- We're about to turn this four door Mercury into a no door Mercury. Once we get the doors in place we can weld them shut then fabricate a panel to connect the front doors on the 1949 Mercury to the 1936 Ford 🔥

Wow! What an awesome build. You're awesome in the way you move metal into art. Love it!
Two things puzzle me about Chad's work practices. First is that he rarely wire brushes the painted surfaces before welding. Second is that he doesn't wire brush or apply any weld through primer on rust before he conceals it behind panels that become inaccessible after welding.

Your best bet is to sit back and enjoy the entertainment. If you are a young man and intend to keep your cars, or have them last, then do everything you can to eliminate every trace of rust, and do everything possible to prevent it from coming back. I have a feeling you already know all this however
That ford door is not going to open, if you cut it where you said you are. The buldge out of the merc pieces and parts you added will bind when you try to open it. the ford hinges just a few inches apart are going to be real flimsy at best, and never line up in the same spot twice. To cut where you want you will be stuck with gull wing doors.
...Actually, if you cut off the '36 hinge and make a similar hinge in that location with the pin angled out a little and put a second hinge on top of the Merc bulge with both hinge pins lined up, your doors would open McLaren butterfly style. Cooooooooooool!!!

@@merckxamillian no as long as air hits it ,it will rust ,rust needs two things to survive air or moisture you got to remember the cars in these museums don’t have no rust on them they are well-maintained unlike what he is doing he’s putting good metal over rust so there for that rusted metal will feast on the good metal eventually when he puts body fill and paint it the rust will come through overtime .
While watching the layout of the door. The green tape is fine for looks the worrisome issue will be the bottom of the door hitting the lower body door as it flairs out. I think the shape will require the lowest part of the door to flair towards the front to allow clearance. Try this cut a piece of cardboard perpendicular to the side profile at the hinge. Then use that silhouette on the front fender. Kind of like when you had the round door and could only place one hinge.

You should turn it into your shop-truck, with a cool short bed and a crane to haul cars, and old hidden toolboxes or tool drawers on the sides where the old doors were, awesome interior and that rust and patina on the outside...

If you do that door it will need to be a suicide door because it won't pass the front fender. Personally I would line up the A pillar and B pillars pf both cars and have the one big door with steps similar to a bus or some transport trucks. I still would do suicide doors because it would be extremely easy to line up the B pillar and get them working.
Always entertaining and I do enjoy. However, Chad you are not getting close to the basic metal working process as you fail to prep the underlaying metal. Grind and weld-thru primer at the very least. These welded joints will turn to sh t in no time - so looking pretty but no functionality. Well, maybe that's the point? Anyway, fun to watch

If I may I would like to share my thoughts on "Flow"...No not your aunty but the source, the sweet spot of your vision that meets your expierience. They say that success happens when oppertunity and expierience meet, but to stay in that "zone" or the "sweet spot" the force pushing that has to be "Flow" otherwise the continuity gets lost and the dream dies. Ok, in saying that and how this may apply in this situation is this...Your "Flow" gets interrupted by meanial things (creative flow is way too precious for this) like...say...tripping over leads, or purely by crouching down to work on the floor (the up and down motion of the serotonin fluid in the brain in itself will cancel flow) these distractions causes momentum blockages and left and right hemisphere confusion = mistakes = wasting time etc...So how do we remedy this? This is where the ancient art of discipline comes into play. To easily transfer your workings to the project and without interrupting the flow it may be better to apply help in the way of discipline to your work surface e.g... Maybe a rolling work bench that houses your hand tools and power sockets just like a painters easel...Leonardo did not have his paints on the floor ;) You are already thinking of dialogue, motion, emotion, and of course the "flow of the art work"...Maybe time to make the tools your servants rather than your masters....Just saying...With a lot of love as you know :)

you can do it , i used chads idea from jims olds floors , on a 50 chevy fleetline floor i am doing , it worked great. i have two 60 chevys myself.

Sometimes I wish they were more open about who they are. Obviously they have decided that’s not a good idea and I’m sure they know what is best. I can’t wait to see what Chad has up his sleeve for the next project. 👍
It sure is refreshing to see progress instead of standing around talking it to death. There are no meetings about it 3 times a day just progress while you explain what you're doing. I'm always glad to see your creations. This would be a great time to put in a diesel Cummins to have something even more unique !

I can't see how the hinges can work so deep into the body🤔 wont the door hit the fender, or wing?

