I appreciate the transparency with the limitations and considerations in your review. I love these longer form introductory showcases you do with the new products. It’s nice to hear the perspective of the company before the reviewers get down to the nitty gritty and then we as consumers can better evaluate the pros and cons of what fits in our own home gyms, not just the glamorous “gym home” pole barn gyms. TLDR - Built in Bar is hollow to maintain the lower weight meaning the knurrling cant be as aggressive as a standalone bar / The Built in ONLY WORKS ON 49" Racks, BoS, Rogue, etc. BYOB is ideal for 49" down to 47" (REP) but takes more maintenance as it has a lot mroe bolts to monitor and upkeep to some degree. Pricing is the same because of the engineering and machined parts going into the BYOB brackets.
I've dropped tested 500 lbs with no issues. I've been loving training with it. Definitely need the bring your own bar brackets. I have some more ideas 😈
Very nice! Y love you gave the option to change the angle of the smith. I hope that in the future you offer also an option for a larger version more suitable for tall people with tall racks but I understand that probably most of the customers will choose the shorter version.
Great video. Looks like a great piece too and at a fair price. Also well thought out. This will be a winner in my opinion Keep up the good work BOS and you will be around for a long time.
Ordered this instantly and can't wait to use it. Thinking through some of the issues that were raised... Lack of counterbalance: * For accessories where you need light weight, the BYOB could take a technique bar. * For movements with lower ROM needs, reverse bands might work. * When you need a full ROM counterweight and don't want to take the time to swap bars, it might be feasible to rig up a DIY pulley counterweight. For lack of ROM: * Tall basement people already can't OHP, so welcome to the seated club. :) * As mentioned in the video, standing on a box for low pulling exercises. * Glute bridges would be tricky, but hip thrusts might be high enough. Exercises I got this for: * CALVES - after starting running at 50 and tearing a gastric in the Spring and a soleus in the Fall, calf raises have rocketed up the list of importance. Standing will let me sell my SSB. Seated it's almost impossible to get the perfect setup DIY, but this might work. * JM Press and other tri exercises - it never feels like I'm isolating the triceps 100%. * Sissy Squats - like tris, the quads might get isolated and cooked more than ever. This might also be an interesting option for belt squats, to straddle the bar and get the straight up-down. A lot of belt squat setups either have sway or pitch you forward. As part of my upcoming exercise database site, I'll be cataloging all the smith exercises I can find. I suspect there will be hundreds.
Smith machines have always been stellar in their own right. Only ignorant lifters turn up their noses at them and dog those who use them. Smith machines are a great option at times!
I already order with a manticore rack. I apricate the lighter bar for my wife since it is not counter balanced. I will also mount it on the outside much lower so that the wife can use it for hip thrust and rdls.
Would be cool to have the ability to add j-hooks to the outside of the sliding bracket. I know they would need to be prolonged to be able to fit the weight plates, but the ability to slide j-hooks up and down with free weights would be so nice.
Kaevon, (hopefully closed captioning spelled that correctly), It would be way better if there was a quick way to remove the bar. Can you please take a look at doing the double toggle latches like the VTS? I would love to buy one of these from you if you sort that out. It appears your approach with the long roller bearings is similar, so it would appear you could do that as well. I just need one where I can remove the bar quickly, (because my space is very limited in the city), and I really don't want to build my own with all the DF4900 parts.
It's super cool, but the "bring your own bar" honestly seem dumb... not really sure why people would want that over just a normal smith-machine bar, for what it is and is used for. That would only make sense if you could put it on when you need to use the smith machine and off when you don't.
I think the main draw is that a lot of our customers have a strong preference of exactly the type of knurling that's on their barbell. The BYOB version of the smith sold out much quicker than the standard version as well, so it seems to be the more popular version so far.
If you can make a taller version that would be awesome. More range of motion yes, I mainly want it so the bar can be high enough to be out of the way in the rack and i don't need to duck down. I have 100 inch rogue rack that can handle much taller. but even if its just 90 inch rack height that would be awesome.
Love the idea! Only downsides I really see: 1. ROM - the smith bar needs to be able to get lower to be closer to the ground for movements like hip thrusts, rows, RDL, etc... 2. Hook points facing inside - these should be on the outside of the rack so they don't encroach on the interior space. Or use a saw-tooth style latch point which doesn't take up much of the interior width. Right now, they can hit your elbows when benching if you're a little tall. I'm 6ft and have issues on my 48" wide 2" x 2" smith rack (44" interior width) which has more interior width than you'd get with a 49" wide 3" x 3" rack (43" interior width) as shown here. 3. Stopper for the hook rotation - couldn't quite tell but you generally want some sort of stopper so the hook can't rotate upside down and become difficult to re-rack Check out the Bolt Fitness Storm Series STINGER SMITH MACHINE ATTACHMENT as an example of a smith attachment which addresses the first 2 points although I don't think can be angled or used with your own bar nor can I tell if it has a stopper for the hook rotation. Still definitely a great solution for those that need it! Hope to see a leg press plate attachment and other accessories in the future.
Definitely some good points! Something for us to explore as we update this machine for future versions. We want to point out though that both BYOB and Standard versions have stoppers that prevent the hook from rotating upside down.
2. Most smiths have the hook points inside, and are often narrower than this. Doubt the hooks get in the way of your elbows, they're like 2-3", the rack is 49" wide and it's stemming from near the middle of the 3" upright, so there's probably at LEAST 42" space between the tips. But probably more importantly, they're well behind the bar shaft which is where your wrists would be, so that'd be awkward to even try to get your elbows that far behind your wrists to flair them out and get in the way with straight or angled smith bar path. Also if they were on the outside, you probably wouldn't be able to fit a regular bar/no BYOB comfortably due to bar width/rack width. 3. There is a stopper it's just hard to see
If you want it lower then mount it lower on the outside. If needed just make your thing for it sit on as a brace. That is what makes this machine so great. BOS is all about modularity, that is their strongest strength compared to their competitors.
@@Okcp12 You'd be surprised how much the pegs make an impact! I didn't think it would be a concern but I have a 2" x 2" all-in-one rack with smith that is 48" wide so it actually has more interior space than a 3" x 3" rack with 49" width (44" vs 43" inside) and the smith hook points are on the inside just like this BOS one and at 6ft tall my elbows definitely can hit them when bench pressing so I have to turn around and put my bench backwards, so my head is towards the outside/front of the rack to get around this. A saw-tooth design for the latch points or having the pegs on the outside fixes this problem, though the saw-tooth style would probably still allow for BYOB so may be the way to go. I guess you could also get around this by turning it around and installing it with the guide rods deeper in the rack and the hook points closer to the front so you wouldn't have to flip your bench around like I do. But ideally a smith would put the hook points on the outside like the RitFit M1 2.0 for a budget friendly option or just use a saw-tooth latching mechanism that doesn't take much width. It may not be as much of a concern if you're shorter, but definitely something that could be improved with future revisions!
With this installed, is there still enough room to move the trolley lever arms of a prx halo up and down the upright the smith attachment is installed onto or is the space gap too small to have lever arms on that upright?
There should still be enough of a gap, but be sure to reach out to our support team with the dimensions of your rack and trolley arms so they can properly assess whether or not the combination would work
@10:50 he mentions that the rack is 90" tall. Kinda looks like 84" tall, no? Like in the BoS Kollosus video. @BELLSOFSTEEL Still on the fence about the lack of height on these racks for lat-pull down.
You may be right, looks like he mistakenly called it a 90" Do you mean the lat pulldown using one of our rack attached lat pulldowns? We haven't had any issues with our customers not getting enough range of motion using a lat pulldown on our 84" racks.

