Roma Termini is a station I have spent a little time in. Of course never in lounges and things! Could only ever travel on the shortest of shoestrings 😊. But I do like the crowds and buzz in airports and train stations - reminds me that I am privileged to at least be traveling at all!!! 👍
12:12 the reason why the Rome-Florence HSL (also called "Direttissima") is in 3kV DC, is because it was completed before it was finalized that the EU standard for HSL was 25kV AC - and also because it's often used by local and classic intercity trains, who use the Italian standard of 3kV DC. In this way it's more similar to the German and Austrian high speed lines, rather than the French ones. The works you mentioned consist in upgrading the signalling of the line to ETCS2. 14:08 that's not totally correct, there are works to build a HSL underpass to make high speed trains avoid using classic lines. But it's been stuck for years. Probably it will be completed by 2026/2027, but I'm not too sure either.
Yes, back in 1977 no one even thought about introducing 25kV to Italy where entire network was on 3kV. And initially the plans for Direttissima were even more modest, planning it for the speeds up to 180 km/h, but later it changed. And yes, Florence is a bottleneck for HS trains. They can use Campo di Marte station to avoid reversing, but it's quite unpopular because it's a little bit too far from the centre. However, digging beneath Florence isn't easy since the ground is archeologically highly sensitive. What's in my opinion a problem with HS trains in Italy is the fact that they loose much time (and accumulate delays) exiting and entering the stations in bigger cities, crawling at pedestrian speed for kilometers before being allowed to accelerate. Years ago there was a joke: it takes a HS train about 1 and half hour to get from Florence to Rome: 1 hour to get to Settebagni (where the HS line ends) and half an hour to Roma Termini (just a few km away). And it wasn't far away from the truth.
The whole HS underpass project has been recently restarted. It will consist of a 8-km tunnel beneath the current tracks, with an operating speed of 100 kph. A new underground passthrough station, Firenze Belfiore, will service high speed trains, very much like the HS Bologna station. The project is scheduled to be put into full service by the end of 2028.
@@maxart3392 There are plans for new passthrough stations at Florence, Rome and Naples, similar to the station in Bologna. When these are eventually built they could potentially shave alot of time off the Milan - Salerno route.
Took Freccia Rossa in 2018 business class and it was awesome. Lots of room and super smooth, you could hold your drink while walking in the aisle and not spill it. Wi-fi and comps very good. Planning to do it again this year. BTW great vid little noise and subs are great. Cheers
I travelled from Rome to Milan in the same train in May 2015. I had boarded this train from Roma Tirbutina station and not Roma Termini. Fond memories! 😇
I went on this exact same route in 2004, but my train. if I remember well, was red, green, and silver. It looked just like tho ones appearing in your video, but I remember the trip taking about 5 hours, stopping in Bologna and Firenze. I had traveled by air from Valencia, Spain, and the flight arrived past 11 PM, so I found what I thought was the only restaurant open in Milan and spent the night at the restaurant, when I ate the most amazing gnochi of my entire life. My train left at 5 AM, so I slept the entire trip, arriving in Rome around 10 AM. On the way back I was wide awake and enjoyed the views as well as a delicious meal (included in the price of the fare). I always rather take trains than flying because I enjoy more and have freedom to walk around.
I used Vande Bharat Train in My India.....which is pride of us and i lovd it over ur train............. And my Route frm Delhi to Katra{J&K} is also full of Nature......
I love competition. If you are travelling on the same route in similar carriages - the only difference has to be the quality of seats and service. Clearly here we have a very good quality and a fair price. Other suppliers should be taking note and acting appropriately! (I'll let you find the typo yourself this week - I'm beginning to think you put one in on purpose to see if I'm paying attention!) You are still the best.
Haha thanks, glad you enjoyed it Jon, and yes I completely agree about the competition! Oh go on tell me the mistake, I don't do it on purpose, it's much worse before Dylan and Superalbs both proof check the videos 😂
I noticed when I'm in Italy that the rails are painted white on their sides. I did a little research as it's to keep the rails from overheating in the sun since they're welded and can't expand at normal joints. It seems to reduce rail temps by -7C.
Great video as always 😁 and loved the fact that train operators are providing business class experience with lots of features similar to those that are provided on airlines and loved to see more and more people are using trains over airplanes and wasn’t expecting that the TV screen was tucked away in one of the armrests… and complimentary drinks and snacks are always welcomed they do add a nice touch to person’s overall experience and in my opinion, I prefer both the trains Italo AVG and Frecciarossa 1000 they are magnificent but when it comes to livery I would prefer Italo AVG.
They're both excellent trains! I will do Frecciarossa executive when I get the chance to compare them, but yes it's a very lovely way to travel, I really enjoyed it! Glad you liked it mate ☺️🙏🏻
A lot of high speed trains in Italy are very modern & compact & some often offer business class as I know from previous reviews experience the food is very good.
If you need to travel between Milan and Rome, the fast train is WAY faster than flying. You go from city centre to city centre, 3 hours in total, no long queues for security checks or trips to the airport. Italo and, less often, Frecciarossa, have sometimes deals if you book in advance. Edit: I especially like about Italo that there is always personnel at the doors to check passengers' reservations. So you don't get strange people sneaking in.
