I went to a jazz club with Foley and a few other musicians one night (late 80s). It was jam session night which meant any musicians in the audience could get picked to come on stage and play with the house band. Well, Foley went up and made the bass players ax sound like a completely different instrument. The bass player got mad and took his bass back. We laughed about that for years! Columbus Ohio, Cleveland Avenue, Linden area. And Keith Staten was with us lol!
chris dave started out playing here in houston at the high school for performing and visual arts, made the STATE Jazz ensemble his freshman year...he played alot of local houston area gospel gigs with people such as Kim Burrell, but then he left houston and became probably the greatest drummer ever!!!
He's in a league of his own. That is, nobody can play a single one of his difficult records. Buddy Rich and Max Roach are also impossible to replicate, but I think those three are alone in that. He's definitely the greatest alive, no question.
At 8:44 Chris Dave plays a snare roll fill that sounds exactly like the response to the leader's call in the Kecak ceremony of Balinese monks (see the film Baraka for an epic presentation of this: v=aGXcnWUqV-Y)
Kudos for the sound on this video - everything is really clean! It needs to be for these kinds of musicians. Fun video to watch. We get to see another side of Dave - he's giving orders!
@simensolvang07 Hello, I did. It was shot on 3 cameras (2 PD150s and a domestic camcorder) and the sound is from a spaced pair of Rode mics plugged straight into one of the PD150s. Loads of compression and EQ in post!
@simensolvang07 They were NT1s. Unfortunately I can't remember any of the settings I used to mix the audio. I probably boosted the bass massively and put everything through Vintage Warmer. Luckily the sound in the venue was great in the first place (it's a small venue). Good luck with your recordings.
mine sounds really similar I have a tama rockstar 14" with a Remo Coated Controlled Sound Reverse Dot Snare Head (from guitar center) with the stock head on the bottom. My friend tuned it for me really really tight on top and the bottom is just like regular lol. If you know any gospel drummers around your area let them know they will get you this sound.
The way they jump in and out of polirhythms and diff time signatures is insane, each do them seperately and then gel, they are like musical calculators O_O
You can count any way you like, it's just gonna be in a different relation to the pulse. In indian music you get this used a lot, like going at one and a half-speed, a third of the speed, three times the original speed while keeping the original pulse etc, switching back and forth with time signatures while keeping the original pulse intact; the original pulse becomes part of the polyrhythm. I won't resolve on every 1 every bar, but it will eventually. You can also play only on off beats, not touching the downbeat during X bars, while not playing free.
"No one normal can notice this" wowowow dude we're all students of the music here you're not that skilled. I can keep the pulse the entire time of this video... and? I still can't play this shit. LOL
sadly, there are no gospel drummers in my country... I also tuned my snare (14x5.5) tight, but it doesnt sound like that, probably it's important to choose the right head. I have Remo coated ambassador
download audacity and record from the stereo mix that comes out the computer :) theres videos that show that here on youtube I think this guy called jimmyr did a good tutorial on it.
OMG! Please, somebody tell me! What technique does Chris use to get his single stroke that fast!?!? Is he using finger, wrist, arm...? The motions are so tiny it seems like he isn't even using ANYTHING. Like all that speed just comes out of nothing... Wait. MINDPOWER?
@takminister Thanks for the info! What kind of rode mics did you use? (I have a K2 I am about to get modded.) I was blown away by the bass tone inparticular. It sounded so live which is rare. What kind of compressor did you use? Ratio? Slow attack fast release? What kind of eq? was it broad sweeps? Across what frequencies? I am starting to do more live recording myself and am planing on using 2 mic setups as well. If you dont want to give away any secrets I understand. Thanks again!
he might, he went through music school, playing in the symphonic band and stuff. he might not count though, because this is a whole different ball game.
@cssource no doubt about it, they're all playin jazz. The sax player definitely seems a little lost towards the end there, he gets left out of the dialogue between Foley and Dave. He sure isn't playin any bad notes though, and he has no problem blowin over Foley and Dave while there off in their own world, at least during the head. So overall I'd say he's killin it.
@dimsim49 Chris is the leader of the band. Sax player was ready to stop, but Chris wanted to hear more, and he wanted to hear it a certain way. The sax player is very sensitive. When Chris digs in, so does he. He never grand stands like many unseasoned musicians can do. Much respect to Chris b/c after yelling "Play" to the saxophonist, he starts wailing. THAT made him play.
ten years on and still listening to this amazing jam !!
Foleys touch is outstanding, incredible dynamics and feel, and don't even start on how good the tone of his bass is.....

😂😂
I could hear Chris for 10 years straight and still be impressed every time...

+stank hooliganz Happy to help. 😎
what an absolutely underrated comment my friend! oh lord!
Stupid fixation. Lame
Kudos for the sound on this video - everything is really clean! It needs to be for these kinds of musicians. Fun video to watch. We get to see another side of Dave - he's giving orders!
Best 'free' trio material I've probably seen from within the last decade
couldn't agree more. I as a drummer too learned a lot from drummers as Weckl etcetera... but this guy.. he blows my mind and keep me going!

