    Eddie Vedder is a class act. Growing up with the release of Pearl Jam's Ten album, seeing the videos on MTV, who knew that he would be so special? Parents making jokes about the new Grunge or not thinking it would ever be important music, just noise. Well, I'd say that Mr. Vedder has proven to all of us that Grunge music and that time period of music was some of the most prominent music to ever be released.

    • @user-tz2zz5ij1s

      The evolution of Pearl Jam is crazy. They went from always being labeled as the 2nd or 3rd best “grunge” band have been one of the greatest touring bands for the last 15 years. A Pearl Jam concert has become comparable to a Grateful Dead show, it’s church for their massive followings.
      Eddie has shined and accepted his place in rock history. By far one of the best front men off all time. They guy just drips natural charisma.

In love like one who loves a father, a role model, a teacher, a philosopher or poet. He taught me about the nature of my soul and he gave me the soundtrack to feel. His voice and spirit is not of this world. For two decades now his voice and his poetry is what imprisons my mind as I write, cry, think and live. We as mere humans are fortunate to have such amazing artists as Eddie Vender and many others to guide us through this tireless journey of life.... They share their souls with us.

    Eddie's description of REM while he is introducing/inducting them is "spot on!" Having to stand in front of peers, as well as competitors is difficult on the soul, yet humbling. How does one express exactly what the heart feels and head believes without stumbling over the tongue necessary to do so? Eddie did wonderfully. Reading almost every comment I totally agree that Eddie was rightfully so the best artist to induct REM into the rock n roll hall of fame.. But going back to REM I imagine that if a platform was given to me to say one thing about those four musicians is that A). They introduced me to alternative rock before any other band in the world.. and B). They make me (as a whole band), continue to write music with a passion and with a solid reason.
    REM is THE band I wish I could be in, as like a 5th member playing something as important as the guitar, bass, keyboard or drums (maybe the accordion player or whatever).. Why?.. Because in the 80's, they were indeed ahead of their time.. They were the soundtrack for people that didn't fit in.. That were different, were too passive for the hardcore punk rock scene.. Weren't good looking enough to be in a Winger or a Van Halen band (or even a Van Halen cover band for that matter)... But oddly enough through my very own eyes, I've always thought to myself these dudes somehow have the faces of real musicians that took making artistical music very serious and to the heart... I could type so so so much more, but with my luck.. I'd end up accidentally pushing the discard button.
    If anyone of these guys in the band ever read my comment.. I'd like to say thank you so much, and that the speech Eddie gave up on that stage deserves an honor in itself because it inspired me to be a better writer, a better communicator and listener.. And a much more deeper appreciate of the band and appreciate of my own existence in this life as a fan of music.

      ***** and how did that make you feel, did you like it, dislike it, indifferent?

    • @gregdahlen4375
      @gregdahlen4375 10 років тому

      ***** i'll listen to those but I forgot my headphones. But for the person who speaks it is relaxing to let mistakes stand, like if I accidentally transpose letters i'll let it stand since people can figure it out from context, like if i meant to say i bought gas but instead say i got bass, i'll just go on.
      What is the nature of your fandom, listen to records, go to concerts? I kind of like the idea of Pearl Jam but haven't listened to them much, but I have followed REM, i saw them live here in Southern California, that was when Michael was painting his face with that blue mask, were you aware of that? I dug when they played "South Central Rain," and "Man on the Moon" sounded really good, too.

    • @gregdahlen4375
      @gregdahlen4375 10 років тому

      ***** I liked the mask because it was exotic and different and kind of matched michael's fey vibe? It brought up thoughts and questions in my mind, like even as a kid I wondered if a mask that only concealed your eyes would really conceal your identity. And then I started thinking is Michael really a thief, like when I payed for parking at the concert was he behind that, stealing my money for what, a parking space that is really only empty space? but as i write this i see that the mask could have been the kind of mask you wear at a ball, not a thief's mask?
      who headlined when rem and jam played together, i would think rem is the bigger band?
      so what's your favorite concert ever? My best have been with the L.A. punk band X, and another L.A. punk band (all women) called Screamin' Sirens. Oh, I saw a good show in Palo Alto with Husker Du, Minutemen, and meat puppets. I dug it so much when du played "mary tyler moore" theme.

Then I also loved the previous record 'GREEN' which never made such a big impact in the UK, but had a bid impact talking about green issues and what was happening in the USA regarding the presidents they have had and how they are making such a mess out it. My favourite song on that album is 'Word leader Pretend' and I particularly love the line 'I sit at my table and wage war on myself, Is all for nothing...' which I thought was very deep and profound and summed up what was going on in the world and particularly the countless presidents who keep getting it wrong.

