I'm so happy to have found your channel. I have been wanting to get into some crafts that I can enjoy with my son Billy. He is 15. He stopped talking when he was three due to autism. He is my best friend. Anyhow I wanted to find something safe to enjoy with him that is cheap and easy for both of us to understand. So again thank you.
One thing I would add to your list, you have to have a passion for what you do. It can't just be based on money. You have to have a passion for it, in my humble opinion. Plus selling online is where it's at. But just going out in public to country fairs or whatever should also be considered. There may be a lot of people online selling rings but you may be an island unto yourself when it comes to local talent to sell rings.

Hi, I've been making jewellery for a number of years after doing a 3 yr stint training as a silversmith, I've always loved making Jewellery but find it hard pricing an item to sell and I reiterate what you stated about undercutting and overpricing the customer as this will put customers off. I just need to understand how you price e.g a sterling silver adjustable wrapped beaded ring after you've weighed it to find out the gram. Where do you go from there to get it right with the pricing. Much appreciate your feed back and help. And I love your own creativity and originality with your wooden rings.
    Peace
    Love

Because of your channel and the ones you've mentioned I started making rings. I purchased a mini lathe from harbor freight in January, which is working quite well. I've made about a dozen rings and there is definitely a learning curve! You make it look very easy. However I will say that after you make a couple of rings it starts getting easier and then the creative mind starts to flow. I have also recorded the ring making progress and will be posting videos on my ring making skills. I hope you will have them come across your (recommend for you list) and will give some constructive criticism. Go easy on me please. I love your channel and look forward to future videos. Keep up the great work! And if the other channels you've mentioned get to see this post, you guys are awesome as well! Zebrano Wood Craft is definitely one of the great channels!

What is a fair rate to sell my rings for? Should I take cost of the materials and double it for my labour? Should I charge an hourly rate? What % should I add on to cover the cost of miscellaneous expenses such as tape, sandpaper, polish etc?

um well i guess i might as well ask bc i cant stop thinking about it. I'm 17 and not to long ago dislocated my elbow so i cant partake in any of my other hobbies such as mointainbiking and those sorts of things then somehow saw a video of making silver inlay rings and something sparked bc i have tried knifemaking in the past and made a few but it was just so time consuming with hand tools and hard to keep the motivation. Basically two days before my girlfriends birthday I gave it a shot and cranked out 2 silver rings one torques inlay the other opal and i only had up 600 grit paper but i was quite impressed with what i had made and their quality for them being my first tries and rushing to get them done, now that she is wearing them i just found it hard to believe how many people complimented her on them and asked her about them like where she got them and when it was mentioned i made them all they could ask was how lol. so i decided to get some more tools bc i think if i just spent some more time on them they could be the same or better than some of the similar styles on Esty and such websites.
sorry for so many useless words my real question is if i can pull off making them to that sort of quality how does one go about even selling/building a customer base, i know it would take time but i thought it would be fun and maybe turn into something, its a long shot but worth a try. Also when you actually go to sell them do you start by making a few rings in popular sizes and listing them somewhere or do you post pictures of one and wait for the slim chance someone emails you or something about getting one in a certain size?

I have already started making rings, got plenty of compliments still a big room for improvement.
I feel lost, I am in a country (Dubai) where no-one is familiar or ever heard of wooden rings.
No one here makes wooden rings which is an advantage, I saw your video on how to price the rings but when I applied the formula I thought it might be expensive in a place where people tend to buy accessories made of gold and precious stones rather than wood.
By the way I am a big fan of everything you do, starting from being very creative and talented in what you do, to wishing to do what you did (escaping call center 🤦‍♂️), ending with being a very courteous person who is not keeping knowledge to himself and sharing what he knows and encouraging people to start doing what they love by sharing your revenue from ring making, bro you are believe me a role model who does not keep knowledge to himself.

I have biggest problem with pricing. For example I make sterling silver ring with blue opal inlay (all handmade), currently with discount for 60EUR, but most people from our country think it is too expensive and they bought "same" ring from Aliexpress for 10EUR. Of course it is fake silver and opal... A lot of people are spoiled with cheap stuff and are not willing to pay for handcrafted items.
Fortunately I have few very satisfied customers and hope to grow my business :)

There are a lot of UA-cam videos on pricing your work. Most all are good but you have to figure out the way that works best for you. You need to pay yourself fairly as you are your boss. So look at it from an employee perspective and if you were applying for a job but they were not going to pay you a fair hourly wage would you take the job? One of my fears in making handmade things like rings is what if they break, or warp, or who knows what because I have not been around for years to test and retest every material. Does this concern you with yours, or did it at the beginning?

When I was starting out I made a lot of rings and abused them to death to find out how I could make them more durable. Hammers, washing machines and microwaves were all employed lol.
Now I have a lot of customers so I know that if looked after my wooden rings will last for years. Some people still punish them though. It’s just a matter of letting people know that you can’t wear a wooden ring while playing rugby or doing deadlifts!
If durability is a concern then maybe learn how to make rings with hardier materials like precious metals/steel etc.

Love this video. I only make rings for fun but I do other things with the intent of selling like sculptures etc. I actually did start an online shop and had some sales but my biggest struggle for the last few years has been depression. My shop has been empty as a result. I tell myself daily I am being ridiculous because I remember the joy I felt at creating but when I think about making something I just skip it.
Maybe I am worried I won't feel the same or maybe worried that in this mindset nothing I make will be good. I lost two close family members - they were anchors for me - they kept me centered. I have been a little lost without them. I want to stop drifting but I just haven't figured out how yet really. I have tried many times to sit and create but I just sit there staring. I need to get it sorted though because my goal list is just stagnant and I am not getting any younger. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. :D

What do you mean with sizing dude? I guess my advice would be to keep practicing as it’s not easy at all! Use woods that are easy to bend like cherry or maple and just make 50-100 rings. That will build up a lot of muscle memory and dexterity in your fingers and you’ll find your flow.

With rings being such a personalized piece of jewelry, one usually thinks custom made. In doing rings as speculative work, what is your formula for determining what sizes to make? They’re not one size fits all jewelry!

    • @ZebranoWoodCraft
      @ZebranoWoodCraft  4 роки тому

I don’t really have a formula as such. Mostly I advise customers to visit 2-3 jewellery stores to get help with their sizing or to purchase ring sizing gauges online. When they roughly know their size I send out simple mock up rings for them to test (normally simple bent wood rings or aluminium). That’s the best way I’ve found to do it over the years!