The sax player is the promoter, their actual sax player couldn't make the gig. This guy just jumped in, and I think he did pretty well considering.
No way, is that true? I mean Zhenya is a fucking god on his own right so it makes sense, but it all seems so well rehearsed and coordinated.
foly is the best. He's only musician thats been able to distract me from chris dave so far.
Love this. So much freedom and tension.
no one man should have all that power! chris daddy dave is the man!
I think Miles would be in the crowd listening to this. Thanks for keeping this true…
Houston's Own Jazz Great...on drums....Mr Chris Dave.....Chris "Daddy" Dave
Chris Dave is the greatest drummer alive.
Chris Dave = Freedom
thank you for taking us there :)
i cannot believe this drummer and this bassist. they are fucking magically good
Awesome tone on the jazz bass!

the look that chris gives foley at around 1:11 and foley's reaction is absolutley priceless. and the ends where they all walk off is beasty. lol.
"PLAY! PLAY, PLAY!!! PLAY LIKE HARD N SHIT!! lmao....even when he's salty he's too cool.......these cats are SMASHING
Foley's bass tone here is awesome.
I love Foley
awesome bassist

Amazing drummer, musically and technically
soooo inspiring!!!!
@ericwolff6 agreed! love the solo right around 5:00. so twisted souding
OMG I have the AAX version of the O-zone ccrash.....I'm soooo gonna buy another 18" crash and do that!!!
The way they jump in and out of polirhythms and diff time signatures is insane, each do them seperately and then gel, they are like musical calculators O_O
You can count 4 on all of them till the tune starts too. But why? That's my question. No one normal can notice this.

Didn't know that foley was in Miles davis' band. Damn.
the jazz player is kick ass, i don't know what everyones hussing about. he completes the sound in a different and meaningful way.
03:24 Heatman theme from MM2
I want his drum set.
sadly, there are no gospel drummers in my country... I also tuned my snare (14x5.5) tight, but it doesnt sound like that, probably it's important to choose the right head. I have Remo coated ambassador
chris dave is insane
his counting is truly out there ... if he evens counts at all
I'm guessing he doesn't count.
@ThePhodut index finger extension? i think thats just his knuckle poking out. getting rid of the index finger would ruin his fulcrum.
1:49 "what happened?!"
i don't fucking know, Chris, you tell me
that bass lick is ri-dunk-u-lus !!!! any one know what it is?
@wagglemonkey Yeah, but is it just me, or does he frequently play with index finger extended? Does that somehow affect his speed?
download audacity and record from the stereo mix that comes out the computer :) theres videos that show that here on youtube I think this guy called jimmyr did a good tutorial on it.

Wait.
MINDPOWER?
Found out yet?
no one will ever know
Someone, please tell me how to get that snare sound like this? :)
Chris is amazing! discovery for me
WHERE CAN I GET A HOODIE LIKE THAT!
Couldn't believe he was actually doing in that with open single stroke roll
foley is kickin ass!
@Rambonbon Really!? That's very interesting. If this be it-then that dude on alto is truly a God.
This is dangerous someone might can get killed haha if you play like this.
Are those O-zone hi-hats? Look at 2:56
is this on dvd/bluray ? I'd buy one right away.
@takminister Thanks for the info! What kind of rode mics did you use? (I have a K2 I am about to get modded.) I was blown away by the bass tone inparticular. It sounded so live which is rare. Alternative Fusion !!!!!!!!
is he wearing an HV jacket!
@takminister, the whole gig is just awesome. I know it might be a dumb question, but can you get this on dvd somehow?
Chris and Foley has amazing chemistry. Zhenga isnt bad either..
These guys are so gangsta
No. It's not Hubb. It's Foley, who played with Miles Davis in the 80s.
@jazzmac03 for real!!!!!!! music is music!!!! cudnt agree more with u
His band members must hate his guts haha. The bass player keeps rolling his eyes
In amazement.
He's definitely playing a consistent melody. This isn't bebop or swing yo! Its music. Everything isn't supposed to be westernized
REAL MUSICIANS
... i like his bass :X...
Does anyone know who recorded this and how? (straight out the board? converters? mics? setup? any mixing in the box?)
from 1:32 it sounds like a record scratched. unbelievable
from 1:00 to 1:13 is it singles or doubles? cant understand..
Aren't they all jazz players?
What kind of O-Zone is he using on his right?
anyone know the origin of this tune? is it one of Chris's originals?
It’s FOLEY's song "The Godfather" from his 1992 debut cd
At 3:08, Foley becomes my hero with that chord, haha.
What the **** is Zhenya Strigolev wearing?
YEAHH!!!!!!!!!!!
@wagglemonkey He doesn't really do it in this video. You can notice it in Indulging in Such, though.
omg i think i heard my heartbeat at 0:56
he might, he went through music school, playing in the symphonic band and stuff. he might not count though, because this is a whole different ball game.
this shit is just wow
@cssource no doubt about it, they're all playin jazz. The sax player definitely seems a little lost towards the end there, he gets left out of the dialogue between Foley and Dave.
