I watched it in the theater, it was a huge deal. The only game that has ever been premiered in a movie. I remember everyone knew the game was gonna be Super Mario Bros 3 and when it came out in the movie, it was an incredible feeling. My dream as a kid was to compete in the Nintendo championship. I never got to do it though.

They almost INVENTED E-Sports. Nintendo World Championship, Nintendo PowerFest, Nintendo Whateverthenameis. They were not kidding around back then!
They did not fully invent it because such events were held earlier already. Also, some great players, err, I mean back then you thought they were great players, like Todd Rogers and Billy Mitchell were heroes of high-score hunting. Deep fall from grace, but that legacy of them still is an important one.

That's a great info I didn't know yet, and I am into video games for over 25 years (I think I played the NES at 4 or so already, and the SNES at 6 or 7, my mother got me Secret of Mana for christmas 1993). I know about Swordquest from the AVGN, I know about the Atari badges, about the Arcade tournaments (although not much about those) in the early 1980s. But I never heard of "Star Soldier caravans" until now. Thanks for sharing! If you know other history details about speedrunning/tournaments/high-score hunting/etc., please don't hesitate and let us also know!

This was a huge deal. I remember when this came out, and I can't even think of anything today that would compare. This movie was everyone's first look at Super Mario Bros. 3, since it hadn't yet been released. The game was also above and beyond anything that had been seen in the previous two games, pretty much light years ahead of them. It was the first time I had heard of there even being video game competitions, the forerunner to today's esports. Not only all of this, but the game was just GOOD. Like GOAT material.

The video games and tournament were always more significant to Corey and Haley. Jimmy only wanted to go to California to put the last memories of his late twin sister to rest. Other characters are shown going on personal journeys as well with Jimmy being the uniting force for them. Yes, this movie is and will be remembered for prominently featuring Nintendo games, but it also had some heart.

As a child of the 80s(I turned 13 in '89), whose leisure time was dominated by playing the NES in the late 80s, this was the most fitting movie to be the final one.

Till this day I still think it's hilarious that it was somehow written into the script that Jimmy's friends would shout out specific tips to him about a game that wasn't even out then. It was written into the plot that this was a new game that no one had played. That was part of the challenge for the players. There's so much wrong with this scene I just laugh the entire time.

While it was released in the US in 1990, SMB3 had released in Japan in 1988, a year before this movie came out. So it's possible that during Jimmy's "training" they played some Famicom games.

I was 9 when this came out...it hit theaters before Mario 3 came out, and it was insane to see this before the game release. Gaming and life was more pure back then. Such nostalgia. Extra are the kids in the background holding their arms up, probably because of multiple takes. Lol

  • @metalgrinch

I remember when this came out in theaters, i was 8 in 1989. We had already played Super Mario Bros 1 and 2, and seeing that 3 at the end was just amazing. Simply amazing. We couldn't believe what we were going to get soon (as the movie came out before the game was released). Gaming was way different back then. Since there was much less competition and Nintendo was basically the ONLY thing that existed (or even mattered), it was like God Himself bringing a gift to the whole of society all at once. That may sound pretty far-fetched when put that way but i cant think of a better comparison. People bitch now about this game being a shameless Nintendo ad, but we simply didn't care. We DID NOT CARE. It's still a very well directed and entertaining and hysterical film.
You just really had to be there.

SergeTheBlerge I agree. I didn’t see the movie when it came out, but I definitely remember the impact of SMB 3 being at the end. I remember seeing a preview of the movie and THAT got me hyped for the game. So I can just imagine the feeling if I was seeing this final scene in the movie theater for the first time back then. It’s hard to explain that feeling to a person who wasn’t living during that time, or weren’t that concerned about video games. You have to understand the CONTEXT of why this movie scene is so special

They spent a lot of time, and dad's credit card money, on calling the Nintendo hotline and reading through gaming magazines, so it's very possible he knew from there. But also, more importantly, a lot of us gamers simply have certain instincts, and when you see something like where the first whistle is found, that castle wall coming down, you might instinctively think "Why's it like that? Is it for me to fly over?" and having played Super Mario Bros. 1 the first warp pipes kind of do the same thing.

All you had to do was stop by the news station and put in your name and phone number and they would display some names on the screen during the Nightly News. The first person to call in won the game for Nintendo and also two tickets to Universal Studios and free entry into the video game tournament that they have there which promoted this movie. So what I did was I called the new station and then hung up so we would be programmed into redial on my touch tone phone.
