I'm considering doing this technique on a blank wall in my house. Like always, I check your channel first to see if you can help me out. So thank you again!
Wow! The end product looks incredibly realistic! The texture of the joint compound matches the look of brick perfectly. Makes me want to go out and try it myself! Great work!
That is a interesting process. It looks really good. I had planned on covering my cemetery columns with faux brick and stucco, but figured it out to be way too expensive to use the foam like I wanted. I might be able to afford to do it with this process. Thank you for sharing. Your videos are always top notch.
I put filler (americans say mud I think?) on an internal brick in my room to get a smooth surface but only an inch needed to be smooth. I’ve been trying to figure out how to make the rest of the brick look like a brick again for ages!! I’ve watched so many brick fixing DIY channels but its all like “replace the brick.” Finally found my answer on a Halloween fake brick video 😂
Love this! I am so glad I found your channel...painting techniques are great! I feel like I have really learned some top-notch tricks of the trade! Thank you so much!
I've never tested it, but would assume that the acrylic paint will protect it and I would consider an additional layer of something like Thompson's Water Seal just to be safe.
I have this on my back splash in my kitchen. I put 3 coats of cabniet epoxy based paint and a top layer of semi gloss polyurethane. Its going on 9 years and holding up excellent. No problems around the sink or stove. There is a uv paint for outdoors that would be perfect for outside things. I will be using that when I do my outdoor kitchen area
Also for the mordor in the brick. I've heard of people painting clear glue in the lines then brushing baby powder onto the brick and blowing off the access. Gives it a very natural look. Then once you age it it doesnt look so white.
Im thinking of doing this for a wall in my co-op. I plan to put panels up on the wall then apply the compound. Do you think the same technic can be used?
Great question. Unfortunately I’m not sure. It’s what you would use to blend them seams of newly installed walls or to fill cracks. Not sure if that helps any.
Hi. I'm trying to make a Dracula's Castle tomb wall in my living room on a very cheap budget. Will this work on anything. Like foam core board? Or Fluted plastic? Or wood only?
I’d stick to non porous surfaces since there’s moisture in the joint compound. If you’re using plastic be sure to scrape up the surface so it’s got something to bite into.
Yeah, it's a pretty useful technique, even if you're not making brick. There's plenty of other applications for this concept. Raised letters/numbers, logos, etc.
Long story short, I’m trying to do my bedroom in a dungeon theme (parents called my room growing up 😜). I’m going for the stone wall effect and any tips for achieving this realistically would be appreciated. I’ve already made a set of handcuffs for the “torture “ wall and a set of skeleton sconces for above my bed-so it’s not coming along too bad. But honestly the gray walls need the stone effect before anything else. Thanks in advance! 😊👍🏻
Awesome tutorial as usual. I was thinking this would be a great way to do my cemetery columns. Do you think it would hold up to rain? Would a coat of Dry Loc on the top help with weather proofing? Thanks so much for all of your work! It's greatly appreciated.
Yes to both, assuming the joint compound is completely dry before any additional coating is applied. As an added layer of protection you could spray it with Thompson’s water seal.
Another awesome video and tutorial Derek!! These have all been so amazing! Thanks for sharing and thanks for spreading the Halloween spirit!! #halloweenisnotcancelled 🎃👻💀👍
Thanks, Jen! I’d say this is faster, more accessible, and cheaper than foam. On realism, it’s a tough call. They both can look pretty real if done well. I think the biggest drawback on the joint compound version is thickness. Much easier to do really dimensional brick with foam.
I let it set for 30 minutes before removing the tape. It prevents the smudging and moving. I did this for a back splash. Holding up after 10 years.

think the texturing is what impressed me the most, that was clutch. well done.
Thank you!

Holy crap that looks so good! Thanks for sharing.
Layers of color is the way to go! Thanks for this fantastic tutorial!
Always!
AWESOME tutorial!
Can this be used for set pieces that will be outdoors? Does the paint protect the joint compound from water?

Interesting! I’ve never heard of that approach but I’ll give it a try.
Thank you for sharing. Valuable info

Are you looking for something temporary or permanent?
I want to make some brick columns similar to yours. Should I make the brick part like this or cut out foam bricks?
I'd go the foam route. They'll do better in the October weather.
@@VanOaksProps ok, thank you!
Could this method work on a bedroom wall for more of a permanent look?
Yes, it could.
love these vids so much
Thank you!

Can this be used for cobblestone walls too?
Definitely.
Fantastic

He is great!!
can't wait to test this out
Good luck!!
Awesome! Love it
Thanks!!
I'm going to try this with my Beetlejuice project. Drawing a door with Chalk on the brick fireplace wall of the attic
That sounds awesome and a perfect way to make use of this technique.
Wonderfull.
What song is at 4:45? I keep hearing it in these videos but I can never find it.
It's just some royalty free stock music.
Genius!
Thank you!
These would look great as Haunted Mansion style gate columns! 999
mmmm .... moldy brick. : P
Wow. That looks SO good! Awesome stuff, Derek. How would you compare this to the foam brick method? In terms of cost, time, realism, etc?

🔥🔥🔥
haunted shovel!!!!!!!!!!
I'll see what I can do...
Did anyone else have a problem with the video cutting out in the beginning?
Might have been a glitch in the matrix.

I was hoping this was a diy for real walls :(
You can use this technique on real walls.
I’ll have to make 999 bricks on my wall! @collinrileyriot
