Gloria Jones' mid-1960s version of this song was massive in the UK Northern Soul scene through the 70s and even 80s. Few knew that the singer was the same Gloria Jones that was driving the Mini that hit a tree in Barnes, London, killing boyfriend and Glam Rock idol, Marc Bolan, two weeks before his 30th birthday. The 80's had such a diverse range of music - kids could hitch their wagon to whichever scene they felt connected to, as for me I liked it all, I was greedy! LOL Eurythmics, D Mode, etc were pop culture extraordinaire - rock bands Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Huey Lewis and the News, Poison, Dire Straits - and of course metal bands, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Guns and Roses and many many more different genres and scenes, I loved The Cure for awhile too when I was a teen! The 70's, 80's and 90's were fab for music!
The 80s were all about the dance clubs, man, so yeah, lots of upbeat tunes heavy on the drums, perfectly suited for sweating it out on the dance floor!
@@tracyconnor6166 multi-hit wonder!! Haha... They did some 'innovative' marketing by issuing multiple versions/remix.. sold by the truckloads, and help keep the song on the charts
@Raymond C Then they have the power of love that seems to be churned out as a Christmas song every year even though it’s not a Christmas song. One of my most hated songs to hear at that time of year.
Other great Soft Cell songs: "Frustration" "Martin" "Heat" "Monoculture" Check out the band that did backup singing on their first album: Vicious Pink. "Take Me Now" is an absolute classic.
This was a great song in early 80s when it was alternative, no radio played it, you could only hear in the dance clubs. Now I hear it everywhere I go, even the corner grocery store. You are right about 80s sound- synthesizers and electronic sound we’re trademarks of this era. With a keyboardist, a computer, and a singer you had a band. Check out Howard Jones!
What's up Jay? From an old school D.J., I see that you're just now noticing the difference in each decade of your musical journey! Starting with the 50's very slowy classical Doo Wop Era...with songs like: It's Just A Matter Of Time by Brooke Benton, to the 60's more upbeat foot stomping hands clapping Era...with songs like: Baby, Where Did Our Love Go by Diana Ross & the Supremes, to the 70's flashy Disco Era with songs like: On The Radio by Donna Summer, to the wild computerized 80's with songs like: Billie Jean by Michael Jackson, up to the no holding back last but certainly not least...the hardcore party 90's! With songs like: I Love It When You Call Me Big Poppa by Biggie Smalls & more! Hopefully this was a good breakdown! Peace!
The original version was sung by a woman. They reversed the gender of the song. Works fine. There is a longer version of this track. It transitions into a different song, "Where Did Our Love Go?".
Yes, I’m saying this everywhere.. that it HAS to be the longer version or you miss way too much- it kills my soul cuz I’ve always loved the ENTIRE song sooo much!!
Must also do their song called 'Say Hello, Wave Goodbye'. I was at Sort Cell's final gig and they finished with this song. Anthemic to their fans - Just as much as Tainted Love. - There is also a better version of Tainted Love where they mix it with 'Where Did Our Live Go'. The blend gives me chills. Seriously I have Loved Tainted love since their version first came out, though now that I know the combo version, I prefer it. The instrumentals are all Save Ball's doing.
Gloria Jones sang the original version. It was a big Northern Soul hit. Highly recommend giving it a listen. Northern Soul is a fantastic genre to explore.
I saw Marc Almond perform at a small club in San Francisco years ago. During one song, he invited people in the crowd to come on stage and kiss him (men & women). He went to town with one guy
This is a synth-pop cover of the Northern Soul song originally recorded by Gloria Jones. Although not a Motown song, this may be a good one from Motown Mondays.

@@texaslyoness8537 making a list, I got my headphones on and Hello Again is On! Thank you. lets do this Jay!!! The Cars!!!
@@naturespirit164 My Car agrees.
ALL MIXED UP THE CARS!!
How bout "Relax" by Frankie goes to Hollywood? Very 80s!
@@Military450Veteran Yes, "Relax" is a one-hit Wonder, not Motown.
Two tribes by them was 9 weeks at number 1 in the uk charts the same year and they had 3 number ones in a row with relax two tribes and power of love
@@tracyconnor6166 OK I defer to you. Though I never Heard of "Two Tribes" in the U.S., I do recall "Pleasure Dome". Still, Jayvee would like it on some day other than 1-Hit-Wonder.
@Dina Lydia I should have remembered the video..it’s an anti war song and had lookalikes of Ronald Reagan and the then Russian leader fighting in a ring and the planet exploding at the end..a bit too much for mtv
My brother had the album and played it when I visited him. I didn't think much of it and preferred the Human League's Dare. Roll on a decade when I started buying CDs and realised that the songs I liked by Soft Cell was on 'that' album. I listen to the disc on my separates system and the content and production is incredible. One of my favourite albums, and I have almost a thousand Cds.
