  • After the 4 season ad campaign Barbour was running on Netflix, otherwise known as The Crown, a lot of folks are kitting themselves out with a wax cotton jacket. But are they worth the hype surrounding them?
In this video, I take a look at the Barbour Ashby and we find out why this model could be better than the other popular Beaufort or Bedele for most of us out there.

I chose the lightweight Ashby. Super jacket, and after a couple of years with it, I couldn’t be happier. I’ve sent it in for a minor repair and rewax, which is an excellent service.

What I like about Barbour is while they make a few more modern looking clothing items, their basic formula for their regular jackets hasn't changed that dramatically, they found something timeless and practical and people still buy them because of their reputation rather than any new fad factor.
I've got a waxed quilted jacket that was an exclusive design Barbour did for John Lewis, it's great for colder weather and it's so good I'm definitely picking up one of their larger jackets with the large pockets and storm sleeves.

Just got an Ashby. Absolutely love it. Totally agree with everything you say. I went for a size up to accommodate suit jacket underneath, but it works great with just a shirt and jumper because of the cut/fit and it hangs great. Your vid was one that helped me choose over the Bedale and Beaufort. Thanks man 👍

Hi! Came to say two things. First, the last couple of videos have been solid, really enjoyed the nuanced reviews and talks. A much better format than the typical menswear “here are 55 of the best white t shirts available of which 42 of them are uniqlo’. Second - I got my bedale recently and it seems like it was made specifically for German shitty cold springs. Happy that I got it. Cheers, keep them coming!

I recommend that women take a look at the Ashby when shopping for a Barbour jacket. I am 5’10/medium framed and I find the women’s jacket sleeves are too short. Also, the underarm is cut quite high and the shoulders are too narrow across the back for a good range of movement, or allow for a lot of layering underneath. The cut of the Ashby makes for a great slim but still roomy cut for women. My only problem with the Ashby is the polyester lining on the sleeves. I live in the Mid-Atlantic US, and the humidity even in winter turns the arms of that jacket into a sauna. Barbour will replace the lining in the sleeves with the tartan lining for a small fee, so I will be sending it back to them this summer to be redone.
FYI - My guess is that the small flap at the base of the zipper is most likely meant to help prevent you catching your sweater or shirt into the zip when you zip up. A full length one is meant as a wind/weather barrier, but it isn’t necessary (and would add bulk) on a jacket that already has an exterior flap, so a short "mangle guard" like this would make sense. As a repeat sweater mangler, I like it!
Others further down in the comments have mentioned they see a quality difference between the Ashby and the jackets made in England. I personally don’t. My husband got a Bedale on the same trip I got the Ashby, and we already have 2 Burghley’s from the 80’s. I looked at all of them together, and the Ashby had all of the same materials and traditional finishing details, used the same weight thread, and all the seams were stitched evenly and smoothly/corners were turned nicely and fabric grain was straight on all panels. The only difference was that the Ashby used more stitches per inch on the shoulder and side seams (the same number that is used on all seams but the shoulder/side seams across all the models I have). This could be a machining issue that is specific to that factory, or just a style issue specific to the design of the Ashby. Either way, I don't see a difference in quality, but I guess I'll know for sure in 10 years or so.

Another great video. From my side I’ve own two Barbours one was a black belted version with an obnoxious Union Jack lining - that soon left the fold, the other was the Japanese Bedale which was a shorter cut - good jacket but I didn’t like the generic look over time. I’ve had a Belstaff Trialmaster and thought that was a great city jacket - just got it in the wrong colour so that left as well.
So the jacket I’m running atm is the Rogue Territory Waxed Supply Jacket because it’s phenomenal in every aspect.

Great video!! I always enjoy seeing something reviewed that I have. I purchased the Ashby because of the fit. I really really like it and my only complaint is the type of wax that barbour uses. Having an oil base, it's a lint magnet. I also have a Flint and Tinder waxed trucker jacket. It also fits well, is durable and doesn't have the lint issue. I had a Filson Tin Cloth Cruiser jacket. Very high quality, but very boxy and unflattering. I gave it to a friend who works on a farm. I would buy the Barbour and the Flint and Tinder again if something happened to either. Keep up the great work!!

20 years in on a Gordon lined Beaufort this year. Been back home twice for repairs and re-wax. It has just gotten better with age. Picked up a new one last summer at a very good price, haven't even worn it yet though as a tall guy its sleeves and body is a bit longer than the original one. Are there better jackets? Probably but none that allude so much charm.

What would be your footwear choice if you lived in an area that was wet and snowy? 6:22 that flap most likely is to prevent stagging the zipper on your sweater or shirt when you open or close the jacket using the bottom zipper.

Great choice, Matt. I have Barbour (International) and Belstaff (Trialmaster) and pretty much live in them more than any leather jacket. They're very practical for the city with lots of big pockets. Very easy to layer, too. My only complaint is that they're not very easy to clean and the wax can sometimes have a smell if not stored properly.

