    Chad, as a Mechanical Engineer with over 40 yrs experience, I would suggest trying to install the lower hinge on the lower new part of the door, and then modify the top hinge to have it's hinge pin in perfect alignment with the lower hinge pin. Like having one steel rod being the hinge pin for both top and bottom hinges. The door will have no choice but to open and close then - and clear the lower body jam.

      Bill is correct! Simply mount the lower hinge then lengthen the upper hinge so it comes out from the body the same distance as the lowe hinge does . Depending on how far out your extension is you will have to extend it several inches. As he suggests use a long steel rod to use to keep the two pins in line.

    The hinges close to the centre line of the hood would be fine, just fit a gas strut to either side of the hood to help lift the weight and stabilise the outer edges. ‘ If you know what I’m trying to say’

      @douglasnicholls1366 3 роки тому

      I have the same concern about twisting force on the long heavy hood, but if he's using an electric opener the system will be a tripod so there's less twisting force. Wider would be more stable considering wind, but there aren't a lot of options. I think the biggest concern is warping the area where the hinges attach to the hood.

  • @nigelsnell9770
    @nigelsnell9770 3 роки тому

    If you move the hinge line forward to just behind the hood gap, the door will swing clear and the door will move outwards away from the body, allowing the door to open further.
    This could be built as one single large hinge, or two separate ones.
    Like a production car, leave a large hole for the bolts to adjust door fit, and to take up any door droop due to sag or wear on the hinge pin.
    That way, it will be real easy to adjust with the hood up.
    To reduce the likelihood of the hood flip flopping due to the hinges being close together, you can box the two hinge arms together, which will make it more rigid.
    Nice work Chad, looking forward to the next installment.

  • @garygallagher7557

    To aquire the swing distance to clear the doors protruding bottom, the hinge point needs to move further away from the original cabs A pillar. Chad may tilt the hinge pins axis so the door when open swings out further at the bottom.

    I drew the contour of the door in CAD and tried a few hinge configurations and found one possible solution is to set the hinge pin angle at an angle that catches the outside curved edge of the door at the bottom and tilts inward toward the top to catch the outside edge just before the door opening curves back...about where the current upper hinge is now.
    With both hinge pins set at this same angle, the door will lift slightly as it opens and will clear the body. Probably will be good to use some nitrogen gas charged cylinder springs to hold the doors open since they will tend to close heavy with the downward assistance of their weight

    Would it make the hood more sturdy if you trimmed off some of the outer part of the hinge? That would allow the actual hinge points to each move an inch or more outboard. Around here, the wind would try to twist the hood off if it was opened up. The further apart the hinges are the stronger the connection. I really like your thoughts on the door hinges. When you move the pivot point forward it will gap the door opening more. Also if you push the pivot point out away from the door it will also increase the gap. Even a quarter inch out will help. Good work! I like that you encourage us all to get working too!

    I have a hinge idea. Two steel posts, with a hinge on one side. Short / flat side attaches to door jam. Long side (the post) goes inside the door by about two inches…maybe even just an inch…have to not interfere with the window. When you open the door, it slides down the post just enough to clear the body and opens all the way on the hinge. When you close the door, it slides back in all the way and closes. The entire thing is invisible from outside the vehicle.

    Use Original door hinge. Mount at the bottom of the flat just before bottom of door where it flares out. You will probably need to make the bottom front of door over with it making a C shape so as to make the door swing away from fender when opening. Where as door swings into the fender now. Think replicating the same style opening at bottom front of door as the curve of the wheel opening of the fender for the tire. And again ditch the head lights and go to the 39-40 ford style so the lay down at the same angle as the hood lays back for a more stream lined look so the hood and lights aren’t fighting each other. Really Great work folks!!!!

    Simpler, as others suggest, would be to cut back the skirt at the front of the door so it misses the bodywork and reshape the door aperture. Comment from UK.

    There are several easy solutions to your doors. Simply grab a broom stick and place one end of it on the door slightly above the original top hinge. Then lean the other end of it down on an angle onto the bottom front edge of the door. The centreline of the broomstick is the centreline along which both hinge pins must lie. The two places that the broomstick touches the door are the two places that the hinges should be mounted.
    A mixture of other simple (and some more elaborate) solutions can be seen on many LeMans cars of the late 90s and early 2000s.

