up to you!

I followed the recipe for the water beads, only leaving out the preservative. Oddly enough, the beads are not growing at all, even after a day in the mixture. I tested the water beads I have with just plain water, and within minutes there was a size increase. Very strange.

If you use Ethanol instead of rubbing alcohol and add the fragrance oil to to it before adding it to the gelatin mix, the oil doesn't separate.

Hi just wondering if you have any idea how you’d go about making DIY gel crystals (with essential oils) that are natural and fully dissolve as they evaporate? I’m keen to make some anti-mould ones to put around the house. Thank you

    • @CreativeBathLab

It's the strongest in the beginning. Like other home scenting goods, the scent diminishes with time. All together I suppose a few months
