I'm 62 now and I did see it in the theater when it first came out Still the scariest movie I have ever seen. The whole theater, me included, jumped and screamed when the creature came out of his chest.

60 myself and I saw it in the theater too. What makes this movie so great, imo, is how slowly Ridley Scott builds the tension. I hadn't seen it done to that extent before and it's impossible to even conceive of happening now, given that the average attention span these days can probably be measured in seconds.
Really enjoy your reactions too. You put a lot of thought into them. It's also reassuring to know that you will never let an exposed butt crack go unnoticed. ; )

And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them. And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months. And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon. Revelation 9:1-11

Sir, what is your opinion about her saying that older movies are scarier?
I think she is spot on! Sugestion (because of still relatively primitive special effects) is FAR superior to CGI gore.
Having said that, the effects in the Alien franchise still is astounding this very day.

I was working for the Army in Heidelberg Germany when this movie came out, and I saw it with a theater full of young GIs. I specifically remember how rowdy and loud this audience was when the movie started. That all came to a screeching halt at the chest burster scene. Nobody had ever seen anything like that before and these GIs could only whisper about how gross this movie was. Ridley Scott's audacity as a filmmaker stunned us all into silence. Most people and critics at first thought this movie was terrible, but over time its reputation has grown into a horror masterpiece. That is true of so many movies. It may take years for people to appreciate how truly ahead of their time they are. That's certainly true of most of Kubrick's movies and Ridley Scott's early movies.

Some even call themselves filmmakers and yet you can tell that they don't learn anything. We've either seen the movies and really want to know what you think about them or we are seeing them for the first time with you and also appreciate the conversation after as most movies are supposed to make you talk and think and learn maybe something. I have technically watched it in theatres, but my parents watched it completely fresh in 1979 after hearing a Radio DJ saying how great it was. They said it was terrifying. The fact that it's so dark and you don't see much isn't an accident, but it has a similar story to Jaws - the director was tired of cheesy-looking aliens so avoided revealing it if he could, so it makes your imagination do the work.

All of us who watch reaction channels are people for whom these movies meant a lot; and it's good to see that someone so young can appreciate it and be surprised like we did at the time. When you show that level of interest and respect for those movies, we feel appreciated as well. Thanks for that. Now get ready for the sequel, which is radically different, but also a gem, especially in terms of production scale. And if you liked Ripley, in the sequel you will love her. Oh, Whimsory, you are *_so_* delightfully good at this! 😁 You immerse yourself in the story, and so we become invested, too! Your editing choices are also top notch, especially what you choose to retain. Many reactors cut out lots of early scenes in order to get to the climax more quickly, but with an atmospheric film like _Alien_ , removing too much of the set up also removes most of the suspense.
Finally, don't let any of the whiners out there cramp your style! I'm sure that as you gain experience, you'll be able to refine your editing and production process so that you can create reactions more quickly and efficiently. But many of us *_love_* the fact that you take time after the initial viewing to rewatch, research, and think about what you saw and read. It elevates your post-film discussions to a completely different plane compared to the rank and file reactors out there! Keep up the excellent work! 👍👍

Also, at this time, cinemas were quite strict with the age limits, and this one had a minimum age of 16 or 18. I still managed to get into the original Star Wars movie (minimum age 12), although it came out about a month before my birthday.
I watched Alien a couple of years later in theatre. In the 80s and 90s there were about 150 art house cinemas in Berlin, and you could watch basically any significant film ever made since the silent film era in cinemas, at least from time to time and Alien at least once per week. Excellent review, and yes, Aliens is a "must watch" following this, in all honesty the next two are just money grabs, these first two were phenomenally successful and made tons of money, and each are complete stories, 3 and 4 feel like they're cashing in on that success and not only have nothing of real value to add, they may actually detract from the first, your reviews feel like much more than simple "reaction videos", you put a great deal of thought and effort into them, and it shows, great job

amazing, can't wait to see more reactions in the near future. Also absolutely love the way she said "i'b be pissed at 33:21 😂

You could go faster, but I love that you take the time to read up about the film, re-analyze it in editing and actually research and delve deep on these things. It belies an intelligent, methodical mind and thirst for knowledge beyond being just a reaction channel. It adds an extra layer to what you do that kinda makes you stand out from other reactors. I appreciate your methodology.
Though your unfamiliarity and bewilderment with Space and some of the comments you made about this just has me so curious to see you tackle the Star Trek tv franchise someday.

Saw it opening day at the Egyptian in Hollywood. First screening. Cold. No spoilers, no word of mouth. I was in my 20s. We walked past the Space Jockey and through the Mother computer room to enter the theater. People were screaming at the chest burster scene - I was already terrified and shut my eyes when his T-shirt got bloody - but when Ash's head came off it was totally unexpected. It showed the audience "We can still surprise you."
There was a subplot involving Dallas and Ripley having a relationship but it never made it to the final cut. And the actors knew what was going to happen to Kane, but they didn't know that they were going to get spattered with a LOT of blood. Veronica Cartwright was caught in the fire and her reaction is real.

You don't need press yourself to make more reactions. Quality is more important than quantity, and one of the reasons I like your reactions is because you clearly take your time with them to do them right rather than just making half-hearted, uninteresting content just to get clicks. I don't watch a lot of reaction channels because a lot of them frankly are annoying and/or sub-par, but I appreciate your thoughtful approach and real effort.
Anyway, you shouldn't watch the rest of the franchise - just Aliens, and then stop there and consider that the end of the story like I do. The rest kind of blow in one way or another. But Aliens is a sci-fi masterpiece. It is completely different in style and tone than Alien, but equally great for completely different reasons. Looking forward to when you finally get around to that one.
    Anyway, another good reaction. Thanks.
By the way, I did originally see this in theaters and it scared the pants off me and everyone else. Audiences were a lot less desensitized back then, and very few truly scary movies had yet entered the public consciousness when Alien was originally released. Only beginning in about 1975 (there are some earlier exceptions of course) did mainstream American horror cinema begin to come into its own.

27:20 - "..., 'cause most of it is in your head." - Yes! You're very perceptive; you're the first reactor I've seen pick up on that. This movie is _famous_ for that. The alien is hardly ever seen, and yet it looms incredibly large in the movie, generating enormous tension _because_ you don't see it and your mind is therefore free to "fill the shadows" as you alluded to earlier. This movie more or less invented that technique.

Yea, the older the movie the less overtly bloody and gory it is. The onscreen deaths are not too bad compare to modern horror. At the same time, the general sense of dread and foreboding is emphasized through the music, sets, camera and so on is heavier in turn for when the jump scare or killing does happen it does get to you.

So the picture was huge, and the experience was all-encompassing. It still stands as the number one scariest movie I ever saw. The whole place, a hundred people, screamed like crazy as the creature broke out of John Hurt's chest and all the other jump scares, etc. There was a lot of screaming in the theater that day, 40-some years ago and I remember it well.
