My wife walked in and saw me watching this, sat down on the couch and actually got out a pen and paper and TOOK NOTES for a materials list. She then went to the bedroom, got on her YT account, looked up Matts channel and planned my next two weekends. I've only been watching Matt for a couple days. Really glad I found the channel but I'm afraid its gonna turn into a second job. Keep cranking out the videos Matt. Maybe I can use the builds as leverage....🤔

I built two of the large planters and it cost me $240.😢 I used pressure treated 2x8s for the frame, cedar fence pickets where the dirt is and free pine for the bottom shelf. I also added a shelf on the side at the top for a work surface. I built these for Mothers Day and my mom was over joyed with them. Thanks for the plans.

Last year I built a similar item with a twist. Instead of a shelf on the bottom, I built a plastic lined wood water tank. I then got a very inexpensive solar water pump (usually used for bird baths) and ran a tube through the flower bed on top. All day, the water pumps up into the flower bed and then drains back down into the tank. Largest and best blooms I have ever had.

I watched this video then realized: I have enough spare wood that I saved from old projects to make this without spending a dime. I even had some old waste scraps of composite decking to use on the bottom of the box so it won’t rot out the bottom. Thank for this!

These are really nice. My wife watched with me, and you have convinced her to say make these for me. Lol. I appreciate how you don’t edit out things like the broken drill bit. For us long time woodworkers (30+ years and I’m 64) we all have done this very same thing.

Thank you for your guidance and inspiration. Your words, not your videos have pushed me to JUST START BUILDING after a very long time of not knowing where to begin. Its been a year of learning and testing my equipment as I am new to wood working, but comfortabe with any type of new equipment. Safety First, Safety Second, Safety Third.. My first project is making planter boxes out of OLD SHUTTERS. Hope to share the build with others and give back. U.S. Marine retired.

Suggestion: At about 3:1`4 you go through marking the center on all four sides of the rail. I have found an easier way to do this. Use a test piece, mark one and if it is correct, put a stop block at the other end and then all four will come out at that same point (midpoint) just by rotating the rail. You can make all the "points" with just one setting of the stop block.

    Suggestion.
Seal the fence pickets inside and out.
Moisture will get trapped between the liner and the pickets leading to early failure.

Perfect “Mothers Day” project. It’s easy to just use a thick mil garbage bag/plastic liner stapled to the inside. Put a mulch layer down for the bottom 1/2 or so, top up with potting soil - not garden soil. Stick in a few herbs & geraniums, put a nice layer of mulch or sphagnum as the final layer.

As mind-expanding as I'm finding the woodworking world to be, I'm contemplating sort of ahead of time (as I'm not yet established) how to tackle the management of a) many and varied ongoing projects with b) time/money/motivation ebbs and flows, within the context of the demands of regular life, and was wondering if there's inspiration to be found in what a 'day in the life/week' looks like for someone like you! Thanks again! Sarah

I'm a big fan of the cedar and black trim look - very sharp. I have done the same thing with drill bits - in one case (I was so done that day) it became the screw. Good stuff Matthew!

As usual, these are nice and different. Have you ever considered thinking through a design for a chuck box/patrol box for kitchen items while camping? I have been trying to work through designs myself lately, but your designs are always very thoughtful and functional. BTW.... I built one of your obelisks in under an hour the first time I did it. Thanks for that; my wife loves it.

Keep them coming man!I. I really like this idea, The black makes the cedar pop.
I would use cedar for everything,. Probably get some rough sawn 2 by material (which is 1¾ x 3¾) to rip the legs out of.

I forget that not everyone has access to Menards. Maybe double up some strips of 5/4 decking?

Do you not need drain holes in the bottom corners of this planter? I love the contrast of the black and the cedar too. Great design and build.

I’m not surprised that Kreg countersink bit broke on you. It’s junk, in my opinion. The one I have won’t stay together. Very disappointing. Every other Kreg application I have is dope. Really enjoy watching you. And you have motivated me to start working towards starting my own woodworking business.

You didn't explain how you dealt with the bowing and the knot.
What I've found is that if you can cut your short pieces around the knot and exclude it, the bowing will straighten our. The unfortunate part in this is that you have to exclude the knot, which means you may lose more lumber than you intended.
But honestly? It's a small price to pay for what will end up as a straight board on either side of the knot.
I've seen so many people trash whole warped or twisted boards without considering the knots. Gorgeous wood they put in the burn pile. Made my heart hurt. I rescued it and fixed it, so free great wood!
Cut out the knot and let it sit flat for a day or two while laying flat. If you have to soak the wood and weigh it down, do it. The worst that can happen is that it still doesn't end up straight.
Still with a bend or twist? Use what's flat, or the flattest because you'll likely have to plane it anyway. Take out the worst stuff, see what straightens out, and deal with the slightly twisted, bowed, or cupped bits to see if you can flatten them. If you can't for the project you're doing because the measurements are wrong, save it for another project that doesn't require the depth you lost.
If you can't correct, or mill to use in another project, then the board was totally bad to begin with.

Matt this is one of those builds that I just had to buy the plans for right away. Etsy for some reason won't let the plan for the teller planter download.

These are great (as always!). Any issue with the construction grade lumber rotting when exposed outdoors? Or does the paint help? 100% cedar would be lovely but expensive around here…

Great projects what type of paint did you use? How will they hold up outside in the weather? What do you recommend the sale price for these should be?

Hey! I really like your builds and have done quite a few!! On this one however, I have an issue that I’m hoping you can help with. The drainage from the top, if plantings are in it, would drop right down on the lower shelf. Any ideas on how to remedy that?
