    Absolutely true ! I never hit the ball far swinging hard. It wasn't till I slowed the down swing that I hit it a lot further and a lot more consistently. Only took me 45 years to figure that out !

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 місяці тому

      Well still, at least you figured it out!!!
      It's so important to feel the transition in order to suppress the "hit" instinct - which plagues a majority of amateur golfers (the primary audience of this channel) - and get the downswing started in the proper sequence. Slowing things down to discover and ingrain our ideal swing rhythm is an excellent way to accomplish that. This does not mean that we’re going to be slow through the zone. We are simply dialing in our tempo for grooving the correct path and achieving consistent sweet spot contact (i.e.: maximizing our “smash factor”). Think in terms of Els, Couples, Matsuyama, Cam Young, Morikawa, for example.

    This is something I have found helps me a lot! Several years ago, as a beginner, I was struggling with partial swings because I was trying to start my backswing full speed and then suddenly stop the backswing for a shorter swing. This made the transition from backswing to downswing difficult. When I tried to make it feel like slow motion, I started making much better contact with the ball. I try it with my full swing, too. Much better.

    Your 100% right. I strike the ball better every time I feel that stopping point

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  4 місяці тому +1

      YES! The key in this regard is to get to - but not go beyond - our body's natural stopping point in the backswing. This is the point where if we were to try to go any further any or all of the following will occur:
      1) the lead arm will bend and/or lift
      2) the wrists will break down
      3) the lead knee will kick inward towards the trail side
      4) the lead shoulder will level out and lose its orientation towards the ball
      5) weight will shift into the trail side and bring the low point back with it, resulting in inconsistent contact and unpredictable ball flight.
      6) you'll "chicken wing" and/or flip through impact
      7) pain, discomfort, and/or possible injury
      We don't need to force ourselves to get to "parallel" with this swing, and fighting our body in an attempt to do so will result in some combination of the above issues. If we execute this swing properly we will have created width and plenty of distance for that club to travel by taking it in deep, and that enables us to then harness the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum".
      Keep up the great work!! 💪💪

    Great lesson! Many classic instructors spoke on pausing at the top of the swing. Instructors like Sam Snead and Bobby Jones explain that a player should feel the full cocking of the wrist before starting the downswing. Most people begin the downswing before they are set, which robs them of power, accuracy, and consistency. While you said you don't want the feeling of "everything going at one time", waiting for that feeling of one’s stopping point actually sets up the player to do just that (move through in one piece).

      I'm glad you enjoyed it, Joshua, and your comment is spot on. There are two things at play here: 1) Discovering and dialing in our ideal swing tempo, and 2) Feeling that transition - or the change in direction - so we don't rush our downswing from the top and thereby lose our sequencing (a very common affliction within the amateur golfing realm). Our perfect tempo/rhythm - which is unique to each of us individually - thereby enables us to gather and unload the various components in proper order for seemingly effortless, powerful ball striking bliss.

    Dude my coach used to make me do something similar. Pausing at the top helps tremendously with tempo. I used to throw my shoulder/rush my swing and it would cause me to get steep and hit fat shots or I'd pull up and thin it. Pausing at the top prevents this. Also, another good drill is to try and hit 100 yard drivers.

      Here's the thing, though - this body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance swing system is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and it is modeled on empirical observations of the game's most prolific ball strikers. As such it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, and from "weekend golfers" to the best players in the world. For example, watch any Tour event on TV and you'll see a significant number of players executing these motions, a fact corroborated by just how many of them have a very centered swing with the lead knee flexing and the trail leg straightening during the backswing, their lead arms on or very close to their tilted shoulder planes, and their hands deep behind their trail shoulder at the top - all elements of the method being taught here!

    Being relaxed and smooth is the best way to avoid shanks. Everyone thinks they have to muscle the club and they are inconsistent because of it. Even alot of different golf youtubers will do this and it drives me crazy. Power comes from momentum, leverage, and the speed of these two together. If you have good weight transfer and have solid form(for your body) you'll hit bombs.

    I am complete beginner just a year of golf and around 25 hendicap and started to hit relatively consistently last few months. This stopping point, the rhythm, is absolute key. Whenever I hit a bad one its because I didnt feel the stopping point properly. technically there is no complete stopping point, you gotta start the downswing just as you are finishing the back swing to get that recoil that launches you into downswing. It makes perfect sense since you are dealing with a pendulum really the end of it which is the club head and start is your shoulders.

