I'm amazed in 2024 anyone pays for the BBC. I doubt I'd return to TV if the fee was abolished.

I see it every now and then when I visit people. I've not yet seen anything I would want to watch at home, apart from the news but I can get that online anyway. Everything else I have seen seems to be trash or outdated.

@@MiningForPies Thanks! Actually there was a detector van in my street back then and the 2 men were sitting at the back of the van with the back doors open I took a peek and so there was nothing in the vans. So stopped paying the TV Tax there and then.

It is time I cancelled, I don't watch the stupid thing anyway, I'm on UA-cam almost 24/7, documentary and podcasts. Plus I'm registered blind so I'm due 6 years of a refund for half. I'm sending the required paperwork, getting £450 back, then cancelling. Screw you BBC. 😂

@@rfxtuber Well technically I can see, I'm blind in left eye and got problems with right one, see halos and poor distance vision but you're right, people who are visually impaired shouldn't be paying. I've got the world on my phone and if I really want, plenty of the old classic comedies and children's programmes to watch on dvd. I'm not short of entertainment. The BBC are obsolete and it's time to let them know. I'll declare no licence needed just to see what they do. I know my rights, thanks to channels like this one and I'll save £14 a month, better in my pocket than Gary's.

Agreed. The method of transmission of the 'signal' and connectivity is outdated. This was acceptable many years ago but not today where we have digital connectivity that can be turned on and off at request or for non-payment. What is the licence guy going to say if we tell him to tell the BBC to stop sending an unwanted signal over the top of our home? I tell what he'll say. "That's not possible to do that sir/madam". No, because the BBC are forcing us to fund an outdated transmission system because they're not prepared to bring it into the 21st century as it'll likely bankrupt them🤷♂️

The bar stewards have another company to it that sells merchandise, DVD's, etc., and we have paid for the creating of them.

If you have a TV that is receiving national TV channel broadcasts, which you are watching, then you need to pay a contribution towards the costs of the service. Sound perfectly reasonable to me. It is also the law. Pay or don’t watch these broadcasted channels.

Used to get reminders, after reminder, and each time I would get out an envelope and put the reminder in it, and send it back with Free Post on it, and they actually received it. After this had gone on for some time they gave up as it must be costing them a fortune to pay the postage

The lesson here is NEVER read, or preferably even look at, the legacy press.
Problem with that mindset is that it implies 'new' media is somewhat different and/or superior. The reality is, is that the powers that be are many steps ahead of you. Where previously legacy media performed the task of indoctrination, this task has now fell upon 'new' media but in very different forms. 20 years ago I dealt with one of the first forms chat/comment bots. They were primitive and required careful kneeling. Today, they are almost indistinguishable from human interaction, which is helped by public ignorance of their existence. These bot (bot farms) are controlled by the same organisations funding legacy media (dot gov) and thus pushing identical agendas.

I think the problem is that we in the West enjoyed a long period of relative freedom as a result of which many, if not almost all, have lost the ability to analyse our deluge of ‘information’ sceptically. Eastern Europeans and Russians retain a better ability to discern BS precisely because they were fed so much of it during the commie years and knew how to sniff it out. Discernment is everything and is obviously required even when avoiding the main cesspit - the legacy media.

New media reality is magnitudes wider that the extremely narrow band version of legacy media, today in the palm of our hands we have access to the collective info and knowledge, something unimaginable 3 decades ago.
Of course many (if not most) people still prefer accessing only a tiny band of info and fall victims to bot manipulation and the algorithm that keeps feeding the same content, but it is such a shame to faithfully tune in to legacy media to watch a bunch of carefully curated stories when there is a vast world to explore.

Weird thing is that Ladbible had a Martin Lewis article a week later that was telling people they might well not need a licence despite getting threats.
Had a pro licence commenter recently who said we should all pay and we are evaders... Changed his tune when I asked why he had not paid his membership fees for all the clubs that I pay a fee to.. Just because you don't use a club does not mean you should not pay the fees right? I think he got it in the end? You should not pay for what you do not use. :)

Multi million pound contracts to PR companies recently renewed? Gives that the BBC have a £320m black hole on their budget, all of us as tax payers are bearing the cost for this, regardless if we are licence holders or not.

The reason the BBC have the black hole is not merely because of all the monies paid to PR agencies, but the vast sums paid into employee pension pots - which is eye watering.

