      Well, on one hand, I'd say he's one of the drummers.

    2:46 is just completely insane. He doubles every hit, snare hi hat and kick making it sound like a very short delay is applied. I don't even understand how he does that on the foot without double pedal. I've never seen anyone doing that as perfectly as him.

    the idea here that Chris is getting across is instrumental performance equivalent to mixing two different tracks like turntables. having one loop going while arbitrarily playing a counterpoint track over it. it's a very complex way of performing and a tests to the point that the drummer is not the only one that keeps track of time but that every musician is to keep that pulse.

    • @rillloudmother
      @rillloudmother 3 роки тому +5

      it is actually complex metric modulation, the different parts are all based on the same underlying pulse.

  • @holygroove2

    All music has a beginning, middle and end. That is form or structure. Free jazz can work exactly like it does here. I say free especially because of the way that Chris and Zhenya are playing - but they have roles. Chris is the leader who goes back and forth between playing with Zhenya or Foley or improvising when he wants to. Foley is taking the traditional bassist role (holding the time and the groove) and Zhenya plays the melodies and improvises at Chris' discretion. Love this vid.

    This is a great demonstration that a bass player can be a excellent time keeper. Sometimes the drummer can go off and do whatever he wants to. If the bass player is solid in what he knows to be the time signature. he can keep the time regardless of what is happening.

    For some reason I can't reply the relevant people but this is in response to 2CProductionsZAR's comment.
    I think the point this is the tension created by Chris and Zhenya playing against the bass player's groove. He grooves it so hard and stays solid the whole time they are playing this whack rhythm across it and when it comes back its just the most kick ass thing. They could just groove on the same thing but I think it would be less exciting. That's what I think anyway.