      Welcome to this greatest of games!!
      Actually, there are plenty of excellent players who deploy a slight pause at the top. That "recoil" - or some may call it "torquing" - you speak of is by no means a swing necessity, and it can cause more harm than good, especially if it places repetitive strain on the body.
      By the way, as a beginner, perhaps you might wish to consider the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school? I'm sure it's my gorilla arms that are the start point of my woes. I've tried so many things (a lot of Tom's ideas) but there's always something I'm getting wrong and it's driving me nuts. 😮
    3 months ago I concentrated on Tom's guidance on tucking in right elbow, squeeze arms together, use shoulders in my backswing turn. Massive improvement and was getting another 25 yards on my 7 iron... Job done. Trouble is it made me more tense and I was getting stuck (no follow thru) and it was tweaking my back nd now my ball contact is poor too often.
    From Tom's previous feedback I feel sure I'm just too fast from the top and more like a slashing downswing. I top a lot of balls, but if I try to swing more relaxed I still don't have good contact.
    I also think that one of the hardest things to do for over 50s is the coordination of the hip turn alongside the downswing.
    I know I tend to "slide" my hips which makes me lean back on the downswing, so right now it's a struggle.
    Funny thing is that if I open my stance for an 80 yard pitch I relax and hit nice shots, so I do realise "a lot of it is in the head"....

    I've tried keeping my leading arm straight like in the videos but it does not feel natural to me at all and I can't get good rotation. Maybe my arms are too short?!

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 місяці тому

      The lead arm is the radius of our swing circle, Shannon, and as such if we desire ball striking consistency we should endeavor to preserve our radius from address to post-impact. Our lead arm should hang down relatively straight without any "forcing" at address. From there, as long as we have a proper setup which is supportive of an unrestricted motion we ought to be able to maintain the same level of straightness that we started with. This is not difficult to accomplish as long as we don't try to take it back beyond our body’s natural stopping point. It all begins with a good setup that facilitates an effortless 45 degrees of hip turn. From there all we need is another 45 degrees of shoulder turn to get to the full 90. If any of those turns are restricted by an improper setup, then the lead arm will fight the stymied torso and have a good chance of breaking down.
      As for the trail arm, it will fold to 90 degrees in the backswing and both wrists will hinge as a result, but as long as we keep our connections and arm structure intact these actions should occur naturally as if on autopilot and ought not have to be forced or consciously manufactured.
      And while I certainly have several videos that address this topic, a more structured option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lesson and drill content, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - now enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

      As for "half swings", really the key here is get to - but not go beyond - your body's natural stopping point in the backswing where the tilting, turning, and extending motions are complete, the lead arm has crossed the chest 45 degrees, and the wrists are properly set (preferably with a flat or slightly bowed lead wrist).
      To be clear, we don't need to try to get to "parallel" with this swing, and fighting our body in an attempt to do so will result in some combination of the above issues. If you execute this swing properly you will have created width and plenty of distance for that club to travel by taking it in deep, and that will enable you to harness the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum".

      I hope this works well for you when you put it into practice!

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  3 місяці тому

      There are two things at play here: 1) Discovering and dialing in our ideal swing tempo, and 2) Feeling that transition - or the change in direction - so we don't rush our downswing from the top and thereby lose our sequencing (a very common affliction within the amateur golfing realm). Our perfect tempo/rhythm - which is unique to each of us individually - enables us to gather and unload the various components in proper order for seemingly effortless, powerful ball striking bliss. Executing a full shoulder turn is a key component for accomplishing this, since an abbreviated motion lacks both rhythm and a natural stopping point and thereby encourages the "hit" instinct to take over. In this regard a brief pause at the top can certainly help.
      Thanks for your message!

    "Keeping your arms straight" ...but shouldn't you want to have a pivot in your arms and wrists at a certain point in the swing since that helps with generating more clubhead speed?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Рік тому

      The "feel" is straight arms. Of course the wrists hinge and the trail arm folds to 90 degrees.
      If we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators - including a proper full wrist hinge - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power.

    Hi Tom , I ve been using this technique for years with great sucess with my iron , but I can t figure out how to use it with my driver …

