wow i noticed that as well.. i grew up in a not so safe city when i was young (62 now) i never have more than about 300 to 800 baht in thailand and also leave my cheap phone at home 90% of the time.. lol
No never and never even felt even slightly uncomfortable wandering anywhere at anytime of day in all the countries across Asia I've lived and traveled. The only place you need be very aware of not putting your stuff out there in a position to be stolen is parts of Saigon and Manila, but that's just pick pockets and bag snatchers. Never heard or seen anybody being robbed or assaulted in Asia like you hear about in South America so seems like a very paranoid reaction to these guys just getting off their motorbike. Probably just stopping to see if the barber shop is open is what it looks like. Only trouble I've ever seen is when people have been very disrespectful to the locals.