@@radovan107 right. From Linate you can just take an ATM bus (= city transportation) and be in the centre in less than half an hour. It's all the before and after the flight that takes away a lot of time compared to train travel.
Superb video; I have not yet been on Italo; my next trip to Italia will include prima classe on Frecciarossa, from Milano to Ancona (my family name is Breccia, so I might say Brecciarossa!). Thanks for your excellent reports. Ciao! Ciao!
Wonderful train and journey, yes I did travel from Milan Central to the Downtown area to see the local attractions when I had a 12 hour lay over at the Milan Airport, had to take couple of local trains from Airport to Milan Central
8:24 a bit of nitpicking, the wine is "Prosecco" (small typo there)😁 Hahaha, apart from that, always tremendous videos, Max. Italo is a terrific competitor to Trenitalia and I think the AGV is quite a powerful beast, I love that it speeds up to 320 km/h on regular service. Hard to choose among them, honestly. I truly enjoy both🤩 Keep coming those good videos! Cheers
Italo's trains were designed and built at the Alstom production site in Savigliano, in the province of Cuneo ITALY , a center of excellence in the production of high-speed trains and an excellent example of a state-of-the-art factory that has been able to renew itself over time. In addition to Savigliano, the other Alstom sites involved in the production of the Pendolino Italo are that of Sesto San Giovanni in the Milanese area, that of Bologna and the depot of Nola, in the province of Naples. Ordinary and extraordinary maintenance will also be carried out on these new vehicles in Nola for the next thirty years. The French bought the company that built all types of ITALO trains from Fiat FERROVIARIA (historic Italian train production center, here they invented the PENDOLINO trains).
@@alessandropompa Italian trains are NOT known for their quality in Europe and the world lol..... In Denmark we have had to scrap most of the trains we bought from Italy, because of the poor quality, and now they already bought new trains, starting from 2024, from France this time lol. Even though the last train delivered from Italy was in 2013, so they've only lasted 11 years.... and with a lot of problems and repairs. Buying Italian trains almost bankrupted our the national train operator /company, DSB. And we're far from the only country that have had problems with italian trains
Thank you for a great review ! I think the Italo AGV is truly superb, and must ride in one soon. The onboard service looked good, but surprised there is not a full dining car within the unit.
Full dining car are not meaningful on a 3 hours trip but of course are there on night trains or non highspeed ones. There is a recent and beautiful night train from Rome to Wien and Munich where you depart at late evening from Rome and you wake up in Wien or Munich in a modern super luxury train. There are many options from cheap ones on standard seats to top notch private room with a private bathroom and shower!
The italian high speed rail network allows a maximum speed of 300 km/h ( Milan to Florence section , Rome to Naples section , Milan to Turin section , Milan to Brescia section . This in 2024 ) . Trains are technically capable to reach 360 km/h , but technical issues related to the infrastructure don' t permit commercial service with this parameter . In a brief future , new sections of high speed network will be opened ( Brescia to Verona and then Venice , Naples to Bari , Milan to Genova ) .Welcome to Italy enjoy your trip and don' t forget to travel on secondary railways ( less famous but immerged in marvelous landscapes , like Siena Asciano Monte Antico railway , Porretta Terme to Pistoia railway , Circumetnea railway , Transiberiana d'italia railway , Pustertalbahn , Trento Mezzana and many many others )
When I travel between Milano/Firenze/Roma I reserve on Frecciarossa Executive Class. I ❤️ the soft plush yellow leather seats. Also the tasty at your seat meal service … granted haven’t been on it because of Covid but have plans to do so this summer. I think it’s waaay better than Italo. Did use Italo once just to compare and went right back to reserving only Frecciarossa Executive Class. 😉👍🏻
In 2016, took Trenitalia train except we went to Florence and Pisa and back to Rome. Cost us 356 euros for family of four. Looking forward to 2023 when plan is to go train riding from Milan to Venice.
We took one of these between Bologna and Florence. I was hoping to see a bit of Italian countryside on my first day but quickly noticed the journey was mostly through a tunnel.
Went from Rome to Florence on Italo in Prima. It was good. Still not sure whether I preferred the new Frecciarossa over it, but I'd say they're comparable.
Termini mega station has been buit between 1939 eastern and western building by Angiolo Mazzini and from 1947 to 1950 for central building with the “pensilina”
The steam loco stationed at Milan Centrale is a FS Gruppo 640, the second fastest steam locomotive class in Italy (fastest ones being the 685s at 120 km/h cruise speed); the one in Centrale is obviously for exposition only, but there a few still in working condition pulling the occasional steam powered historical train around Italy. Not as many or as well advertised as the UK's, but nice to check if someone's interested.
fun fact ... this train could go faster, but... we have to update the tracks for that LOL - I noticed there is a project ready to entirely re-do the Rome-Florence tracks for such a fast train. I think it could run at 330 or 340 Km/h - I can't wait
I have travelled on Italo a few times. The first time was back in 2012 when it was still avoiding Roma Termini but was departing from Roma Ostiense (then discontinued). But I've also used it between Bologna, Milan, and Turin a few times, only being delayed once due to an SCMT fault in Florence. By the way, the only high speed trains that call at Bologna Centrale but do not stop at the High Speed station are the Frecciarossa, Italo, and Frecciargento trains to Ancona, Pescara, Bari, and Lecce
I plan to take northen half of this route in other direction this year on vacation. I will be taking Freciarossa though, as using Interrail Italo simply isn't on the table.
@@NonstopEurotrip well, TBH Frecciarossa is higher on my bucket list than Italo anyway so it isn't that much of an inconvinience. But choice would be nice.

