As a gift for graduating from university, I was given a Barbour Ashby with a fur lined insert. My family was modestly in a low point where my father had lost his job and we were surviving on fumes, but his sacrifices led me to complete higher education. I insisted on not buying that jacket because of its price point, but three years later, it’s in my wardrobe, and I’ll gladly keep wearing it well into my adulthood, wax on, wax off, always reminding me of the love and perseverance that runs in my family.
I thought waxed jackets were weird and impractical for years until I bought a Filson short lined cruiser jacket before a 1500 mile motorcycle road trip. Four years later, it's one of my favorite and most prized garments. It's warm, durable, has an impeccable cut, and absorbs so much character from the environment you use it in. That one's obviously not on your list here, but between this video and your waxed jacket video from a few months ago, it's great seeing waxed jackets get some well-deserved love and attention. Love your stuff.
Brit living in Wales where annual rainfall is measured in yards - classic Barbour jackets last generations not years. Patina up lovely but can restore to an as new like condition with a re-wax . You can also send your jackets off for repair and re-wax to Barbour. Barbour and Belstaff also make biker style waxed jackets and Steve McQueen regularly wore a Barbour biker jacket and you can't get a cooler recommendation than that.
@@casuallyworked I ordered a large and it ended up fitting like a glove. My best fitting jacket. I wouldn’t say it stretched a ton but it did loosen up a little the more I wear it. I rarever button these style of jackets though.
The best waxed jacket I've ever seen was a Ralph Lauren Purple Label jacket. I was a waiter on Madison Avenue and this guy would come in frequently wearing this jacket. It was a hunter green diamond quilted hunting jacket with brown leather collar and matching narrow leather cuff hems. The sick thing about it was that quilting was waxed over fine tightly woven cotton duck canvas. It's the first and only time in my life I saw a waxed quilted jacket. Ralph Lauren waxed the canvas before it was quilted and then waxed it one more time over the stitching. OMG, it was gorgeous and he knew how much I liked it. 20 years ago, it was $2,000. Ralph Lauren only made this jacket for one season but it's seared in my mind forever. Barbour can't touch it.
The Huckberry one looked a little boxy on me so I got the Rogue Territory from Stag Provisions because they offer it lined with Japanese wool. They don’t block coupons on anything either so I got it for a decent discount. Can’t recommend it enough. The liner really seals it.
That’s funny timing. I just got my Freenote cloth riders jacket in Oak today. I wear an XL in most shirts, mostly due to my wide shoulders and large chest. The XL fits perfectly. Sleeves are an inch or so too long, but I’ll live with it, could have them mended I’m sure, but it’s completely usable. I’m 5’10” so that’s the main issue with the sleeve length.
Kace from Yellowstone wears the Freenote Rider, too. Double famous guys jackets! Another good one to look at - Iron & Resin Rambler jacket. It's also US made and unlined. They have a lined version (Scout) which is also very nice, but not US made. Their Cruiser jacket is bigger and thicker, kind of a competitor to the Ship John Wills jacket on a budget.
Ive had the freenote cloth jacket for almost 2 years now. It really is the pinacle of all waxed jacketets IMO. The main selling point for me though are the arm gussets. I have broad shoulders and I get easily annoyed if I don't have full arm mobility, which isn't an issue at all with this jacket.
Had the same issue. I'm Mike's size height wise (5'9"), but had to get a large because at 165lbs I could barely get the medium on and once on my arms were locked into imaginary lat syndrome posture. Large is a bit roomier everywhere, but still a nice fit.
Hi, I don't understand the sizing guide on this jacket. Everything appears normal except the sleeve length. any idea where they measure their sleeves on a persons body? they seem to be about 10 inches shorter than most other jackets sizing guides. color me confused. thanks for any help!
@@TheJeremyOtto I'm not going to measure rn but I'm 6'1 with pretty average length arms for my size, and I own a large. I do a half roll sort of thing with mine on the sleeve cuff to shorten them about an inch because they are a bit long on me. Anyway, hope that gives you a bit of a reference.
My dude,! Ya gotta tell us which one was your favorite!! I’ve had the RT jacket for over a year now and my #1 lesson learned is… you want a liner in a waxed jacket. Nothing worse than sweating, even just a bit and having it just stick to your skin as the jacket doesn’t breath. That, and because the RT is such a specific fit caused me to go on the hunt for a new waxed jacket. And after trying the Huckberry and Filson I went with the lined Huckberry. The Filson was nice but looked too much like a work coat and I’m happy to sacrifice a bit of the style the RT jacket has, for a jacket that is more versatile. If someone here is looking for a deal on the RT in a M, hit me up. Cheers!!
I have the Huckberry version with the flannel lining, worn it for about a month, absolutely love it. As I'm sure you know, it's been rainy as hell around NYC lately, and colder, and this jacket has been fantastic.
Nice I’m about to get one. I live up in Oregon and if you don’t know the Pacific NW is known for rain so I’m hoping that the waxed canvas will keep me dry.
