  • We're diggin' the way these door hinges match the design of the truck. Let's test them out to see if they clear the bottom of the fender then jump into fabricating an inner hood construction that will accept our hinge setup 🔥

You have a 4 foot wide hood, Why have the hinges 6 inches apart? Same on the door hinges. Why so close? The more you space them apart the more stable they will hold something. House doors have a hinge at the top and one at the bottom, not two in the middle. If you pick up a dumbbell with weights on it do you put both hands in the middle. or spread your hands out as far as possible? Just because something is easier or faster does not make it better. Your artistic, and body work skills are excellent, engineering and mechanical not so much. Doesn't make you a bad person. Take a little more time and thought with your weaker skills. Or even talk to someone who knows more than you to help. Life lesson, no matter how sharp you think you are, there are many who will amaze you Henry Ford didn't build either of those cars alone, he got smart help to make his ideas work. The car is still called a Ford.

There are so many similarities between building a car and building a boat. Making patterns for a bulkhead for example. Flagging off is a term used to describe the process of using a spile stick to generate the irregular shape for the pattern. Or scribing is another method using a compass. Or poking a marker through a washer or bearing to maintain an even offset while tracing the surface. You still need to make the initial rough cut of the pattern to get it close enough to the shape but scribing after that would reduce the amount of “trimming to shape”.
You could use a couple of welding triangles and small magnets to keep the bristol board perpendicular to the surface your making the pattern for.
Love the show, the live format (heavy breathing included), and your approach to problem solving. Keep it coming.

This design reminds me of a Disney cartoon from the 1950's, it's a bit Bubbly (if that's a word), kind of a steamboat Willy sort of look. The hood and most of the front fenders remind me of streamlined locomotive also from the 1950's. Very neat so far ... then come the front of the fenders/headlights which seem oddly out of place from the rest of the look. I think they should follow the rest of the 1950's look instead they look to me like a 1960's space ship look. But you're the man!

Later on, so the doors don't open more than they need to and wreck the paint (if, that's a concern, of course) you could use a leather strap, bolted to the inside of the door to limit door swing. My grandpa installed one on his truck which had a door mounted tool box (a farm, mostly, truck). It was mounted such that it was perfectly heighted for working on his farming implements with the truck parked right on it and because the box was easily crumpled, he put a leather strap.

Hi Chad, I think you should probably stand a hinge straight up and measure to see if there will still be enough distance from where you're mounting the hinge on the hood down to the cowl or if the hood will hit on the cowl before the hood can be open as far as you need it to be? I think just to be safe it would be good to know before going much further. I like the way the door hinges are turning out but I've been worried about the shape of the hood hinges and where they are mounted ( below the cowl by some distance) possibly reducing the distance to the cowl when the hood is raised causing it to hit the cowl before it gets to the open position. Not trying to be negative but I'm a retired welder/ fabricator of 35+ years and still do custom fab. as a hobby now. I've got several projects of my own to finish so wishing you the best on yours.
P.S. Many hood hinges depend on a pivoting 4 link design that moves the hood forward as it is raised to maintain the needed clearance at the cowl.

Jolene, You’re doing great at steadily improving the audio and video quality. Go to sites like B&H Audio (and others) that sell sound mixing equipment. There are multiple choices available for small audio mixers that give you 2 or more inputs and have the iPhone lightning connector then they also have a headphone jack to allow you to monitor the sound quality live. You’ll need to do a bit of research for the best device for your needs but they are available. The other day I think the mic gain was just a little too high and with it positioned near Chad’s face you get that breathing noise and I could hear the input level over peak at times when he talked loud. That’s where a mixer will allow you to adjust levels to prevent those issues. Welcome to the world of sound mixing!!! It’s fun but can be frustrating at times but keep up the effort as you are getting better all the time. Today the sound level for both mics seems perfect.

I'm not one for the patreon begging that has infiltrated youtube.
But in all honesty, the fact you not only bring an *actual* apprentice on board but you clearly explain what you are doing and show everything without speeding anything and talking the entire process through makes we want to donate to keep this going.
If you set up a patreon, I would donate. I have learned a lot from watching your very regular updates.

Your creativity at work is sensational. Nice detail solution for the hinge of the door.

The hinges are great...with joints, cutlines, hinges, etc. you either hide them, or celebrate them..this is a mega celebration and I applaud them.
    Bravo❤

Jolene your camera work is spot on..that shot where Aidan was slicing the front of the hood, with BadChad off to the side was cool ass art and science.

The hinges look GREAT. Like Chad said the shape goes with the shape of the truck. And you created from what the door yard provided. The sound today is much better. Truck looks bad ass with hood off. I see an opportunity for a sheet metal decorative engine bay!

I really enjoy watching your videos, the Ford/Merc. combination is very sculptural.
I love it! Keep up the good work.

Hood off alright 👍nice job on the doors hinges look awesome 😎👌🇦🇺
Was thinking where the old door hinge is up top could be used as the rear view mirrors.

Hinges turned out nice! I would have put the top one up where the old hinge was. More distance between reduces strain and means less deflection.

Just like the statue sculpture......Chip away everything that doesn’t resemble a CAB OVER.
At eighty four I’m still learning. Been a gear head & metalsmith as far back as I can remember !
    Great job Chad
Suggestion : have Jolene teach Aden to video. Then Jolene could share in the welding.

Cross brace in the hood and then some decorative and functional gussets, the under side of hood will a piece of art.

The hinge arrangement on the doors calls for exact positioning to be successful and am sure you will do it, great stream as usual, especially Jolene`s camera work, helper Aiden is learning a lot.

Maybe someone else has already suggested it, but I can see two thick chrome/stainless bars that go from the leading edge of each door hinge, along the hood sides, and meet at the front of the hood!

Chad provides young Aiden the space and respect to consider his decisions and actions whilst learning and growing in confidence. A working environment like that teaches more than just the job at hand.

Love this build - I wouldn’t put a grill set up over the nose of this truck . It will look so mean painted up with a solid nose as is. Reminds me of the truck in the movie Jeepers creepers. Don’t ask me why.

l personally would move top hinge .up to the position of the old un used hinge. for looks and function . because to me it will look and function better . l like the hinges that shape so far. A big thumbs up for your progress so far.

I think I remember some earlier videos where the grinder was muted. Those were the best, but I realize that takes a lot of time.
    Great job on the build

Since you didn't put the hinges inside the cab like a Shelby Cobra, I like the sound of an art deco cover over them. Lookin' good!