Never heard of Soft Cell, but definitely recognized their song. 🐝
✨ The song Whip it comes to mind as I listen, wonder why? ✨
I was thinking sex dwarf, But im NOT a fan, lol
For me it's Depeche Mode's "Master and Servant".
Can you please listen to our house by madness
I danced like crazy in clubs on this tune in my 18-20 years... This was a huge hit.
Who didn't dance your feet off to this one, the longer version one would make you need another drink as it was long. (But so good)
The 80s were all about the dance clubs, man, so yeah, lots of upbeat tunes heavy on the drums, perfectly suited for sweating it out on the dance floor!
similar one hit wonders Eddy Grant - "Electric Avenue" (1982), Frankie Goes to Hollywood - "Relax" (1983), Taco - "Puttin' On the Ritz" (1983)
FGTH... Two Tribes (Annihilation mix)..!!
Think I’ve replied to everyone who has said relax lol..two tribes was 9 weeks at number one in the uk then power of love was number one
I love soft cell! I have all their music. Every song is amazing! Numbers and sex dwarf are my favorite!
This song was huge in the clubs back then. The remix tainted love / where did our love go was played every night at the clubs
My younger brother had this song as his support song while recovering from an std.......yep.....the 1980s were wild.....😊
years around the sun - Miles Away and the summer we raised you! excellent songs
Peace!
Four Non Blondes „what‘s going on“. Their only Hit. You couldn‘t escape this song in the early 90‘s.
Going to the bar at 18 and was a favourite song. Memories! 😃
krista marsh I just looked it up, the song title is „What‘s up?“, although the main line is, what‘s going on.
Quite possibly the worst record ever made
Love the song What's Up? Brings back memories of school!
I can still sing every word.
I'm 16 and I first heard this song in September 2020 and now it will forever give me nostalgia from 2020 instead of 1981 XD
Loved the video, keep it up man! I would recommend listening to the song 'Blue Monday' by New Order :)
JACKIE WILSON Higher And Higher with Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth dancing to it, awesome
The original version was sung by a woman. They reversed the gender of the song. Works fine.
There is a longer version of this track. It transitions into a different song, "Where Did Our Love Go?".
Gloria Jones 1964
Yes, I’m saying this everywhere.. that it HAS to be the longer version or you miss way too much- it kills my soul cuz I’ve always loved the ENTIRE song sooo much!!
The 80's music matched our mood in the 80's. We were young, carefree and just wanted to live having fun! I'm happy I was there 😁
This song was also featured in the comedy with Dan Ackroyd called The Coneheads
Must also do their song called 'Say Hello, Wave Goodbye'. I was at Sort Cell's final gig and they finished with this song. Anthemic to their fans - Just as much as Tainted Love. - There is also a better version of Tainted Love where they mix it with 'Where Did Our Live Go'. The blend gives me chills. Seriously I have Loved Tainted love since their version first came out, though now that I know the combo version, I prefer it. The instrumentals are all Save Ball's doing.
"Once I ran to you, now I run from you."
I think we all have a few of those people in our lives.
Classic song. Thanks for sharing Jayen! (sp?)
Oh wow, and just like that, it's 1982. No wonder I feel lighter and my hair is restored.
You should see the Official video. It adds a new dimension to the lyrics. It's disturbing, but one of the most memorable videos ever shown on MTV.
The Original Was A Northern Soul Classic And Was Wrote And Sung By Gloria Jones Who Was Marc Bolan Of T.Rex Girlfriend
Dave went on and had an outfit in the 90s called The Grid. They had a dance club hit called Swamp Thing.
Marc Almond has a solo career as well.
Gloria Jones sang the original version. It was a big Northern Soul hit. Highly recommend giving it a listen. Northern Soul is a fantastic genre to explore.
Another Soft Cell track to check out is “Chips On My Shoulder.” High energy track. Can’t imagine you wouldn’t enjoy it.
I saw Marc Almond perform at a small club in San Francisco years ago. During one song, he invited people in the crowd to come on stage and kiss him (men & women). He went to town with one guy
Gloria Jones originally did it in the 60's, that s a nice version too
You can't help but sing along and move to the beat. Takes me back to being a teenager.
This is a synth-pop cover of the Northern Soul song originally recorded by Gloria Jones. Although not a Motown song, this may be a good one from Motown Mondays.
This brings back memories........I was a true New Romantic........The dance..... The clothes...... The make-up..... Thanks Jovaughn..... Enjoying WHWW. ❤️