Why does the BBC have unlicenced addresses on their data base? As the TV Licence is not an opt-out requirement , they should only need the addresses of those who currently hold a licence on record. Surely there is a data protection issue there?
Ahhh.. no... they get round that by sending mail shots to unlicensed address as the "Occupier" and "resident" every year... As TV license is a forced annual subscription and the "occupier" or "resident" can change on an annual basis. Remember... there is no requirement to either transfer your existing licences to another address, there is no requirement to inform TV license you have moved... Hence unlicensed addresses.....😆 Unlicensed addresses is nothing more than an assumption and presumption.
The best way to deal with them is to send the letter back, addressed Free Post. I did this so often that for the past twelve years have received none. It costs the tv people a lot of monies in postage, to receive post back
It is and probably against GDPR, you can only keep records of customers personal information while there is a legitimate and quantifiable reason. If you are no longer a customer and past the time span you can request they remove any personal details from their records, they have to comply. Would be interesting to see how a solicitor with the relevant knowledge would view that. Maybe someone with some real cash could take it to court and run it as a test case. It depends on if your address is classed as personal information or not I guess?
The no licence addresses are normally sent to 'Legal Occupier'.
But the TV licence is covered by legislation that allows them to proceed as they do.

The TV Licence should be renamed the Live Broadcast Viewing Licence. They should correct this and cancel the BBC as the national broadcaster for failing to produce programmes for population of this country, just minorities.

I've not had a TV in my home for over 12 years and wouldn't have one given. Programmes were bad enough back then and they certainly haven't improved. I'm just at the moment waiting for the barrage of threatening mail from TV licensing to start again as its been nearly 2 years since I get a letter from them saying they would not be in touch again for 2 years, and honestly, I'm seriously considering seeing if I can take them to court for harassment if they do. Its sickening what they seem to think they can get away with, no other company would dare and try what the BBC does.

If 80,000 people per week are declaring that they don't need a TV licence, then, assuming that the current rate continues as it is, which is a big assumption, it'll be about 7 years from now when the last person in the UK to have a TV licence decides that they no longer need one. I've just realised that the UK government should be looking into alternatives for the future much more urgently than they are currently doing.
From official figures, the number of TV licences is 24,372,000 declining at the rate of 10,270 a week. At that rate it over 45 years to reduce to zero.
They cant, as they use the BBC charter to tie their hands on purpose! Hence... Nothing can be done until 2027.... this is called deferring responsibility, 2027 will turn up... Nothing will change..... rinse and repeat....2035 on we go... Any government has a 5 or 3 year term.. BBC charter just gets extended with no way to change it, because of vested interests....

oh and their target audience is also students from oversees, that have just moved in, dont even know where Tesco is but they have already received a threatening letter in their dormitory, personally addressed, with big BOLD LETTERS, which warns them that they WILL be prosecuted unless they pay up. I remember my University issued a campus wide announcement to ignore these letters and that they had issued an early warning to the TV licencing company to stop harassing the students living on campus. And this was my day one experience in the UK. :D

No, what he is saying is that the company which represents the bbc, Capita, is acting like the scammers who rip people off. The way that they phrase their threatening letters and are demanding payment IMMEDIATELY.
Times have changed and people have moved on. Unfortunately the BBC refuses to do the same. They already have commercial businesses making money via BBC Studios etc and have a subscription model via Britbox. Channels like the BBC just dont provide anything worth paying for and haven’t for a very long time. When channels were good and generally when there was just three to watch it had people and entertainers who had learnt their trade in theatres and music halls etc and transferred those skills to the TV environment. Now you have ex footballers, ex pop stars and 15 minute wonders presenting so much, and they have no skills at all in knowing how to engage and entertain. Everyone should have the choice of watching live tv other than the BBC without paying for a licence. Its a ridiculous notion to actually pay a tax for watching a live broadcast, even if that live broadcast of financed and paid for by that broadcaster. Even worse that you can actually go to prison for not paying the tax if you watch live tv but a more serious life changing crime can end up being a slap on the wrist and some community service. Its a crazy country with priorities that are just so wrong.

I said no and went to shut the door but he put his hand on the door and said they will keep coming back until I let them in. I slammed the door shut this time! I told them online 2 years ago I don't need one. I've just done the same again. Do I have to do this every 2 years??