They're excellent 🙂 If you went on a highspeed train you definitely went through lots of tunnels unless it was a long time ago!
Italo never fails to please me, greetings from Italy
Me too 😊
Hello Italy 🇮🇹 😍!! My No.1 favourite countries are Italy 🇮🇹 & Wales 🏴 !! Hugs from L.A. ( Los Angeles ) ,I'm Japanese. 👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞
I really love Italo. I've tried Frecciarossa trains in the past, but they are much more expensive compared to Italo. And even in the lowest class, it's very comfortable! And they usually make special offers and discounts, especially if you're young!
Yes, they have some great deals. The business/prima classes are basically the same, but I prefer Italo as it's normally cheaper! 👌🏻
Yes, I had realized Italo was much more affordable !! 👍👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞
I took the Italo from Venice to Florence, it was an awesome experience traveling at 250 kmph in the tunnels. The WiFi throughout the route was infallible, at 50 Mbps I wasn't complaining 😀
Amazing!
Love going in these trains. I'm always so glad when I can!
Same here!
I was in Rome in 2011 and I took a tour of Capri on Bus, however I had tickets for Italian open tennis. I choose to miss day sessions to go to Naples and Capri, however I wanted to see the evening session. Although I was booked on bus tour I took train back to Rome because it was much quicker and had me making it back to Rome to watch tennis in the evening session.
Great video once again Nonstop!! I can't wait to ride the Italian rails this summer
Me too 🇮🇹😎
Fantastic ride.! great train and accommodations. I will never see that happen here in the USA in my lifetime. But I do remember the service before the interstate and planes pushed trains to the background. and freight etc. sad. but true. Thanks for sharing ECF