I did go with Filson Short Lined Cruiser though for the same reason you went with Barbour...proximity. Additionally I have the Outback Outfitting Pathfinder which is my winter lined oilskin, and a Pack Animal (newer brand) unlined Adventure Jacket which is as you say not as comfortable as a lined, but looks great and is fine for the warm rain we have in the summer in Colorado. @@CeeAreDee I don't know when you were communicating with Pack Animal but the original owners got bought out by Tobacco Motorwear. My interactions with them have been easy and interesting in that you can contact customer service via SMS. They responded quickly and made the changes I requested to my order before it shipped out (sized up after reading a few reviews). I completely understand getting a questionable vibe simply because they are relying on the same social media advertising methods as so many other small brands and scam brands are, making it hard to spot real products. Nonetheless, the product arrived as expected and in a timely fashion so now it is just about long term wear and quality. I'd be willing to send or post pics of my purchase on Instagram if people have questions on the product.

@@CeeAreDee Well, you may be right about the vibe. Yesterday they announced a Memorial Day sale on Pack Animal merchandise. The Adventure Jacket gets a 10% discount on their website. for really harsh cold and winter, i have the barbour international tantallon wax jacket....it is truly amazing...i love it to bits...and it doesnt matter how cold or wet or sleety it gets this thing does the job.
the only warmer barber is the none wax antarctic parka...but that was just too warm for anything except extreme cold winter...so not practical enough for me
the tantallon takes me through october - march... ie autumn and winter..
for april to september...i use a variety of bomber jackets that look fantastic and the barbour lutz, ..it looks great, a bit like a sports jacket and if you get the none winter version, is pretty right for spring and autumn as it doesnt have quilted lining which although thin, gets really warm...the barbour lutz is the best jacket for cool city wear, it is slick as can be and looks great...some prefer the barbour dept b.... which james bond wore...but it has too many buttons and gadgets and silly pockets for my liking...the barbour lutz is like it without all the nonsense.
there are 2 more jackets from barbour i would consider...the short hooded bedale..which is great for a more casual look and has immediate hood...and the barbour corbridge wax jacket..which is great , looks slick, and has a hidden hood if necessary...but if you have a tantallon you just dont need the corbridge, as they are both winter jackets with quilted lining, but the tantallon is just warmer , tougher and built in hood..it is solid
so my picks are barbour tantallon and barbour lutz.
there is also another fantastic jacket i nearly bought which was john lewis exclusive ....the barbour tomorrows archive helmsfort...but this jacket is thinner and lighter than the tantallon, so not as warm, but it is lighter and is a bit more flashy..and a nice sage or blue type colour and has a fixed hood...it is on a par with the corbridge but more expensive and has the fixed hood...it would get you through from august to april, but wouldnt be as warm as my tantallon in cold winter in the uk...so if i could only afford one barbour it would be a choice between the corbridge and the helmsfort....but luckily i can afford 2.

Just picked up my first Barbour, the Border, a longer length version, keeps my backside dry when out on photography assignments and sitting on wet ground, logs, chairs etc. There is no big poacher pocket on the bum but two individual internal pockets that have removable waterproof liners, they are huge you can lose your lunch, a cold drink, a book, and a lot more in them. I have to say that the coat appears excellent, still too early to determine whether it will be long lasting but reviews seem to suggest it will be with me a good few years.

Well just to show off, my barbour inside pocket is brass press stud closure. I find biggest downside is the nylon lined sleeves, any exertion= sweaty arms. Wish they had just lined sleeves with same tartan cotton as the body. No idea what model mine is but its 8oz beeswax cotton outer, and moleskin collar.

Agree on the arms, but mine seems to get a bit better in that regard once it is worn and used for some time. I also own the Barbour International Imboard as well. That jacket was hopeless in the start, all sweaty all the time and I went back to my allways trusted Fjellreven. I allways brought the Barbour with me just to give it some wear and tear. After about one season it just went very good; warm, still OK for rain, and not moisty at all. So now it is my go to jacket and it has got that beautiful worn look to it. Put on a binoculars and I look like a WW2 U-boat captain. Which I dont mind:D

Nothing long distance or at high speeds out on the highway, but just for chasing around the city on the weekend. You mentioned you put a denim jacket underneath yours, but I was thinking about a wool liner (long sleeved, not a vest). I know Filson makes one, but it's pricey. I was wondering if you knew of another quality manufacturer who makes a wool jacket liner. All your arguments hold true: I loved my Barbour Jacket for all those points. LoveD. Truth is: If you do anything more in those jackets than going shopping or having a coffee, they will make you sweat badly. Let a few years pass by and that sweat makes the jackets stink and there is no way to that smell off since you cannot wash it.
Also, anything more than a slight drizzle of rain, and you'll be wet in waxed cotton. So now, once it rains, I skip the style thing and throw on an Arcteryx Gore jacket: keeps me dry, weighs nothing, and I can throw it into the washer whenever I need to.