Just got the Hucberry Hudson; the trucker's less popular but more rugged and secretly sexy brother that everyone fancies when they turn 30. It's epic. Has handwarmers under waist pockets which is just the most civilised thing you can do (take not Barbour Duke makers), and is fully lined with some understated plaid cosiness, and unlike my RGT Supply (which I fucking adore), actually keeps rain out as opposed to seducing each droplet and welcoming it in for a martini and a shag. Why does nobody talk about the Hudson? It's a god damn megababe of a jacket.

I jsut got my RTG waxed jacket last week and it has been amazing. I got mine in a size a bit larger to I could layer my iron heart flanel and a hoodie and the fit is still nice and slim. I think the only complaint I have are the sleeves being to long and the cuff opening to large but I will see in a few weeks and see what stacking happens.
Have you seen the NJ based brand Heatstraps? That's what I'm eyeing! 👀 I had a vintage (1950's) waxed jacket passed down to me by my gram... but it was 1/2 an inch thick from so much wax and had no lining... eeeek it was so functional but didn't feel good to wear. I feel you, I NEED a lining in these coats!
Fab video as ever, top job! 👍 That said, I’d really like to see you put your sights on a Peregrine Bexley jacket one of these days. There don’t seem to be any reviews about their output on UA-cam. It’s a bit different style-wise from these “rider” thingies, closer to the Barbour range - but less steep on the wallet. Please consider giving them a proper review one of these days. Cheers!
Great video! Would love to see your opinion of the Iron & Resin Cruiser jacket. It's a favorite of mine, and saw it as a huge upgrade over the Huckberry jacket.
I had a BM bag, but after having a laptop in it and traveling with it. It's just too heavy in the long run. Weight is an issue when you're travelling, walking around a city. Beautiful, well-made bag, but if it were lighter, it would have more function. Also, there are lined Huckberry and RGT jackets... LOL

Impulse bought the Huckberry jacket. It was on sale for $125 and, when I looked, the only option available was one singular jacket that happened to be in my size.
Did I just fall for marketing? Probably. We'll see if it was a mistake.
The Freenote looks so great
I jsut got my RTG waxed jacket last week and it has been amazing. I got mine in a size a bit larger to I could layer my iron heart flanel and a hoodie and the fit is still nice and slim. I think the only complaint I have are the sleeves being to long and the cuff opening to large but I will see in a few weeks and see what stacking happens.
You should try Outerknown blanket shirt. I think you’ll like it.
Did you address why you are returning the Rogue Territory jacket? Because it's unlined?
You should check out the Ship John Ramblin’ jacket.
I got a waxed jacket this morning. Along with my early morning jacket
Wranglers! Im impressed.
What about Heatstraps
Have you worn the quilted waxed shirt jac...I just got one.... pretty freaking cool...kinda lightweight..
Your energy at the beginning of this video reminded me of Adam Chase from Jetlag the Game
I feel you, I NEED a lining in these coats!
i love your videos, really inspires me to get good fitting clothes
I own both the flannel lined and wool lined Flint and Tinder trucker jackets.
Fab video as ever, top job! 👍
That said, I’d really like to see you put your sights on a Peregrine Bexley jacket one of these days. There don’t seem to be any reviews about their output on UA-cam. It’s a bit different style-wise from these “rider” thingies, closer to the Barbour range - but less steep on the wallet. Please consider giving them a proper review one of these days.
Cheers!
1. Ship John
2. Tin duck
3. Freenote cloth
4. Filson
5. Iron and resin
Great video! Would love to see your opinion of the Iron & Resin Cruiser jacket. It's a favorite of mine, and saw it as a huge upgrade over the Huckberry jacket.
Surprised to not see the Filson short lined cruiser here
Today's date is Sept 19/2024, nearly 1 year later and OMG, look at the price increases for all of these jackets.
Joe Biden
Joe Biden
buck mason has had some niced waxed deck jackets
Did you size up for the Bradley Mountain jacket like they recommended? I did for mine and I was curious how you feel about it.
Have you ever tried or looked into outback trading company jackets? I wonder how those might compare to these
An interesting one, though it is far more, is the permanent style wax walker.
Great video Mr. Snail.
One of the few channels where i click immediately
did someone mention already that the rgt will shrink if its get too wet? i shrunk an L to an M due to a sudden heavy rainfall. now i need a new one.
I think Filson has one of these to
I like your backpack, I got the same one in forest green.
LOL
Shipjohn is the king of waxed jackets. I’ll get mine in another year😂
Are Schaeffer Outfitter sizes similar to Carhartt? If I wear a M in Carhartt jackets, would I probably be a M in Schaeffer as well?
"i feel like ghost rider before his head explodes" had me bursting out laughing lol
What do you think about the Thursday Boot Company waxed cotton jacket? Those guys are killing it in the boot department. Haven't tried any of their clothing yet.
Great video on wax jackets for the AUTUMN 🧐
Hey Michael, I think it’s time for an updated “Jacket Collection” video ??
“I feel like ghost rider right before his head explodes” This was hilarious
Hi Michael awhile ago you mentioned you were a fan of the Filson cruiser waxed jacket I think? Is there a reason you didn't include that one here? Thanks!
No mention of barbour? Arguably the most famous wax jacket
that's in the first version of this vid!
How are you gonna be able to put 2 pairs on at once! Ill have to wait a few days I guess. Can't wait!
