One of my first ant queens suffered from this fate. I brought it downstairs during a family dinner and announced it to the entire room. Dinner was great.
Imagine getting trapped inside of another species, so you ate their insides to survive and get out, only to find out that you're stuck inside a plastic tube
I know many people will say it’s just an ant, they’re pests, they don’t have complex feelings, and so on an so forth. But I can’t help feeling an intense sadness and extremely sorry for the poor queen ant. Life as an insect sure isn’t a walk in the park, even when you’re the queen.
That is what It means to be Human. We've been gifted with the ability to FEEL emotions And Complex Emotions At that. It's not only for us, it's only Human to have these Feelings for beings that are not so significant in our lives, yet we still feel for them, learn from them. That is what It means to be Human. And that is Truly Beautiful😊
I don't feel pity for these ants not because they're insignificant, but because they had it coming. Ants are descendants of wasps, and ancient wasps (and some wasps to this day like emerald wasps) are parasitoids who also injects their eggs into their host and then their larvae will come to eat the host inside out. Given their family lineage, this is just a case of one reaping what they sow.
I enjoyed my bowl of clam chowder. Eating while watching horse things doesn’t bother me. What did bother me is I’m heavily pregnant and days away from having this baby and as the maggots started emerging, this little one decided it was the perfect time to start exercising inside me. Feeling something move inside you while watching maggots move inside a dead ant is not pleasant.
i think she felt the cold of the freezer seeping out before being placed in there. honestly if i was in the queens position i'd say end me quickly too.
Well I mean if I physically look at a piece of disgusting or dirty substance I may just vomit instantly but a MAGGOT that is TOO FAR I may have slightly trained my gag reflex to not be so sensitive BUT I CANT DO THAT
This information is pretty accurate, except that the phorids lay their eggs INTO the body of the ant, not ON the exoskeleton. The females of the flies have sharp, piercing egg-layers that can pierce the membrane between the hard sclerites of the ant. The species of fly is called Trucidophora camponoti.

AC answer of the week: Ant-decapitating flies belong to the genus Apocephalus. The Zombie fly also belongs to this genus. Crypt, or phorid flies also belong to this genus. :)
I never knew there was so much to learn about ants before watching some of your videos. Though I wouldn't yet consider myself a true ant lover, I am certainly more content examining them than exterminating them. Truly fascinating creatures that humans have more in common with than I would have ever imagined.
You can learn more about stuff like ants on UA-cam in a week than the average college could teach you in a whole year. YT is actually a great start for learning if that’s your goal
Species in the genus Apocephalis are members of the family Phoridae, and members of this family often are reterred to as Phorid Flies, hump-backed flies, or scuttle flies. There are approximately 4,000 species of Phorids. Btw in our house there's a lot of and black ant and most importantly (Leaf Cutter ants)
@@unigifki I don't know but do you feed you're queen ant water because they need fresh water or something oh and btw our house is covered with ants and leaf cutter ants sometimes i see really big queen ants inside of our house and we would let it go