Good vid Sir, got to say, I find wax cotton, nippy. got a few pieces, Cabourns Orange Nam Jacket, Filson Tin cloth Cruiser and A Barbour / White Mountaineering Kitefin. All good for the most part. Primarily, as they don't get worn too often. The breath-ability is poor and cleaning is a issue. Filson I'd say was the best, the finish wears the best. The Nam Jacket which is unlined is frankly annoying. the wax gives it a transparency meaning wearing it requires careful selection in the base layer. The Barbour is (as you say) good for most things, though, Iv'e found does have an odour with prolonged wear (no its not me, I am generally rather fragrant) and that's something that's peculiar to Barbour, that's my thoughts on my waxed pieces. I've always fancied a Belstaff Trailmaster, though, hard to justify £600 with an already extensive jacket collection!

Great video, but i'm not totally conviced by the Ashby. it depends on your morphology.
You said that the fit is the most important, so for a tall or big guy the beaufort or bedale can be a better alternative than the ashby because both are roomy and so more confortable. the ashby can be ok for small or medium gabarits.

Simple: For town stuff -> waxed cotton jacket, for real outdoor stuff -> polyester jacket. For weight reasons alone, I could never image bringing a waxed cotton jacket to a hiking trip. At the same time, I really do find it funny, when people are wearing their 600$ Goretex Arcteryx jacket for picking up groceries. People really need to learn when to use what in the right context and here in Germany people love to hurt others people’s eyes with their outdoor clothing. I went with the Bedale as I am quite stocky and muscular and the Bedale has more room in the shoulders. Also, I tend to get quite hot and the Ashby felt a bit too hot for me.

The Barbour Ogston is a pretty good choice for me personally. It’s a heavier 8oz material with leather patches on the elbows, cut more like a slim field or shooting coat and with a padded storm vest. I’ve been using it for some years now and it’s good up to mild frost with the proper layering beneath. Most importantly, it’s perfect for riding bike in an urban surrounding. Heavier than Ashby (and my old Bedale if memory serves), but looking smart, yet still on the practical side as opposed to the Bond Beacon jacket that’s a favourite with some.

Matt wonderful content on the Ashby. The true problem with most Barbours is the acetate sleeves. This jacket should excel in mid 40s to mid 60 degree weather. When any activity is done in this jacket your arms sweat. I grew tired of this very problem and let go of my Ashby and Steve McQueen Barbour jacket. You can’t wash them so there is also that dilemma. My recommendation, and this jacket will replace the Barbour, is the private white vc twin track jacket. It costs 3x the Barbour but is superb in construction and materials. If you can find a shop in Berlin that carries private white I truly recommend slapping one on your back. I own a field jacket from them and no longer require finding another jacket...it does everything for my NYC dwelling. Enjoy your reviews KK

god yes, the lining is awful, especially if it has the sweater cuff. You end up in what feels like a hermetically sealed plastic bag and once you start sweating, even just a little bit, you'll stay damp and nasty until you take it off again. Every single time I wear it I feel miserable and regret putting it on, not to mention buying it in the first place.

    • @jasonreeve3040
      @jasonreeve3040 Рік тому +1

Yeah, I have the Asby, and the lining is terrible - it feels cheap compared to my Trailmaster (which was 300 pounds more). The Ashby is well priced and looks good. But, there are much better quality Barbour jackets, imho (I've had one of the hunter style Barbour jackets in the past which felt much better quality). The Ashby is good value for money, and a nice jacket, as long as you can avoid humidity and action that would cause arm sweating.

In reality though it’s a great jacket and I’ve owned for about 5 or so years now and still going strong and it does indeed look better now.

I still don't know why so many people hype the Ashby, for me a complete failure and a jacket unworthy of Barbour. Only those who never wore vintage Barbour can love this thing. The Ashby is nothing more than a slim fit Bedale, that's all. It kept all the defects of the Bedale (too short in winter and not enough pockets... I only wear those I have in spring and fall), and it added new ones : as it is slim fit, the Ashby isn't as comfortable as a Bedale, let alone longer Barbours, and the inner part of the sleeves is made in an horrible synthetic fabric, all things that can easily make you sweat like a pig. If you want a really good Barbour, get a Moorland (vintage if possible). It's longer and has a very useful wallet pocket under the flap and a rear game pocket, very handy even if you are not a hunter. For me, the best of all, though I also love my Solway, the most elegant of all Barbours, or even a Sapper, so warm with its padded lining. But please, forget the Ashby ! And try to find a 80-90's made jacket, in those days they were still litteraly made by hand and in the UK. None of the newly mad ones can match them ! Just compare a 80-90's made Moorland, Norhumbria or Bedale with a newly made one, and you'll understand what I mean...
