  • I took seven pet ant colonies and placed them into a single arena to discover if the ant colonies would band together to form a polygynous colony. The initial interaction was a bit concerning, however after my subscribers voted to keep the colonies together and follow through with the experiment, the aftermath was truly devastating! Please remember to vote at the end of the video to help me and the ant colonies out. Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution.

    I agree with the people saying the first colony had an advantage. Colony #1 walked in alone and already got to the food by the time #2 came, and the very first interaction #2 had outside of their tube was touching a foreign ant. Every other colony afterward could probably smell the other tubes of ants instantly

      That's what i noticed, #1 had way too much time to mark the sterile biome as their territory. The other colonies got added too late so they more than likely thought the area they found was owned by #1 for a long time. Seeing as how most of them didn't leave their nests at all on video.

    I don’t know if it’s possible for ants to feel emotional but the way the 8th queen was standing over the bodies of her children was honestly kind of sad. It was like she was mourning them, her antennas were drooping over them like she was in disbelief that they were gone like that. My vote goes to Colony 1. Daring explorers, courageous defenders, wonderful workers and great warriors. Deserve a home upgrade. But I also agree with some of the comments that vote to keep the unmated queen as a pet to see how long she and her lazy sons can carry on with help from you. I also have a thought... If you release the queen ant to another colony's nuptial flight, will she have a chance again? Or will she be killed for being a stranger? Theories... Theories....

      I agree with what you said completely. Now, to try and answer your question with my (very limited) knowledge on ants: I doubt that if let into another nuptial flight, she will mate again. Just a theory, but maybe queens that don't successfully mate, as in never engage in the act with the male of the species, keep their wings to re-join in the next nuptial flight. My guess is that this queen did mate, but it was unsuccessful in some manner and she didn't know because there is no way to know, hence her ripping her wings off and laying eggs. I don't know enough about ants to further my theory, but it seems sound, as many in the original batch never ripped off their wings.

    I think your experimental design was also flawed. You should of attached all the tubes simultaneously. The first tube had an advantage and released pheromones that the tubes detected, thus they did not leave their tubes as quickly. Tube 1 was allowed to essentially claim the territory. It might have been different if they all had the same initial exposure to the arena. Likely would still result in deaths, but it would be an interesting long term experiment to flesh out your hypothesis.

      @The 143 Pacer You know much more than me. I just have a master's degree in Biology so I know experimental design is very important. If you formulate your hypothesis, it needs to be exact. You have to make sure everything is the same between the control and the treatment groups, all other variables have to be exactly the same. It is really tricky in biology, but not following this can lead to false conclusions. If you are testing if these groups will somewhat coexist, they have to exposed to the variables simultaneously. Starting with releasing one colony gives that colony an advantage. I like your ant experiments and I encourage them. If it may seem cruel, you need to follow a strict regimen to test your hypothesis. Furthermore, I encourage that you write about your scientific findings to an open source publisher like plus one, you can try higher for peer review, but not likely without being accredited. There are not a lot of ant labs, you have a good set up. I would also recommend going to conferences like the entomological society of America. They will appreciate your work I think.

  • @pavelZhd
    @pavelZhd Рік тому +138

    I know I am a bit late to the party, but I think you did pull the plug on the experiment prematurely.
    All the casualties being from one colony while multiple colonies were engaging in hostilities against it might have indicated that this colony 8 - just like colony 7 you mentioned previously - was from a different species. So while removing this victimised colony from the experiment while it could still recover was the right call, you should've kept the others together for a bit longer. Maybe this would give the Queen 5 a chance at surviving.

  • @emeralddetailing
    @emeralddetailing Рік тому +28

    I feel it would've been smarter to block off the test tubes before continuing the experiment, so you can keep an eye on them when they're out. I thought this was why you had the arena bare in the first place. I was surprised on your decision to leave them overnight. Keeping an eye on them would've helped the educational part a whole lot as well, because now we don't know what happened. We can just assume what's happened from the aftermath.
    It looks like most of the colonies targeted that single colony. And you don't know if the others showed any aggression. This could've very well been clarified through observing, as stated before.
    I wish you could've continued the experiment and kept a closer eye on them, but I can't complain, as there's no way I'd pressure someone into risking animals' lives for my own knowledge. Not everything is as important as life and death.

With 8 being the only one raided and losing eggs and workers from 3 others, without any other violence among the rest. I think you should get them tested to see what species you actually have. The only way to get new females to mate with the males are during nuptial flight when females grow wings. thats a year off or so. So this is a no go. But i like the idea of fusing the unmated queen with another colony as she is gonna die anyways.

    • @that1geekychick
      @that1geekychick 2 роки тому +28

      The offspring are all male because that's how ant genetics work out. Males have one set of chromosomes, while females have two. This queen never found a mate to pass on its genetic material and provide the second set of chromosomes needed for female offspring, so she can only make haploid males. A change in environmental conditions unfortunately isn't going to fix that.

      Yea I agree the other colonies are more likely to start a war so if you protect the 8th colony of workers. Make them mass in numbers and thrive with work. Then at the same time make the other tubes smaller every day to push the other colonies closer and see what happens. Rather than let nature take it’s course and allow the more dominante races kill other colonies, I think you should step in and separate the colonies and make them aware that you are there, forcing them to live with each other. Then re introduce the 8th colony with the big mansion full of working ants to the other groups who have been forced to live together and watch them figure something out. This is the only way you can make them all work with each other and maybe overthrow the big colony.