@@tracydoane4261 I didn't dis the guy, I'm saying I can;t see how the ark of the door will clear the fender/wing, even if it does go inside the fender, the door skin will hit the edge, its going to take some fancy hinges to deal with that problem, not just moving the standard hinge up, read my comment again and take your own advise about being nice before jumping in all offended, nothing nasty about my comment!
Chad and Jolene, I love watching your videos. Such great work that you two do together. I am excited to see how the doors end up getting hinged. This seems like it will be an interesting challenge as I have never seen doors that have outward protrusions from the hinge line. Keep up the good work, this is going to be beautiful when it is finished.

I was out of town the last couple of days and came across the season one shows. Yes, this is a complex build, but so was the Noggin Cider build. All of Chad's ideas worked on that build and it turned out beautifully. If he were able to have the crew he had on the Noggin build, we would see this one on the road before the end of summer.

To be honest I would do the round corner door style because of being that high. Like we all know that those pointed doors hurt like a son of a gun lol. And to me the way you had it yesterday and today I really like because it looks like it belongs. Keep up the work you too!

Love the work. Great insight to the process from design to the finished product. Your good at eyeing things, I am too BUT, I learned that just a few seconds more to check with a tape measure saves me a lot of time. Just saying Chad.
I keep thinking about the head/tail lights on this truck. Since it’s now a COE I like the taillights on your galaxy, I think those or the lights on a early 50’s crestline would look great. Keeping with the round frenched look for the headlights like the rendering you’ve been using. Keeping the head/taillights symmetrical. Almost like a turbine engine intake/exhaust. Thanks for all the info, I am learning so much.
I thought it started out as a COE, but its not anymore. Sadly, It's now conventional with a full length hood.

I am curious as to what you are going to use to fill in all the big empty gaps under where you put the new skins? and what exactly will be under the ford in the seating area of the mercury

Chad, I love your vision, I love your skill, I love the way you do your videos. Not such a fan of the scab panels with metal left underneath. In some areas I can see it for strength, but not everywhere. Anyway, still love your channel.
Hey Chad, How come you do not clean the old merc panel before you overlap and weld new metal on top. There will always be rusty metal under to come back later on to haunt you.

Just an idea, why dont you build yourself a couple of work benches , waist high on wheels for all your tools etc. you are using on the build. Keeps the floor clear and stops you keep bending down to pick them up from the floor...Just an idea..............keep up the great work.

I would love it sometime you could video from inside the welding helmet while Chad is welding so we can see what it looks like through the welder's mask what Chad sees just for one time I've never used a welding helmet. What a great job videotaping it's like you're right there and you move so gracefully

I am lovjng your creativity and truck build. One thing about the doors is that by using the stock top hinge alignment you will need to scallop out the front edge to clear the roll of the front guards. Also I think the truck would make a great 5th wheel car or camper hauler. Keep up the good work mate. Cheers 👣

Me too. The front bottom corner of the door will clash with the guard when the door hinges open. Significant remodelling required to eliminate clash.

Wonder if you could make the bottom door line, line up with the Merc's body line. Think you already are looking at that idea. That grille idea will sure set this off. Had to look up that truck. To bad new cars don't look like that, so much aerodynamics built into it.

When folks are talking about the rust they don't realize that these old cars were made of very thick metal also a better quality metal. plus chad is welding eighteen gauge metal on the car. Which is very thick compared to cars that come out of the car manufactures today. Also whether you understand it or not, when metal gets a thin coat of rust on it, its actually protects it. Its the salt and the dampness that causes cars to rot out, not surface rust.

Consider hinging the Merc door skin downward to form an aircraft type stairway to reach the outward swinging top door with consistent vertical gaps. Looks like a solution to get in and out of the truck easily. You wouldn't have to attach the curved area of the bottom door to the top door. After you grind the high weld spots. Use an adjustable vixen vile to finish the curved surfaces.
I like that idea. I would split it and have the top half gull wing and the bottom half be stops that fold down
Jumping way ahead, a ford 429/460 might be an interesting choice. (I would assume there is vast real estate under the hood.) Older style dress up kits are available to make it look 60ish. It should be easy to find a rusted T-bird or truck donor for engine/trans/rear end.

A buddy sandblasted his truck, sand caught in every joint, and after it was painted, the sand started working its way out and rust started forming. The 1952 metal was pristine before blasting.