I was stationed in UK back in the 60's, that long ago we of course had to comply with laws of the country which included getting a TV license. To find people who weren't paying, they would drive a truck, Lori, around the neighborhood and could detect your TV signal and cross reference the address to a license list. I'm surprised in today's world a licence on the " Tele" is still being enforced Carry on and cheers to all

I was 17 just got my first ever place on my own,knock at the door,open it and a man says "hi do you have a TV ? I say yes, he says "have you got a licence?" I say no I didn't know about that he says "anything you do say may be taken down and used against you" he didn't try to "work with me" give me advise or even be a bit human,he just cautioned me for an offence and sent me to court where I got a fine which I had to pay weekly as I couldnt afford the whole thing.

I wonder how TV licensing are not guilty of harassment when they send letters that are designed to intimidate people, it might be worth asking our Black Belt Barrister how they avoid being accused of harassment when to many it would appear to be the case.

Never had a TV, Had more than 600 letters, multiple visits, I just tell them to bog off now.
Following your advice if a TV agent knock at my door I’ll ask who is it, then once they say their there concerning not having a tv licence I’ll say no thank you, then close the door on them since I don’t watch any live tv or bbc iplayer or record any tv. The only thing I watch is either old UA-cam films or the odd UA-cam streamer.

We live in the remote mountainous Northern Scottish Highlands. We have no Terrestrial TV signal, no wi-fi and no land line . Capita know we have no way of watching live TV yet they continuously bombard us with letters. It's very frustrating. To make us purchase a TV licence when we can't receive any way of watching the telly is totally fraudulent in my opinion . Shame on the BBC and their sub contractors !
I've had some disgusting letters from them.
My dad passed away a few years ago, and he paid his licence.
When he's passed, I didn't notify the BBC of that fact (because why would I) and when the payment stopped, the threatening letters started.
My dad was old, struggling mentally and was scared of going to prison for not paying the licence.
I'm hoping one day that filth turn up at my door, it's going to be retribution.

I am never going to buy a TV licence until the BBC isn’t the only person who gets my money. Once the other channels get some of my money I will buy a TV licence until then they can get stuff.

They have no legal reason to keep you in their database its not like they have an reason to hold your details.

Royal Mail also hold the details of over 30 million UK postal addresses and is required by law to maintain this and make it available for a reasonable charge. I'm sure you wouldn't want your address removed from that although it might stop a few bills from landing on your doormat.
@@mda5003You can understand the Royal Mail having a list of all UK postal addresses as it is their job to deliver post to every house in the UK but the BBC should not have the same access, if you don’t do business with them. It’s like Companies such as Walkers (of crisps fame) or Citroen etc having access to your details, even though you never do business with them. Why should they have that information?

How do you stop them if it is legal and doesn't go against data protection? It's like parking companies paying the DVLA to obtain your details to issue a charge for parking.

I just fill out the form once every two years to say I don't need the licence, job done. Never had any of the 'boys' turn up only the occational crappy letter. Yeah if the fee were to ever go i won't be shedding tears.
Why waste your time filling out forms? A pointless exercise, and complete waste of time.
You're entering into a contract with them if you do that and giving them personal information. No contact = no contract.

I'm 23 and I've watching your vids recently. I now know that I don't need a TV license when I move out and I'm going to tell all my friends about this too. The BBC is no longer relevant to me - the only good thing they made was top gear keep up the great work!
From what I can gather, the BBC, among other traditional broadcasters, is becoming increasingly irrelevant to people in their teens to thirties.

Phone them up and remove the implied right of entry to cross your boundary. Ask for it in writing. I've got such a letter and it means they can't even knock on the door without trespassing
Over the air TV is free in the US and I still don't watch. I would definitely just laugh if someone tried to make us by a license.

I haven't had a TV license since 2005 because I don't watch broadcast TV. I've been flooded with monthly letters from TV Licencing ever since, even though I told them my reasons for not having a TV licence back in 2005, and told them I would get a license if I ever started watching broadcast TV again.
My Dad, in his late 80's, recently moved out of his house into a residential care flat, and the fkers pounced on him. They wouldn't even give us, his family, a few weeks to sort out all of his bills and affairs, after him having a license at that old property for 60 years. Fk TV licensing. I will never have a TV license again on principle.

T.V License is not for owning a physical TV.. A TV license if for when you watch Live Broadcasts and Iplayer services (Even that is debatable)