    On the door hinge, you might want to take a few minutes and watch the July 24th post by ColdWarMotors. He re-hinged a Model T door, and the challenges aren't as complicated as yours but he does a good job of explaining the alignment problems. Also, he started with a nice-looking and very beefy brass hinge (he later hacked it up) that might work for you. I'm thinking weld it flat in the pivot location you figured out. Anyway, it's just a few minutes but I thought it might help.

    You still need a step to get into the cab- that will require cutting a hole in the body to step up to the opening. However if you hinge the door at the bottom edge it will open down and become your step.

  • @PhoebeBouley2212
    @PhoebeBouley2212 3 роки тому

    Way I see it you have several good opportunities to resolve your issue.
    1. Relocate the pivot point and have protruding hinges. As you seem to be doing.
    2. Trim the leading bottom edge of the door back to match the radius of the body panel.
    3. Redesign your door to stop at the body line and use factory top hinge. Which if you did this would allow you to make a fold down step with the lower panel.
    Which would look better with a gulwing door.

    Put the hinge vou just cut off on the car with the pin on the door and not the cowl. Have the top of the pin lean to the back of the car to make the door tilt up. Now when you open it the door will go back and up at the same time. If you mount the hing on a 1 inch block so the pin is further out from the car the door it will go back up and out at the same time. It should give you 90 degree opening. The further out or back will give more clearance. I'm a custom furniture, cabinet maker and have the same hinge dilemmas. I work wood , not metal like you, but the principal is the same. Except I usually have more interior space to hide a two pin hinge or whatever I have to make to swing all kinds of shapes. Look at the original hinges off those merc doors, with the bulge of the door between the two hinges the door has to go back then out not to bind. That is only a one or two inch bulge. You are dealing with 6-8 inch bulge at the bottom of your doors. The slash cut you drew once going from the flat part of the ford door and angled down to the rear 50-60 degrees would have worked with the original ford hinges. Getting your legs in the cab would have been tough though. Keep picking at it you'll get it. But please try what I said. As you say learn if it works or not ?. .

    There are two options for the door hinges. You can offset the to the right as you have already tried. However the amount of offset must exceed the amount by which the fender bulges to the lower edge of the new metal. Alternatively you can keep the hinges at the door gap, put the lower hinge at the lower edge of the new metal, and incline both hinges so that the pivot pins line up in a straight line.

    You are on the right track with the door hinge. Move the pivot points about 2 inches forward from the original location. 1 to 2 inches away from the door skin, move the top hinge higher and the bottom hinge as low as possible before it curves outward. It should work like a charm.

    Chad, another great video showing your thought process when faced with a problem.
    The bonus is that Aiden gets to experience this and see there are always multiple solutions which come with their own challenges.
    Jolene thanks for the great camera work.

    Just a little idea for Chad what if your make the hinge on the the upper a pillar then I would make the door swing up on an angle which would miss the fender I don't know just a thought love the Channel long long time watcher hats off to Chad and Jolene keep up the good show

    Engineering fixes for things makes it interesting! Those temporary hinges you welded on looked like tail gate hinges. They weld to the bed post and the plastic sleeve fits in the bottom roll of the tailgate.

    Hi Chad, you must move the pivot point of the hinges to the inside of the cabin. Maybe in the middle of the door.
    And create space under the fenders so that the door can swing under the fenders. Like in modern cars.

    The bottom corner of the door needs to curve inward so when the door is open it will clear the way the fender protrudes outward. Love the build!

    The point of suggesting the suicide door mount was the much wider distance between the hinges. The door is heavy and might tend to sag in Service with the very narrow distance between hinges as it stands. I'd make that bottom hinge pin in double shear in any case.
    Enjoying the show. Never miss a premier!

    I think you should try a flip front end. hinge it in the front somewhere and have the whole front end flip up. It would be easy to access the engine that way also. Great job looking forward to seeing it finished.

    Most TVR models had a similar ,although the hinges are internal the body work ahead of the doors is shaped to accomodate the door when it opens. I think the built up external hinges you mentioned would work and look good.

    I think if you'd heat and bend/twist the "top" of the existing hinge slightly towards the front of the truck you might be rewarded with the correct angle to clear the bottom. Once that is established you can determine a similar configuration for the bottom hinge... just a thought.
