Memory (from observation), Imagination (drawing from fresh imagination + memory of what the subject would look like in actual).
The emotions - you draw that from imagination as well, there's a feeling that comes with the painting, you are not just painting the visuals, but painting the emotion as well, and I mean carrying the "feel" throughout the process. Just my guess. This guy's probably a chameleon, in that he probably also likes acting, heavy on introjection.
When they draw from imagination, they don't only draw what they see, they draw what the story they see altogether. Hard to explain, it's like carrying a whole theatre art in your head and putting in on paper.
The ability to project what you've introjected, for me, is something that makes an artist, an artist. When you sing, what makes the performances great is fully embodying the character talked about in the song and living in that moment, putting in that shoe, until the performance is done. I guess that's what's happening here, too. You are just bringing the theatre arts of your mind into paper. There are personality types who are adept at this, because they're multifaceted, it's easy to mix these artforms into paper.
But then, I guess, that's just my guess.
Not an expert, but that's what I see what's missing in someone's performance (when singing) and or creating an art piece, the theatre arts part.

@@Thesamurai1999 I think there is superior and inferior in artists, not art itself. That is dependent on how much skill they have, and the multiple facets needed for painting, like understanding form, light, anatomy, etc. But it’s nearly impossible to determine this as you’d have to know what exactly goes on in every artist’s brain and how it puts together a painting.

don't worry. I'm pretty sure this guy is using references.. he's just not telling anyone about it. There's too much information going on in this image to do it by imagination. There's anatomy, symmetry, composition, color, ambient lighting, reflected lighting, foreshortened perspective, proportions... the list goes on and on. All professionals use reference images and they always will. It's kinda messed up how a lot of these artists don't bring up references in their tutorials. When beginners go out and try to do it, they end up getting frustrated and discouraged because they're missing all the tools they need.

Everyone uses refrences, so dont think that its bad to use it too. The best way to get better is to learn from reality instead of Imagination. If you keep using refrences you will learn how to draw out of Imagination soon but you need the base Information

Seriously it can take years(3 to 4 yrs to reach this level) of practice. Even if u are not an digital artist n a hobbyst artist u can do it. U just need 2 push urself hard enough 2 learn. Initially it's frustrating cuz u never get it right but u get a hang on using every tools n control it so u can do it even if u r not an academical artist

I think the main thing you gotta have is a passion for it.
Passion, patience and determination are the keys. Passion to always keep you interested and enjoy painting. Patience to stay through hours of painting to get it right. Determination for not quitting when it's not going your way, and keep trying to make it work.