5:20- I wish that this was here in Canada travelling on The Corridor between Windsor, Ontario and Quebec City, Quebec.
Would be pretty amazing right 👍🏻
@@NonstopEurotrip, it would indeed.
We are supposed to be getting that within the next few years (I’m in London Ontario)
Roma Termini is a station I have spent a little time in. Of course never in lounges and things! Could only ever travel on the shortest of shoestrings 😊. But I do like the crowds and buzz in airports and train stations - reminds me that I am privileged to at least be traveling at all!!! 👍
Exactly, making of the most of travelling when you can is always my mantra too 👌🏻
I really appreciate the cleanliness of Italo trains, you can see the cleaning crew standing by to board the train at 21:20, quick turnaround time!
Very fine ride indeed... love the entire experience. Thanks!
You're very welcome 🙏🏻
It's not an easy problem to fix though is it 🤷🏻♂️🇮🇹
The cost of being railway pioneers! We Brits know all about that 😅
The whole HS underpass project has been recently restarted.
The entertainment system makes the difference, and speed of course. Thanks for the experience.
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Seems like a very quiet train (at least until it hit supersonic speeds!) with an enviably smooth ride.
Beautiful trains 😻
Took Freccia Rossa in 2018 business class and it was awesome. Lots of room and super smooth, you could hold your drink while walking in the aisle and not spill it. Wi-fi and comps very good. Planning to do it again this year. BTW great vid little noise and subs are great. Cheers
So cool! Italy knows how to do fast trains well 😃
I travelled from Rome to Milan in the same train in May 2015.
Yes, the original 'Eurostar' service in Italy. Most of those trains still run as Frecciarossa 500s... 👍🏻
Great film 👍and beautiful scenery 😍
I like the train inside.
Pretty nice isn't it 😌
I used Vande Bharat Train in My India.....which is pride of us and i lovd it over ur train.............
And my Route frm Delhi to Katra{J&K} is also full of Nature......
Thanks for the ride on an excellent train service ! 👍😁🇦🇺
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
@@NonstopEurotrip 18.14 - and I didn't even mention your keenness for a lay flat seat in the private compartments! Naughty boy!!
I noticed when I'm in Italy that the rails are painted white on their sides. I did a little research as it's to keep the rails from overheating in the sun since they're welded and can't expand at normal joints. It seems to reduce rail temps by -7C.
Indeed yes!
I was wondering why they were white
Beautiful ❤ the front nose looks like the front of the Ferrari Enzo. And in red paint too! Lovely Italian countryside views thank you.
The guy that started Italo Company has been the DA of Ferrari for many years...
It is beautiful, yes! 🥰
@@NonstopEurotrip can’t wait to watch that trip report in the future!!! 😀
A lot of high speed trains in Italy are very modern & compact & some often offer business class as I know from previous reviews experience the food is very good.
1st class train is nowhere near 1st class long haul on Emirates, Qatar etc .... nor are the the prices fortunately.
@@karroketo that's because first class on big airplanes is designed for flights that last 10 to 20 hours, while these train journeys take far less.
Absolutely 🤗
Well Milan Linate Airport is very close to the center, it's a marvellous city airport, what is far is Rome Fiumicino Airport
Ciao! Ciao!
You're welcome Alberto 🇮🇹🤩
Chiaramente è un cognome italiano
Done this exact route in Italo Prima. Would happily do it again and again and again!
Great isn't it ☺️
Wonderful train and journey, yes I did travel from Milan Central to the Downtown area to see the local attractions when I had a 12 hour lay over at the Milan Airport, had to take couple of local trains from Airport to Milan Central
It's great fun 😁
Thanks for sharing! Wonderful vid!
Will see italy for the first time next month!
Hope you enjoy it!
I truly enjoy both🤩
Keep coming those good videos! Cheers
It only travels at 300kmh right now, but it's it very cool and comfortable to ride 😍🇮🇹
Best way to get around Italy indeed 🎉 so much fun!
It really is!
Let's just say Italian trains aren't exactly known for their build quality 🙄
@@NonstopEurotrip how can you say that? Please don't share misinformation!
@@NonstopEurotrip Like British cars? 🤣