      It's not "let them fight".. after the outcome, colony 1s ant surviving, theres a chance that these colonies might acutally work together.. cause if colony 3 really were hostile, they wouldve killed colony 1s ant at the spot.. so most of us voted to let the project continue, With a better approach: supervising them, put them in a smaller gathering spot, opening the tubes all at once so that its a new enviorment not filled with colony 1 pheromones... but instead he left them unsupervised for a nightlong. Like what do u expect? :/ i dont blame him though, let us all just learn from the process.

    PS: re the unmated female, it would be interesting to see if there is a change in behaviour if you keep putting food into their home. Except for when you need to change their water supply, so (I assume) you will "encourage" them to go into an identical, clean tube, they're unlikely to ever need a larger home than the one you've given them (perhaps the larger Ants Canada test tube to give them room to stretch their wings? There - got a plug in for your store!). But hunger might compel the queen and the males to actively get the food you'd supply in their tube. Whether that would encourage them to share is unlikely (though maybe not impossible? Evolution has occurred in part by selection due to behavioural adaptation as well as natural selection on physical grounds, after all). If they could keep themselves alive this way, they might live until the next nuptial flight. It would be great to see if the queen could at least fulfill her destiny.

    so with colony 5... Mother-son mating (oedipal mating), as queens typically avoid inbreeding, mate only early in life and do not mate again after having begun to lay eggs. In the ant genus Cardiocondyla mating occurs among sib in the natal nests. Sex ratios are extremely female-biased and young queens face the risk of remaining without mating partners. Here, we show that virgin queens produce sons from their own unfertilized eggs and later mate with them to produce female offspring from fertilized eggs. Oedipal mating may allow queens to found new colonies when no mating partners are available and thus maintains their unusual life history combining monogyny, mating in the nest, and low male production.

I probably got lucky because I just put her in with the colony and they treated her like family. But I tried it again with a different colony recently and it didn't work. I kept her in a test tube with a metal screen blocking the entrance and placed it in the colony's outworld for 2 weeks. But when I released her she roamed around for a few hours, it was during the night, and when I woke up she had been killed. Is there general time limit for them to acclimate to the scent?

    3:51 the only problem with taking votes is the human inclination to “follow the crowd”….this definitely doesn’t apply to everyone, many are leaders and have strong opinions uninfluenced by others, but many are heavily biased by popular opinion.
    Also, many of us are by no means ant experts, myself included. If I held a vote, I would ask the audience to note if they had experience raising ants.
    Finally, plenty of casual viewers and fans have asked to see ant fights and chaos, so would their votes have been made in good faith?
    Better to have consulted an ant expert first or encyclopedia to see if this species was inclined to integrate with other colonies or not.

    Colony 1, for sure! They have been through so much and were featured on the channel so much. They were like the “star colony” on this journey so far. I think they really deserve a new and better home. And since they have grown to a larger size, I feel like that they should really deserve a new home. But, I also have a feeling that it’s still too early for an AC ant tower. Like you mentioned in a video a while ago, when giving a starting ant colony a huge home too early may result in huge stress of the colony. Maybe an AC test tube portal with a second test tube for some more brood and worker space, perhaps? You can decide, AntsCanada.

    I feel like the experiement could have worked, if it was done on a much smaller scale. 7 newly forming colonies in such a tiny space, during their most vulnerable time of development... it would have been a huge cross over of unfamiliar scents and might have created a hostile environment just from the conflicting signatures alone. The feeling of 'it's not safe' and '1 food source' to compete over.
    But, with that worker from colony 1 that they had taken to the queen in 3... They didn't kill her. Those two colonies (alone) might have been able to mix under supervision, since there wasn't outright hostility, and via that, they had the most exposure to each other.
    I think with most animals, it's better to start small and slow, not big and rushed.

      I agree. He got impatient with the experiment and decided to rush things instead of taking it slow and seeing what would happen. Yeah, he had the right idea in the last video when he said he was going to introduce them one at a time, but then he got really impatient for some reason, so instead of doing that he pretty much added them all at once.if he would have waited till they actually had aligned or fought to the death, he might have been able to avoid what happened to 8. It just may have happened on a smaller scale to a different colony.

    Ok i might get backlash for this, but i have a theory.
    You know the red-ish carpenter ant colony? Well i was thinking, if that was a different species, so could the others. I recommend you send a worker to an ant biologist for a proper ID. On all the ant colonies. Whilst you wait, make theories about the results if you want. Im mainly focused on the fact that only a single colony was attacked, the others were fine (except when the worker was dragged, and it wasn't killed) Im not saying you should, i just say its my theory. I believe you should check species. You could place the other colonies in a similar area to see if they merge, It might cause a war tho idk 'w'
    I guess what I'm tryna say is
    Only one colony was harmed, that could mean it was a different species to the others, send worker ants to an ant biologist for them to ID it and determine if its polygenous or not

That was literally the best case scenario and we knew that, but everybody wanted to see them kept together anyway. How do you think he would feel if it had been a lot worse? And she doesn't have the mental capacity to understand that she's not in the wild and that there's a human out there taking care of her, so she doesn't have to constantly panic about all these survival necessities seemingly not being met. Based on how they left their homes one at a time earlier, I'm wondering how it is that the other colony was able to get over run to begin with, the home team would seem to be at such a natural advantage.