@@BELLSOFSTEEL Cool, hopefully it could be added to the outside of the rack like in the video. Inside of the rack seems pointless to me because it would take too much room and then you can't use the inside of the rack to do any other exercises.
Would this work on your new modular Scorpius 60x60 line? Since you say it theoretically could fit the dimensions, but your current 60x60 racks aren't designed that way, I was just curious if you were planning on creating your Scorpius line with that kind of modularity and side holes similar to your Hydra/ manticore.

so on a full wall mount rack, like Hydra, that i mostly leave out would it be completely undoable if i only need to fold when i get in the attic? I realize i would either have to remove the bar or the brackets to fold but what about the support side?
That's an interesting one. It should be doable. There will be some added weight to the front, which might pull the rack forward which may cause it to drag along the floor, but if you remove the bar, it should still fit. You would need to fold out outwards instead of inward though.
Depending on the height of your rack and where you plan to mount it, it should fit. but please reach out to our support team with your rack's specifications so they can advise more definitively support@bellsofsteel.com
I really want to see someone push the angle modularity even further. Imagine the ease of vendetta lever arm trolley adjustability combined with angled smith… could create a good rack attached leg press vs the horrible vertical ones.

Awesome, this way you can easily do belt squats. Perfect
Can this fit on rep pr5000 width wide if I use byob option?
It should, but be sure to reach out to our support team with your rack's dimensions so they can assist you on making sure it should fit.

so on a full wall mount rack, like Hydra, that i mostly leave out would it be completely undoable if i only need to fold when i get in the attic? I realize i would either have to remove the bar or the brackets to fold but what about the support side?
That's an interesting one.
It should be doable. There will be some added weight to the front, which might pull the rack forward which may cause it to drag along the floor, but if you remove the bar, it should still fit. You would need to fold out outwards instead of inward though.
thanks for the reply. tempted to relocate the attic door but last time i did one i swore i would never again
are the front feet stabillizers you have on this rack compatible with the 60mm racks you guys sell?
Unfortunately not. Those are only available for the hydra and manticore 3x3 racks
Would this work on a titan t3 squat rack by chance?
Depending on the height of your rack and where you plan to mount it, it should fit.
but please reach out to our support team with your rack's specifications so they can advise more definitively

What about all the people who don’t have holes on the side of there uprights??
At this time, unfortunately it wouldn't work with those racks.
Get a drill and a few beers.
I see on the site, it will be not fit on 47'' width rack ? Need BYOB version for any rack (49'' wide) ? Thanks B.O.S
This is correct
You'll need the BYOB version to fit on a non 49" wide rack
Thanks for return! When the BYOB is available😋?
The hooks look like they barely latch with that BYOB version. Is that configurable?
Yes, that can be configured.
I really want to see someone push the angle modularity even further. Imagine the ease of vendetta lever arm trolley adjustability combined with angled smith… could create a good rack attached leg press vs the horrible vertical ones.
In some ways, this could just be the beginning.
@ if you ever invite the community for customer research and feedback, I’d love to participate
Man, this won’t fit on my Titan x-3 sad😢
It likely will fit on any 3x3 rack
Give up on the hair Kaevon, you'd actually look dope if you shaved it off, especially with the current beard length/shape.
I agree but my wife says my receding hairline fade makes me look cute
Those safeties are junk. Drop the bar on them and they pop off.
We've actually done several drop tests, it's why the sleeve on the bar is bent in one of our previous smith videos.
The safeties help up well!
