One of the best, most creepy short stories I have ever read. I am currently reading more short stories by Dick and he was most certainly obsessed with the concept of reality versus the fantastic. Very well read!!!
This was one of the very best-narrated stories I have heard here. I think this is a very good story for an audiobook. The movie "Screamers" (which I think had sequel) is worth watching.
yeah the female character is not so sympathetic in the book. same with 'do androids dream of electric sheep'. The movies always make the heroine softer. they must be taking their cues from Asimov 😃
Kinda saw the ending a mile away, but I guess that's the result of decades and decades of intervening science fiction including film/tv from when this was written to till today.
That hand holding the head was " swiped " ( to use non - judgemental comic book fan hargon ) from EC's Crime SuspenStories #22 which was displayed at a damning Senate hearing over the causation of '50s childhood decadence . I an artist and have drawn that exactly many times .
There has to be a connection, yes. Ridley Scott made Blade Runner (based on a PKD story of course) in 1982, and The Terminator was released two years later. And some years later Cameron continued Ridley's Alien tale - but that's just trivia. Interestingly some versions of The Terminator contain an acknowledgement credit to Harlan Ellison (from my understanding there was a monetary agreement after release). Interestingly Harland's story/script for Soldier episode in Outer Limits is not about robots, but war and time travel. I personally feel The Terminator is a mix of the two, accidental or not.
@@YTispartofproblem I prefer " shuvved ". Didn't you know we can do that now ? Yeah, just ' think something up ' and therefore ' it is ' ! No need to spell correctly or follow conventions we've used for hundreds of years. That's just sooo ( see what I did their..😜 ) " white supremicists " .
Are you talking to the author who died in 1982? Are you a moron? Or would you like to retroactively alter every book so that the ridiculous and childish cult you subscribe to doesnt have his precious feelings hurt? Pathetic.
By "the lord's name" I presume you refer to "god" because that's at 2:21 but "god" is not the name of anything, it's a descriptive term, it refers to several super-human and otherworldly entities in human experience and imagination and has literally hundreds of names. So no it isn't any lords name, and goddamn might refer to any one out of several of these.

one of my favourite stories ever, its a little masterpiece
The ending was beautuful.
FYI This novel was adopted into movie called Screamers.

When I was a kid this book freaked me out because the machines start using child robots to gain sympathy from humans.
The movie brought me here.
Great stuff!! Love the movie too. This artwork spoils too much though 😂
Thank you for sharing. As long as some one can profit the horrors of weaponry will increase.
Correct. Boeing, Ratheon, Lockheedmartin, the military industrial complex will always push war
the movie screamers actually

this ending was way better than the movie

Greg Marguerite narration. The best.
Great story, obviously the inspiration for the Terminator movies...
Nonsense. Having one similar idea doest mean a thing.
Lmao ur dumb if you think this made terminator
@@robirvine6970yes it does you idiot
Well that seemed to be more of a terminator influence than anything else that I've heard of.
Bizarre bird chipping sound...
I think James Cameron probably owes Philip K. Dick's estate some cash.

Russian dive mines sound like switchblade drones.
A weaker pkd story, the ending was clear from a mile away
The cover is a bit of a spoiler
The moreJew names that get shuvved into a story or film, the more likely of its distribution and " success "...
Are you feeling ok today?
"shoved"🤭

hoi
The narration was awful
Mmmm
2 minutes and 21 seconds in and you have to use the Lord's name in vain. Totally uncalled for.

What lord?
Ah yes, people taking things too seriously. Isn't humanity great?
Arled who art in heaven.
sounds like screamers was based off this from the first chapter.
