The ending of this novel makes me chuckle in as much as a morbid sensation as the author intended.... Created by humans, they too will suffer the same fate as humans.
As much as I enjoyed "Screamers" as a movie, I've always preferred this original book canon better. Although I did like the movies "alien world" setting above the post-apocalyptic earth setting of the book, you get a bit more backstory in this than you do in the movie. "David" is creepy in both versions though!
This was better than the movie, Dixk wrote this admits the Cold War, which seemed like it would go on forever. Therefore in the future it's still going on. Loved it
I think the ending here where they find that the machines have started building weapons to kill other varieties of machine is a more powerful ending than the movie ending.
My god this was good! All in all, I have to admit that I still prefer the movie (Screamers). But everything at the point with the ship to leave earth and up until the very end is far better then the movie. I'm glad that even though the movie got the "hollywood treatment" where the robot could fall in love, it still sticks to the original thought, but in an opposite direction (the book they become more "human" because they start to kill each other, and in the movie it's that they can start to have feelings). My god I would love to see a remake of the movie where they'd change the ending to fit the book.. That would pretty much be the best movie ever!
The reader is Phil Chenevert who managed with his strange intonation & inappropriate emphasis to ruin, for me at least, most of the "Stainless Steel Rat" stories. He has his own niche with Librivox I'm sure but I don't know where!
+Edward Malc I've only just realised! The early 90's film "Screamers" was spawned from this story. It's a good film. But if you happen to like it please don't bother with "Screamers 2". Pure unrelated rubbish.

Love the way the story is narrated.
You do? Lmao

Phil is one of my favorite book readers!
Really?
The narrator reminds me of Jim Barris from A Scanner Darkly
Have you seen the movie Screamers?
Yes! I just listened to Paul Giamatti’s reading of A Scanner Darkly, his voice for Barris has a very similar cadence

Thanks for uploading this.
Good story 👍 I like the reader; reminds me of Dan Ackroyd
Found the story gripping and easy to follow. So I cant fault the reader.
Sure you can. Give it a whirl.
@@scottcrocker3702 Hahaha!!
I can, lol
Why don't folks like the reader? I don't get it.
Like an autistic android trying to sound human
Second Variety

He's what you call a Narrator Troll. He knows perfectly well how much he sucks.
Inappropriate intonation, for sure
Enjoyed the book. The reader...not so much.
The reader of the novel needs to be reprogrammed.
too funny. and right.
Lmao
Just my opinion, but I really dislike the reader for this one. Maybe for another story he would be fine, but the delivery _here_ sounds wrong.
the narrator would be better suited to reading children's books. he makes all the characters sound bored
Mj Liston bored and apathetic
Agreed about the reader. Nice that the movie "Screamers" was so faithful to the book. Except for the end!
No mention of The Terminator, surely there's a connection 🤔
So badly narrated I could cry. This guy needs to be reading Somerset Maugham or romance novels . ..
"The third sphere slowly climbed up the Russians leg..."
Sorry sir I could not dis-agree more. This is earlier Phil, he has refined his narrative skills somewhat, still like this narrative though.

Horrible narration
Indeed
What a dismal choice of narrator. Totally wrong.
Way to slow
Speed may be alright, but he sounds all lazy and apothetic