Thank you for this marvellous Eurotrip...!!!
Our pleasure!
Was on the Milan to Rome run a couple of weeks ago, it is fast and smooth.
I love it. We took this train from Rome to Firenze.
Thank you for a great review ! I think the Italo AGV is truly superb, and must ride in one soon. The onboard service looked good, but surprised there is not a full dining car within the unit.
Yeah, but compromises eh. Would be nice is full meals were served but it's not too long a trip, since can be though! 😀🇮🇹
I was on this train in 2018..i can say the best train in europe
Bella Italia, viva l'Italia🇮🇹🍷🌹

Wow, you had a nice travel in a great Italo train. Never been on Italo, but I have been with Frecciarossa 1000 which is also a great train.

@18:11. I can't believe that a train can go 342 miles per hour. Amazing.
Km per hour.
@@fabriziocoppola6519 Yes. I made a mistake.
Yeah I agree Rob, I will do a full Frecciarossa executive review soon ☺️🇮🇹
In 2016, took Trenitalia train except we went to Florence and Pisa and back to Rome. Cost us 356 euros for family of four. Looking forward to 2023 when plan is to go train riding from Milan to Venice.
In Romania our trains take 4 to 6 hours for a 200 km trip, from Cluj-Napoca to Sibiu.
Excellent video.....have travelled multiple times on Italo. Great value for money.

Fabulous, the only way to go, it’s on my list!
Oh absolutely 😊

Italy is a wonderful county and also has amazing trains. Very good. 👍😊
It sure does 😀
Fantastic page you have here. Soo lively its like we board the train with you. Bravo.
Thanks! Watch my other vids too 😃
We took one of these between Bologna and Florence. I was hoping to see a bit of Italian countryside on my first day but quickly noticed the journey was mostly through a tunnel.
Yes 😂
Choose better next time - -
Between Bologna and Firenze are the Appennini.
Went from Rome to Florence on Italo in Prima. It was good. Still not sure whether I preferred the new Frecciarossa over it, but I'd say they're comparable.
Executive on Frecciarossa is just that bit better for sure. Otherwise comparable 🇮🇹
In the 70's the fastest train between Rome and Milan was called the Settebello which was also the brand name of a well-used condom (not by me).
😂😂😂
@@NonstopEurotrip Oh yeah, they called it the "slam bam thank you maam" choo choo train!

Termini mega station has been buit between 1939 eastern and western building by Angiolo Mazzini and from 1947 to 1950 for central building with the “pensilina”
Interesting 🤓
The steam loco stationed at Milan Centrale is a FS Gruppo 640, the second fastest steam locomotive class in Italy (fastest ones being the 685s at 120 km/h cruise speed); the one in Centrale is obviously for exposition only, but there a few still in working condition pulling the occasional steam powered historical train around Italy. Not as many or as well advertised as the UK's, but nice to check if someone's interested.
Thanks for the Information 😊 I've been past it so many times and never knew 🤣
The fastest were the 691 (130 Km/h)
Interesting and Very Beautiful Train, Thanks for Sharing, Greetings from Brazil
fun fact ... this train could go faster, but... we have to update the tracks for that LOL - I noticed there is a project ready to entirely re-do the Rome-Florence tracks for such a fast train. I think it could run at 330 or 340 Km/h - I can't wait
That's be good!
We will be taking this train in May, so thanks for very helpful info
You're welcome ☺️
Italo is my preferred train!
Mine too 🐱
there is an error in the description of the video, Italo is operated by NTV, and not by Trenitalia
Ah thank you! Very jealous of your network and trains 🙂🇮🇹
Hello ! Je vous remercie pour cette belle vidéo. J'ai voyagé avec ma sœur à Roma Termini il y a 45 ans. Cela a bien changé.

Yes, that's unfortunate you can't use interrail on Italo 😭

I've never seen that cheap 🙄
On my next to last day in Italy, back in 1979, I rode a high speed train from Roma to Napoli to get my last check for temporary lodging before departing for Virginia. I spent 3 great years on a NATO assignment for the USAF..
Highspeed in 1979 🙃
Beautiful train, excellent seats, first class entertainment console. But how can a top class luxury ticket only have a light snack and the ability to buy food from a vending machine? It's not a terribly long trip but there should be something better than that. Nicely presented video.
True yes, but it's not as expensive as the Frecciarossa executive, which does have full service. Still good though 🙂
Wow, looks a great product and service, thank you for sharing, very impressed. It’s interesting and I know it’s common in mainland Europe, but it’s very rare you make an “in/out” directional change midway in the UK at major stations. The only sad thing is as usual the amount of Graffiti which is always striking when travelling around the mainland of Europe.
