You’re a legend man. Can’t thank you enough. If you ever are feeling generous enough to donate and can use PayPal that is the best option so all money gets over here to Laos. From $100 I will receive less than $70. Thanks again, this helps more than you know.:)

Sorry to hear that Barry :( My husband is a Cambodian American and I’m a Loatian American, and we visited Cambodia the 1st time last November. His Visa entry was free but I paid $30, but got the pressure to give them tip money in Phnom Penh. We went to Lao and no issue with the entering process. We re-entered Cambodia through a flight to Siem Reip. They kept passing my passport to different windows/counters. Then, at the final counter, this official motioned for me to give him extra tip money. We were so scared! I think they let us off easy because we told them we had a friend who was picking us up at the airport. Of course, the fact that my husband could communicate with them in a foreign accent is another story 🤣

Seems like you’d be fine flying in. Cambodian people are lovely, but these visa officials are rats taking advantage of you in a moment you’re vulnerable being in another country without a visa. Sounds like you’ve seen both sides firsthand.

Well you’re good if you go with a group on a bus or minivan, but if you go by yourself it’s open invitation to rob you. They even asked me multiple times who did I come or if I came alone to which I foolishly replied I came alone when I should have replied what does that have to do with processing my visa on arrival.

So what happened at the boarder?
    Must’ve been atleast $10 a day overstay…maybe haggled down to $100.
Yes the Cambodian side rip off Visa Runners unfortunately because they know you don’t have any other options. That should’ve cost you about $70.
Then your Visa back into Laos $40. Plus tuk tuk and private boat…350,000 ($17). I think about $230?
I notice all that information is missing from the video.
But yes if you live in the North then doing a Visa run to Cambodia is the most expensive. Transport, accommodation, food, visa costs etc probably cost over $400.
Surprised you didn’t pay for a single entry visa at the Thai consulate in Vientiane.
Also that French chap! Classic. He’s never lived on Don Det. Shows how quickly a tourist can become a tour guide and make up stories 😂

Still working on presenting the details better as I tend to be throwing it all in there as I chat away. This is an easy way for everyone to see the breakdown though so thanks for the comment. You’re pretty much spot on. They didn’t charge me anything for overstay and could have for 24 days so the value of speaking the language and being friendly to everyone goes a long way, but the kindness of that officer still is shocking to me. Cambodia charged me $70 and Laos visa was the standard $40.
I wanted to see the South for the first time anyway so thought I’d make a trip out of it. Learned a lot and would stick with your advice if anybody is up North.
How much do you really know if you’re only here a few months 10 years ago..but the French guy seemed like a nice enough bloke and the family at smiling Lao seemed to know him well. Looks like a lot of foreigners have found themselves here a few months on an extended stay, but already feel like it’s home. All the good times at Adam’s bar may have something to do with that.;)

Thanks for your comment. This very topic is often used to insight anger in people as there is some truth to it, but a lot of times it’s simply folks not able to read the situation. Will make a video to help travelers know what’s actually acceptable and what’s just chatter.
