As someone who has been following you on twitter since the game release, I'm really happy with how much you help the community. If offline play comes back some day, I'd love to buy you a slice of pizza in a tournament lol
Your solo zato section alone has expanded my brain significantly with the character. Been having trouble getting the zato train started. Previously I've been forced to just win neutral against my opponent almost 3x more than they need to.
Pad layout you recommend is really close to what I use and I think it's really comfortable. Personally I have dust on l1 because little Eddie used to have dust moves, but in strive that doesn't matter. I'd encourage pad players to give it a try! Your controller won't stop you from executing all sorts of crazy stuff with this character!
Thank you so much for this. So much of what I've been seeing/labbing has finally clicked after I watched this. Im sure I'll be watching this guide many more times haha
Like I cant even express how much better I'm feeling about trying to learn this character after I watched this. I don't feel so lost anymore and I can't wait to get back in the lab!
Fantastic guide, you were incredibly clear in showing your examples then explaining how and why they worked. This video has the exact qualities I’ve been searching for, and now I feel spoiled. You have set the bar high my friend, thank you!
this vid is so OD, im stealing all of that. I HAVE to express my praise for all of this knowledge though, saving me alot of in-game time trying to figure it out on my own ;-;
As someone who is considering to pick up ZATO-1, this is amazing. Good pacing and comprehensive. Maybe some notation regarding the (bread and butter) combo's would've been quality of life, but my lazy ass should just figure it out myself.
So Somethiing I want to point out to you guys is that if you're doing 5d in your sandwich pressure, you can acutally hitconfim into getting frogs OR blockconfirm into gonig back into pierce for another round. It's hard but I did it and it's doable, the secret is to hold down S and P and just instantly like UI GOKU without thinking as soon as you see the yellow flash on the first frame of hitstun release S for frog, and if you don't see that just wait and then release P and you'll go back in for the sandwich
For the sandwich pressure section, I've seen Gobou and other top Zatos do that same string where Eddie gets behind them for a gapless Pierce, but I've seen that they start it with a one hit drill from -K-, Drunkard and then Pierce, and since the drill is active while Eddie is dashing, the first hit of Pierce can be gapless if timed right. I feel like it's a lot safer and less mashable and a good setup worth using/keeping in mind.
I actually did mention that setup in this video. The main reason i dont prioritize that setup is that it does not consistently combo on hit and it can be backdashed on wakeup. Usually, it is better to keep things simple.
@@markkirollos4437 Ah I see. I guess my idea is that people usually block the first part and then you do the high/low/cross up/command grab mixup, but now that you mention it, people sometimes don't block on wake up and comboing off of that can be finicky. Thanks for the heads up!
Awesome guide. I needed such very extensive review of his pressure options. I still have one more question/topic if it comes to Zato gameplan. What I still don't know what are you supposed to do AFTER your pressure ended. Sometimes opponent somehow WILL block all your mixes, or maybe you will just clip him right at the very end of your eddie bar and you can't do that much, and finishing with sword is not always available. Or maybe you even did a wallbreak without a recall or whatever. And then even though you technically succeded, you are left in what is supposed to be adventageus sitiation, but without Eddie bar. What's the plan for the couple of seconds before Eddie is back? I find myself in a lot of situations when I feel like it scored a hit and should have advantage, but since I depleted eddie metter to get that hit it the oki leads nowhere and I'm kinda giving away space for free afterwards.
Yeah, I regret not adding a section on that. You either need to run away and try to keep the opponent off of you or you need to try and use stagger pressure or Drill PRC to delay until Eddie comes back. If you land a knockdown, you can always safe jump the opponent and go for some strike/throw pressure as well. If Eddie dies, but you score a punish, then combo a couple hits into Amorphous for big damage and a knockdown.
Hey mark im a huge fan of this guide and watched it many times now and it really got me better at zato. The only thing I can figure out is how to deal with people jumping during my pressure. If I frame trap with heavy slash the jump dosent come out and they block but if I try any peirce pressure, go for a command grab, or sandwhich set up the jump goes off and everything is messed up and I just get punished. Im not sure what to do to force my opponent to stop jumping every time I got for pressure! Keep up the great work.
That gave me a hard time at first, but now it is second nature. Try to break it down into different chuncks to practice. First press down forward Slash. Then practice tapping down Heavy after that fast enough to get Drill to come out. Then practice pressing down heavy and plinking to down-forward. Make sure you press the heavy with down and not forward or you might get Oppose. Then put it all together. If done correctly, you will do 2S 22H while also moving Eddie forward.
Fantastic guide brother, I've learned alot from it. I've got a random question though, when I play people online, I've noticed that people generally tend to jab between pierce (236P) when they block the first hit. Do you have any tips on how to punish that option when they chose to challenge. Thanks again for the guide dude.
@@andrewthomas2417 Yeah, it's in there. Just as a recap, your easiest option is to whiff Drunkard Shade between Pierce hits to give Eddie i frames, then convert to sandwich pressure. You can also delay Pierce, then plug it with a button. I also later discovered that you can 236P point blank in the corner and plug it with 2P.
Thank you for the reply dude. Yea, I definitely saw the drunkard shade part, but what you said about plugging pierce with 2P, THAT is interesting. I'm definitely gonna lab that out.
Your welcome! I took a bit of a break to focus on my job, but I think I'll do another tournament review of Gobou's Evo Japan run to catch up to the current state of the character.
Geezus this was a crazy guide. Im trying to learn eddie after getting my ass beat by him in a match. Is all of this stuff still applicable (even with all the patches)
Yes, all of this is still applicable, but people found lots of new tech as well. This is enough to pick up the character, though. You can always add more stuff later.
No tips. I personally wouldn't aim to make it mash-proof because the setup can be finicky and there are too many variables to timing it just right. Just treat it as a strike/throw mix up between your opponent acting or blocking.
So Mark, I just finished your sandwich pressure guide and you're saying that you ALWAYS, or at least in the setups you showed, ALWAYS use microdash 5p into -p2-, right?
All of this still works, but there is a lot of stuff that got added to the game that helps Zato. This is a good place to start if you are just picking up the character.
Great vid! 2 hour guide is something I can highly respect
Happy to see you here!
Dude this is a godsend for any new Zato player. I'm 100% hoping we get to see more content from you
Between the stuff you post on Twitter and this guide you have singlehandedly made this character so much more approachable
I've been enjoying the twitter tech, thanks for making a video!

Thanks for this, I’ve been stealing your Twitter tech but this video really glued it all together
This is the definitive zato guide. Thanks man!

This is easily the best guide ive seen in a long time. Thanks helped a lot
Subscribed man really appreciate that this doesn’t just go over beginner stuff for zato
Ooooh man this is what we needed man this channel is going to blow up
Great guide! I really like breaking down eddie positions as stances. helps contextualize your options in each situation.
This is easily the best Zato guide BY FAR!

Best guide for Zato for sure, but I'm having problem doing the string 2S-22HS; I often get the HS release (Oppose). Any tips?