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Рік тому +1

      Hi Vincent,
      Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the driver it can be attributed to one of the following:
      1) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with the driver as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing then their rotation takes over, inhibiting any further necessary forward weight loading (we should be 80/20 forward halfway down, 90/10 at impact, and 95/5 in the finish), changing the low point and rerouting the club into a steeper angle of attack. This can produce a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices.
      Of great importance is keeping your upper torso/head in place (in other words, not moving towards the target from a face-on view) while the hips execute the lateral slide action. This preserves the swing center and the desired shallow AoA.
      2) They are not allowing the length of the club to dictate the backswing path and are getting too steep as a result. The shaft length of the driver encourages more of an around the body backswing as established by the shaft plane at address. It may "feel" flat as they take it back along the shaft plane for the first few feet, but as long as they maintain the "weight forward, shoulder down, and hands in" components while allowing the club to work around them, it should put them in the proper position at the top so they can attack the ball from the inside. (A good feel for that lead shoulder is "down and in, under the chin".)
      3) Many believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" with the driver. However, consider that in our stock setup with the driver the hands are even with the inside of the lead thigh (as they are with all clubs when playing a standard shot) and our ball position is even with the inside of the heel of the lead foot. This presets a very slight degree of forward shaft lean with the driver. Beyond that, the ball is behind the zero-point of the swing (which is even with the lead shoulder), meaning that without any contrived manipulations the club will still be on its descent - albeit very close to flat - at impact. So, perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or those Long Drive participants teeing it extra high and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - in general the path is still ever so slightly down. In fact, the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.5 degrees - nearly level - and it should feel level - but slightly down nonetheless. (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws )
      Also, the online school will provide the tools you need to start mashing the driver. LOL! No! I was using JumboMax Ultralite grips in extra-large for much of 2022 and the first part of 2023. I had wanted to give them a try for a few reasons, including the fact that DeChambeau uses them and we share similar swing philosophies. I personally love the feel as well as how they help to keep my hands quiet through the zone.
      Now, having said that, I purchased a new set of PXG's in the spring of 2023, and since they don't carry the Jumbo's in-house I went with their largest available grip, which is a midsize. I absolutely love the clubs, and I'm putting the factory grips through the playing test before deciding whether or not to have them regripped. There are no issues with the Jumbos and I still really like the way they feel; that's just where I'm at presently.
      The Jumbos are not necessarily for everyone - and my fingers are a bit longer than average - so I routinely tell folks to "try before you buy." However, having a properly sized grip that feels both comfortable and secure is critically important as it is our only connection to the object that is going to deliver us blissful joy or deep anguish, yet it is perhaps also the most overlooked equipment fitting component in golf.

    What grip is that?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Рік тому

      I was using JumboMax Ultralite grips in extra-large in this video and several others up until around May of this year. I had wanted to give them a try for a few reasons, including the fact that DeChambeau uses them and we share similar swing philosophies. I personally love the feel as well as how they help to keep my hands quiet through the zone.
      Now, having said that, I recently purchased a new set of PXG's, and since they don't carry the Jumbo's in-house I went with their largest available grip, which is a midsize. I absolutely love the clubs, and I'm putting the factory grips through the playing test before deciding whether or not to have them regripped. There are no issues with the Jumbos and I still really like the way they feel; that's just where I'm at presently.

    Slower creates tension that is like winding up a rubber band if you make exact correct contact with the ball club speed at contact is the true measure of distance. Bat speed in baseball is the same thing. It’s physics.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Рік тому

      This swing system just happens to be rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and it is modeled on empirical observations of the game's most prolific ball strikers. No surprise then that it stands the test of time and does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, inclusive of the best players in the world today.
      It's so important to feel the transition in order to suppress the "hit" instinct that plagues the vast majority of amateur golfers in order to get the downswing started in the proper sequence, and slowing things down to identify and dial in our ideal rhythm is an excellent way to accomplish that. We are not slowing things down through the zone, and we are definitely not creating tension. Think in terms of Ernie Els and Fred Couples, for example.

      LOL!! YES!!! (My intro to golf came through the Tiger Woods '98 computer game....😎)
      There are two things at play here: 1) Discovering and dialing in our ideal swing tempo, and 2) Feeling that transition - or the change in direction - so we don't rush our downswing from the top and thereby lose our sequencing (a very common affliction within the amateur golfing realm). Our perfect tempo/rhythm - which is unique to each of us individually - thereby enables us to gather and unload the various components in proper order for seemingly effortless, powerful ball striking bliss.

    funny phenomena - he's talking a lot of technique, but really in any sport that requires a hip turn to maximize power (golf, baseball, tennis, hockey, even boxing, etc), the easier/smother one's motion feels the more power and speed one can actually achieve.

    That’s partially correct. Slowing down your swing will not help if tempo is off. I think a better way to put it would be to swing smoothly.

      If you were to view the full episode that this short clip was extracted from, you would understand that there are two things at play here: 1) Discovering and ingraining in our ideal swing tempo, and 2) Feeling that transition - or the change in direction - so we don't rush our downswing from the top and thereby lose our sequencing (a very common affliction within the amateur golfing realm).
