The grestest thing about this clip is that for the briefest of moments, for that wonderful evening, REM was once again complete. No three legged dog here. Thank you Bill Berry.
Grew up on this album! Such an awesome college album. Saw them in Williamsburg in '87 for Document and '89 for Green. AMAZING shows but I'd say the first was better as it had more material from Pageant❤
i know lots of comments have been made about bill, but that is what REALLY stands out. i never realized how great of a drummer he was til watching this.
Man it sounds perfect just as soon as he plays the drums. And Michael seems more relaxed like he doesn't have to carry the band like a 'star' because the whole band together is the star
Bill Berry made R.E.M. magical. An all time band whose sound totally changed beyond recognition once their drummer left. Beatles, The Who, Nirvana, Green Day - all took off once they found their drummer - R.E.M. and The Clash were never the same once their drummer left.
Simply a great song from one of the best bands we're lucky enough to have had influence us, Berry always played with infectious energy and when you put him together with Mike you had a phenomenal rhytym section that seemed as hard to stop as a train, Michael sounds fine, a little lower in some spots maybe then how he sang it nearly 30 years ago, but it's also live and having seen them as a kid back in the day - it hasn't changed much, always a heavy and rawish song live (and one that rocks!). Thanks for posting!
I saw these dudes in Sydney, 1995. Thanks Larry for getting me there. It was the best concert I've ever been to, and I've been to some good ones. They showcased Monster, a heavy album - you haven't lived till you've heard WHAT'S THE FREQUENCY KENNETH screamed out loud and live with that raw guitar... words cannot describe it.
Jack Kitchen, come on buddy . Chronic Town Murmur Fables of The Reconstruction Life's Rich Pageant Document Green Out of Time Automatic For The People Monster Pretty solid records ✌
Just the 4 of them, the way it should be. Back to basics back to the real R.E.M. They don't need the other guitarist or keyboardist. The other guys are good but they just don't need them.
Rem without bill berry was not rem. This reminded me of how great they were in irs days. Mystique that got lost when they left athens and became mega huge. Yeah, they got big, but something got lost. Only nightswimming really gave me the feeling of the 80's stuff.
great to see all four back together. Bill has moved on and the new drummer is his equal. Their lst record accelerate is their greatest work ever 7 month on and i a cant change cd in my car. Thanks a bundle for accelerate guys.
Peter Buck's amp was playing up all night. You can see someone come on in the background to take a look. Peter got so pissed off in the end that he hurled the amp offstage.
Totally agree about Bill, but I feel this showcases them all superbly- Peter’s riff and style with Mike unselfishly locking everything together…sheer perfection. REM are my favourite band ever, but you can tell by now that Michael was nowhere near one of the best singers in the world at this point. Still a unique voice yet not quite the one that (in my opinion) peaked in the early nineties.
Bill is awesome...Not that the new drummer is bad,on the contrary...anyhow, stipe is kinda mediocre here..other than that awesome vid and one of historical value as well
Totally agree about the Beatles. The only way anyone could compare this band to the Beatles is if they never heard the Beatles or they are tone deaf. Nothing they do is by any way comparable to the Beatles.
The Beatles were very important for their time and what they represented. But musically they were somewhere between average and dull. If they were around now they wouldn't even get a record contract. REM, on the other hand, are the greatest band there has ever been.
Stipe seems a little stiff here (contrast this with his moves on the "Perfect Square" performance of "Begin the Begin"). Nonetheless, the song is a perfect start to any REM performance.
The grestest thing about this clip is that for the briefest of moments, for that wonderful evening, REM was once again complete. No three legged dog here. Thank you Bill Berry.
Berry sounds amazing here
Wow, Mr. Berry is back, and suddenly it sounds like it is 1986 again.
Wow, how is that even possible?
Michael, Mike and Peter must have loved having Bill back for this night. What a great band. One of the best ever.
Lifes Rich Pageant, Best Album.

Damn! I forgot what a monster (pardon any pun) Bill is behind the kit!
This, this right here, this is REM!
Man it sounds perfect just as soon as he plays the drums. And Michael seems more relaxed like he doesn't have to carry the band like a 'star' because the whole band together is the star

Berry, Buck, Mills & Stipe forever!
Welcome back once again, Bill. Now IS FOR REAL R.E.M. :)
this is my favorite r.e.m. song
Those drums!!!
Bill Berry's LIVE drum sound is primo!
Bill Frickin' Berry! A great drummer makes a huge difference. Anyone in REM would tell you, I'm sure.