I love watching you with all your different ant spices and to be able to watch mother nature at her wonderful but sometimes gross but interesting nature that always fascinated me I can't wait to see more of your videos
Why'd you have to go and make things so complicated? I see the way you're acting like you're somebody else. Gets me frustrated. Just admit that you love the videos I make, my dear nata
In the last week there, I had the Late August round of Nuptial flight. I work in my apartment building’s pool so there were thousands of reproductives in there. The pavement ants were being cooperative helping one another to stay afloat. But some of the large Yellow ants in their were fighting, and at least 3 of them that I noticed had their gaster removed so they could no longer lay eggs after I got the out. Nature is both beautiful and brutal.
just a random note but it’s so interesting how we’ve evolved that feeling of our “skin crawling” when we see things like maggots as a way of our brain keeping us away from decay, it’s like our brain putting its foot down like “no we’re not getting closer to that, now squiggle with fear” lol
The type of flies belonging to the apocephalus genus is zombie flys, they take over the brains of other insects like ants, a little like the one in the video but not exactly that.
YAY YOU TALKED ABOUT THE ANT DECAPITATING FLY!!! I wrote you guys on Facebook about this years ago and I was told you guys were gonna do more research about it to see if it was real before talking about it in a video 😁
I’m not the squeamish sort, I love watching grizzly operations on UA-cam for instance, but parasites coming out of any living thing is at the top of my short no-fly list. I’m trying really hard to not acknowledge what I know is happening to that poor creature, 😱 because otherwise I would have nightmares about it for weeks. For those with stronger stomachs I wish you happy viewing. 😁 I need to go look at *lots* of pictures of happy baby animals now. 🤣
@@lindaaristizabal wow that's a very understanding comment and I have a ton of respect for this opinion!! The truth is though, this is one of the things that sets us apart from most, if not all, of the other life on earth, we feel the need to TRY and play god ourselves and regulate how things are. It's unfortunate but true. Some days I have very little hope that humans will ever change and realize that we aren't that different from everything else. Just because we consider ourselves to be the greatest thing ever, doesn't mean we are, and it definitely doesn't give us the authority to become judge, jury and executioner. Thank you for being so unbiased and remaining what we truly are among the world's wildlife.... observers!
@@jeffffro7674 thank you! And you as well! This were my thoughts exactly, humans always try to play god and decide which creatures deserve to suffer or live based on how pleasant they are for us to look at. @@lindaaristizabal Beauty, Brains AND Compassion, that's a powerful combo, keep on imparting a message of we're all in this together and we have to find a way to share the place, you just may turn things around enough for "rare sense" to once again become "common sense"!!!!! With so much change happening, now almost on a daily basis, it feels like a huge turning point, one for the history.....uhhh ipads? I guess? It also feels like balancing on a point, the smallest movement in any direction will cause enormous change!!! Let's try to make it a good one!!!
AC Answer: They are called "ant decapitating flies", flies lay eggs on ants and their larvae are endoparasitic on ants and sometimes other hymenopterans, with the head rolling off when the adult fly emerges. They're also called phorid flies or hump-backed flies. (Oh, and I vomited. These guys are just disgusting!)

Thank you Mikey. Thank you for making sure that the Queen ant didn’t suffer under your care. Ok
"Let's dive into the world of parasites " (ad appears) ah yes, I've seen these before...
Nature is both beautiful and brutal.
just a random note but it’s so interesting how we’ve evolved that feeling of our “skin crawling” when we see things like maggots as a way of our brain keeping us away from decay, it’s like our brain putting its foot down like “no we’re not getting closer to that, now squiggle with fear” lol
are you really saying humans evolved...
our ancestors has been chimps But one last thing it’s so interesting how we’ve evolved ITS NOT REAL we dont evolve alright?

I don't understand why this was the humane choice. Those baby maggots are gross to look at but have as much a right to exist as any other insect
I liked how the narrator at the end of the video clarified that he knew that those maggots are also just doing the best they can to survive.

Imagine you were a queen ant, growing maggots in your gaster, and you know its the end. it would be horrifying

Besides the gross maggot explosions, The aunt queen nurseries are so adorable! 😍 The way they stand over their babies is too cute.
Wait, if you froze the ant queen to stop her from suffering, where does the footage of them bursting out of a queen come from?
I was wondering the same thing, kinda confused there
He did mention only 8 of the 14 queens had founded a colony, so it's possible that another one had the same thing happened.
@@VelociraptorsOfSkyrim 14 queen ants, 8 cut the wings off (all of them startet to lay eggs) and 6 had the wings still attached , one died because of fungi and one had maggots so... maybe one of the 4 remaining antqueens had maggots to, but i don´t think so, it looks like he put the queen in the freezer for the shot and then recover her right after it :P
