As a stone and brick mason, I’m impressed. Only thing I would have changed would be to use 1/2 tape for smaller joints and then maybe take a razor blade to alter the tape here and there to make it look more realistic. Nicely done
Thank you so much! I would have liked it better with the smaller joints too. I watched someone else used that size tape and didn’t even think about it but next time for sure. Have a great day 😊
@@jackvillan5151 Great ideas. I was thinking I would lightly press a brick sized sponge into the joint compound to give it some of the brick look and help erase the lines the trowel made. But it still looks great.
Thanks you. I was just shopping yesterday for a stencil to do bricks on my wall, kinda expensive, or getting those bricks panels which would have involved $150 plus I would have to rent a truck!! I am so glad I found your video. I have done designs on walls with joint compound before. Didn't think of brick so thank you so much! Your wall looks great! Wish me luck! 😁
That’s awesome! I’ve had some comments that I should have used a narrower tape to make the grout lines smaller. Just something to think about. Good luck! It going to look great 😊
TIP: If you leave the tape in place after applying the joint compound, you can simply paint it all at once and then peel the tape off last to reveal the "grout lines" instead of painting each individual brick and having to worry about getting paint in the grout lines.
No sorry this doesn’t work, the compound will crack and crumble and tape may not lift under the weight of dry compound, compound must still have moisture in it and then you also develop softer rounded edges in your brick and less mess and mishaps
1) .07 tape is too thick for grout lines. Find a thinner tape if you want a realistic look. 2) Grout is rarely white. Use a warm gray as an under coat. 3) Mix paint into the joint compound to use as a base color. Saves you a step, helps primer the compound, and helps it stick to the drywall. 4) Use a small roller with the brick color you want. If you put it on dryish, you create texture with each color.
I think I would have tinted the base coat or primer so it wasn't such a stark white color for the "mortar" lines. Great DIY tutorial! I'm seeing this a few years out from when you completed this project. Are you still pleased with it, and do you still live in the same home? If you've moved, how did potential buyers react to the faux brick?
Thank you! Yes, after the video I went back and added a lot of white with a little bit of brown peeking through the edges. I think it looks much better. When I added the white wash over the brown it smeared it and I didn’t like it. It looked grey.
I still live here. This was the first house that I bought and built and we are still here after 26 years. I see a lot of UA-camrs adding the faux brick in other areas and it looks great. Everybody has different tastes. Hopefully who ever buys my house loves it.
My wall was tan so I painted the wall white just for the grout lines. If you have a wall that’s white then you can skip that step. You could also use primer if you wanted too. Most of the wall is covered with joint compound. Hope this helps. Any more questions just let me know. Have a great day 😊

Thank you so much 😊 that’s awesome! I went back and added more white. It looks so much better. The white wash smeared the other color and I didn’t like it. Also think about maybe you want your grout lines not as wide. What area are you putting the brick? Good luck.
@@decoratingfanatic I'm doing the kitchen! Yeah, I thought about the gap and I measured the outside brick wall and it was between 1/4" - 3/8". So maybe I'll look for narrower tape? Thanks again for the video, AWESOME!
Looks really good! I think your problem with the paint peeling was oils - you may have washed it down but made it look like your dad. Or possibly the type of paint you use underneath. Not all paint is the same - I paint a lot of furniture walls and I used to think cheap paint was just fine. If you want to still use leftover paint or an expensive paint you may need a good scrub & or primer to avoid that. Granted you were able to do a fix it - so it is what it is. But I would’ve put a little bit of Kilz or Zinsser 1-2-3 & it is less odorous. I think for this project I would stick with the kilz. Anyway it looks excellent I’ll have to see what else you’ve worked on I like the budget friendliness!
Hi, I would wait until paint dries. I even notice the it smeared the brown paint. Not shown in my video but I went back with white paint and made it more white with a little brown showing through. I like it much better. If you do this project I would make the joints smaller by using tape that’s not as wide. Good luck!

It looks very nice! I have a few questions. Did you ever use that Sherwin Williams paint (Kilim Beige)? Did you have to paint the grout lines again to get rid of the green marker you used?
Thank you so much 😊 I realized the kilim beige was too light and yes I did go back and paint. I also could see pencil lines but it’s so easy to go back and paint the white before you start adding the dark color to the bricks.
Thank you so much and welcome to my channel 😊 I went back and added some more white which I like better. It seems when I applied the white over the brown it smeared the two colors together. Have a great week!
I did this in my bathroom. I used a half in tape... the .07 is too thick. And lightweight spackle is needed . It won't crumble off and is easier to apply because it's not heavy. How did you fix the 16 inch brick?
I bet it turned out great! I went back and peeled the tape off. It was covered up. If I was to do it again my tape would be smaller. Have a great day 😊
Did you put the tape down the center lines right on the edge or centered it between the line? I saw one video where they centered the tape on the line. I need the easiest way possible. Thanks
anyone else notice the brick that she missed taping at 8inches and its longer than the others???? i do however love this project and her methods of making it neat and beautiful are amazing.. i will be trying this.. any suggestions on cleaning?
Thank you so much 😊 I caught that after wards and pulled the tape off. I also added more white to it and looks so much better. In the video it looks like the white smeared with the brown and looks grey, but I went back over it with more white paint. I haven’t had to clean mine but I would probably just use some soap and water and if that doesn’t work I’ll get out the paint and touch up. Good luck with your project.

Looks fantastic! I'm thinking about doing a similar project so this is a great example! Question: How long did you wait to pull the tape after putting on the joint compound? Thanks!

@hauntrepeneurs ... So what you're saying is, to mix a warm gray with the joint compound for the base coat? Thanks