in fact, this one performance shows why Bill Berry was probably the most important band member, musically.
They had some of their best albums after he left and Peter buck defined their sound
@@jackkitchen154 Name one album after Bill left that is better than anything before.
What???
Jack Kitchen, come on buddy .
Chronic Town
Murmur
Fables of The Reconstruction
Life's Rich Pageant
Document
Green
Out of Time
Automatic For The People
Monster
Pretty solid records
✌
@@jamespage7998 That's as far as I got before I lost interest in this band.
Bill kicking ass! So heartwarming.
These are, without question, the kings.
Bill playing makes me smile.
my favorite band
Look at Bill! Listen to him!
You hear that drum sound? I do.
Just the 4 of them, the way it should be. Back to basics back to the real R.E.M. They don't need the other guitarist or keyboardist. The other guys are good but they just don't need them.
@Issicra Yeah, the drum playing it's awesome!!
@Issicra Yeah...an incredibly underrated drummer, that's the sound I hear the most
Berry makes this into a ritual. Awesome!!
It's like Bill Berry was never gone for 10 years! Wonder how much they rehearsed for the gig...
Not bad for a band critics labeled back in 1980 as nothing more than a guitar based college rock band. Cheers to you, lads!
This shows how much R.E.M. needs Bill.
When this broadcast was aired, did anyone notice REM was last, meaning they saved THE BEST for last!
Bill you are the man...!
Rem without bill berry was not rem. This reminded me of how great they were in irs days. Mystique that got lost when they left athens and became mega huge. Yeah, they got big, but something got lost. Only nightswimming really gave me the feeling of the 80's stuff.
one of my favorite songs!!
waaah! great what Bill does on the drums there! good job!
@Doques : totally agree ! Rieflin is a good drummer but Bill Berry's touch adds something to the songs !
Bill are fantastic, great best ever
Berry hasn't lost a step, and this is, what, 10 years after he left?
Amazing. How is that even possible? Maybe he rehearsed for a year.
Bill Berry !!!!!
Bill Berry number one!
Wonder how many people realise Bill went into the studio the next day with them to record #9 Dream. The last ever recording as the original R.E.M
Technically not though as it wasn’t berry buck mills stipe songwriting..
an authentic performanse, from an authentic band_
yep I noticed that when I watched it live!
too bad, BUT they are playing this song and it sounds great on their Accelerate tour! ie. Berkeley
great to see all four back together. Bill has moved on and the new drummer is his equal. Their lst record accelerate is their greatest work ever 7 month on and i a cant change cd in my car. Thanks a bundle for accelerate guys.
billy rocks
Bill Berry needs to pull a Ron Blair.
Well drunk Peter Buck is still better at guitar than I am so

Peter got so pissed off in the end that he hurled the amp offstage.
❤❤❤
Ditto!!!!
Well said...
They probably used this as a war up song, it gets really good towards the end.
(stop smoking mike :])

A fast food restaurant also in athens is named Automatic for the People. Even dough they are skinny they seem to love food... :P
Michael starts off a little shaky at first, but then he adjusts. Overall, it was good!!
Myles Standish proud
What year is this???...........Bill is bringin it the the Hall!
Peter Buck’s amp was fucked, and he ended up throwing his Vox AC30 off the stage and into the crowd.
Bill is awesome...Not that the new drummer is bad,on the contrary...anyhow, stipe is kinda mediocre here..other than that awesome vid and one of historical value as well
this is great, so sad that this group fell off so much and hasn't done anything good in years...
I think Bill just came in for the induction ceremony last year.
Why are you watching the video then? :-D Flamer...
@painxtreme Apologize? They should THANK him for it! :D
BILL!!!! Ah, the old vibe. This fucking rules.
shit still sounds awsome to me

Unsure of the value of Bill Berry?? Example...the finest example...
Broadcasting over TV does bad things to distorted guitar sounds, as well.
We Need Bill
Stipe's voice seems to have lost some of its strength. He always sounds strained now. Too bad. The rest of the band sounds pretty good.
Stipe seems a little stiff here (contrast this with his moves on the "Perfect Square" performance of "Begin the Begin"). Nonetheless, the song is a perfect start to any REM performance.
Stipe sounds and looks like a James Bond Baddie here.Wonderful as usual ..but odd.
thats fckin right!
after 1997 r.e.m was other band with the same name...
I think so too.
No Bill, no REM. Sorry, someone had to say it.
As a drummer, I would say it's not a great performance by Berry. But you can see how much Peter, Mike and Michael love having him back.
Not a great performance?? Seemed pretty spot on to me!
The drums really are great. Nice to hear Bill that way. Stipe, on the other hand... not so much. :(
Well... Who makes the final decision what's good music and what's not?
The ear of the beholder
the guitar sounds muted, but berry's drumming is great ;)
The mix is off here, I can barely here the guitar... Drums are fantastic though.
The drums are great. Nice to hear Bill that way. Stipe, on the other hand... not so much. :(
Bill's the only one not drunk here and listen to guitar 3:19
Wow, his voice... its not as good as it was on some of my albums. I hope he is ok. He sounds under the weather.
Never got rem, always sound so depressing.
That is why we like 'em.
Such a highly over rated crappy band, REM.
