Italy's rail system is to be admired. I spent a good deal of time on high speed trains in Italy. But didn't get enough time to go to the alps, Sicily, and Trieste. Wish they offered a month of paid vacation in the US. I only get 15 days (including sick time), and that just wasn't enough to see all Italy has to offer. Plan to go back another time.

Centovalli is the name of the valley (the Swiss part)
Valle Vigezzo is the name of the valley (the Italian part)
Centovallina is the informal name of the line (in Switzerland)
Vigezzina is the informal name of the line (in Italy).

The route in Italy, belonging to the SSIF, is called Ferrovia Vigezzina, from the name of the valley (Val Vigezzo). Centovalli, on the other hand, is the name of the valley in Swiss territory. For some years Centovalli has also been a municipality. The territory of the municipality coincides with that of the valley of the same name, which begins in the hamlet of Intragna and ends near the Italian-Swiss border of Camedo. From here, in Italian territory, the Val Vigezzo begins, which continues up to Domodossola. It constitutes the eastern part of a valley system transversal to the main Ticino and Toce valleys; it is crossed by the Melezza stream, which flows into the Maggia river just beyond Ponte Brolla.

  • @zudochimiriarikatomidotaki8188

I came to search this video because we took this train yesterday afternoon from Locarno to Domodossola and I got interested to know better regarding the route and the Centovalli express. We saw these amazing views and I managed to get few pictures and videos of the villages and rivers along the way.

The station (shunting rod), located under the Domodossola railway station, actually belongs to the SSIF (Subalpine Society of Railway Companies), which also operated the legendary Spoleto - Norcia railway. The route belonging to the FART (Ticino regional railways and bus lines) begins from Camedo Transito, a fare connection point coinciding with the Italian stop called Ribellasca, located near the bridge of the same name. The real distance of 54 km that runs between Domodossola and Locarno, in international traffic is considered to be 149 km for tariff purposes, with the increase almost entirely concentrated between Camedo Transito and Camedo. Unless you have a valid Pass from Switzerland to Switzerland via Sempione, Domodossola, Camedo Transito (via Centovalli), in many cases (1/2 Price Season Ticket for example), it is better to buy an SSIF ticket from Domodossola to Ribellasca, get off and reach Camedo on foot, where you can purchase a FART ticket at the Arcobaleno rate

For a few years now, even along the Italian route (SSIF) the main signals have been Swiss. Only the level crossing protection signs are of the type imposed by the Ministry of Transport (formerly USTIF*, a unit belonging to the former General Directorate of the M.C.T.C., Civil Motorization and Concession Transport).
*USTIF stands for "Special Office for Fixed Plant Transport"

    • @Luigi-uj5ml
      @Luigi-uj5ml 3 місяці тому

@@user-cd9rd7jb2z The cheapest tickets are those of the SSIF for the route in Italian territory from Domodossola to Ribellasca. FART tickets for the internal Swiss route from Locarno to Camedo are more expensive but never as expensive as tickets that include the border route Camedo - Camedo Transito. Unless you have a Eurail Pass or an Interrail Pass, the route from Locarno to Domodossola towards Valais will be taxed according to FFS rates considering the route as if it were 149 km instead of the actual 53 km

With reference to the comment visible at minute 5:10, perhaps few travelers know that in traffic from Switzerland to Italy or from Switzerland to Switzerland via Italy (fare connection point: Camedo Transito), the actual 53 km that separate Locarno from Domodossola are considered 149 km, moreover taxed based on the prices of the Swiss federal railways, also for what concerns the route in Italian territory managed by the SSIF. In some cases it is much more convenient to purchase an SSIF ticket from Domodossola to Ribellasca, continue on foot to Camedo and there purchase a ticket to Locarno at the integrated Arcobaleno rate 🌈. If you get off at a hotel in the Canton of Ticino you get a free ticket for the Ticino railway network valid up to Camedo station.

If you like scenic mountain railways check the Sulmona-Carpinone line in central Italy, also known as Ferrovia dei Parchi and Transiberiana d'Italia, i.e. Parks' railway because it goes through at least two national parks and Italy's Trans-Siberian because of the snowy atmosphere during winter. In fact it sports the second highest railway station in Italy at 1268 meters above sea level, the highest being Brenner at 1371. Normal traffic was suspended back in 2011, the State Railways Foundation (Fondazione FS) runs almost-regular heritage trains with coaches from the 1930s and 1950s :)

Secondly, the Swiss Travel Pass is not only valid on the whole of the Centovalli line, but is also valid on the connecting main line from Brig to Domodossola.

@@NonstopEurotrip But the real doosy is: "I would like a water please." They bring you a glass of "spring water" that costs 5 francs. (Not a bottle of Pellegrino-that costs 9 francs). You have to specify "TAP WATER" please for a free water. Its a total racket that rich people just pay for, and most are oblivious to.

The problem with this line is that due to its time length it's not a viable option for local people.

I remember doing the same trip back in 2015 (a day excursion from Milan) and enjoying it so so so much. It was early April and the train was almost empty so I could just walk freely from one side to the other of the carriages. I recall the stone viaduct on the Italo-Swiss boundary which was gorgeous and the lots of tiny little stations dotted along the way. In those days I remember paying, had to check my records, for 2 adults and 2 children 74 EUR return same day tickets.
Here's a short video from that trip: ua-cam.com/video/SCCjB018yYU/v-deo.html
Did you manage while staying in Locarno to take the funicular to the convent perched on top of the hill? that's a nice one also

    Brutte riprese, invece
di far vedere il percorso da Masera a Trontano, che è bellissimo in mezzo ai boschi, e che comprende l'antica torre di Fra Dolcino, riprende i sedili e l'interno del treno. Spiacente, ma non mi piace.

Suggestion for a spectacular scenic Swiss train ride you might not have on your radar yet:
From Yverdon to St. Croix, particularly in late autumn and winter, when the train actually takes you out of the fog and presents a panoramic view of the Alps from the Central Swiss alps to the Mont Blanc, with a sea of fog in between. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yverdon%E2%80%93Ste-Croix_railway