    That summer in the late 90's, my experience with Pearl Jam was not quite so profound: all the way up in the mosh pit, 10 feet from Vedder, and during _Even Flow,_ some dude intentionally dumped his $9 beer on my head for absolutely no reason. No hate- he just looked me confidently in my confused eyes, gave me a nod, and a "FUCKYEAAAAH!"
    In retrospect, perhaps the experience was a turning point for me; at that moment, I came to realize that human nature is as unpredictable as it is stupid. How the hell did he get a beer all the way up there, anyhow? And why would he waste such a valuable commodity on that simple message? And why me?
    I've since cut my hair. And maybe now, that two decade have passed, having squandered them on a pointless and stressful attempt at self-improvement and a furthered understanding, I can come to some small appreciation of that guy's philosophy: seize the moment hard, because it passes in a blink. Fuck yeah.

    I used to often make fun of Peal Jam and Eddie, they get lumped into that sort of cringy 90's alt band stable...but Im old now and looking back he was a pretty cool guy and very conscience of the insanity that was going on around him. He made some questionable choices on television, but you cant really blame the guy, he was just trying to make art and he never really seemed to get a big head about it and I respect that.

      i never did, even then with the flanel & big mainstream alt rock/grunge bands...that never bothered me, its just a style, a period of time...the music is w hat matters, I dont give 2 squats what the guys looked like (besides Flanel and triple-layers of moth-eaten clothen, suited Kurt Cobain quite well) all rock n roll has always had trends & styles.

      I'm much older than most fans. What attracted me to PJ is that they reminded me of 1960s music I grew up with. Real rock. I was 10 when the Beatles appeared on Sullivan (I was pissed off, I wanted to watch Bonanza), and then the British invasion happened. I found R.E.M. partially because Eddie said that he admired them in an interview. It was Monster that caught my attention.

    I am an epileptic and I have always been wary of strobe lights and videogames.
    I suffered a Grand mal seizure in Nov.2018, while I was raking leaves. Every muscle in my body contracted at once. My skull struck my driveway from 5'8" up. The driveway is OK! 😄
    Thankfully, my neighbor saw me lying on my driveway and called paramedics.
    I thanked him for saving my life, because when I arrived at the hospital, I was rushed into the O.R. for my 1st of six (6) brain surgeries.
    During my second surgery, I suffered a stroke on the operating table.
    After four (4) years, I am still recovering in a rehabilitation center. My next move is to a "Supportive Living" facility.
    I am looking forward to the day that I move into my own private home! 😊

    The early records are the best music of r.e.m. , after automatic for the people they died a death for me and that's a crying shame when talking about my favourite band, they sold out when they left irs and lost their edge pleasing Warner Bros. If you are not familiar with their early stuff then I highly recommend you check it out.

    I have loved REM since I was 8 and PJ since I was 13 - how could I not have seen this before?! Eddie - your love for them came through so much - so beautiful to hear, and I reckon you could have carried on for another 10 minutes.... About their activism and handling of fame and their comradeship and equality... All things I see reflected in PJ. Just bliss for a fan to see. Thank you. I wonder if there's REMs acceptance speech somewhere?

    • @eboethrasher
      @eboethrasher 3 роки тому

      Yeah and see, he has to be mistaken because he would have had Reckoning to listen to at the time as well, since it was already out. It looks like they played a show in Chicago in 83 after Murmur was released, per REM Timeline. I would not blame him for mixing up years, lol. I mean, it's 2021 and I still remember that my first time seeing them was 1989, Green Tour, Riverfront Coliseum, I bought a tie-dye T shirt cause they looked cool as fuck and it started ripping before I even left the damn show. Grr. Saw them again in Dayton later in the tour. Never saw them again. Didn't really want to, Monster was the last album I ever really liked all that much, and I was not fiscally soluble to go see them at the time.

    My REM concert brought me proudly to tears. Arm around my girl smiling at my Brothers. Just so moving. Everybody Hurts seriously had us crying and I was so over it…but totally not. Monster tour. At their prime. 4 massive records in a row only to be followed by Hi Fi Way my fave. And UP which is a total Stipe moment Yknow? The apologist. Daysleeper. Ohhhhh I got chills their multiplyin lol. Peace

    WLAV grand rapids mi back in the early 80s had a new music hour on Sunday nights. Fairly progressive for a mainstream classic rock station. Produced locally, it exposed me to Rem, U2, Alarm, Big country, etc. Radio Free EU really sounded like nothing else at the time. Almost traditional yet futuristic.
