The days when I was sad and alone in Cali in the military Pat Metheny saved my life.

Wow! Through out my twenty journey in the military I shared the same sentiments. Can't wait to see him perform in Seattle in September! Ironically our first names are both Kevin. Thanks for sharing.

Kevin, I snuck a JVC walkman and a Still Life (Talking) cassette into the barracks during Basic/AIT back in the day! My kids grew up on Pat and Chick.

@@micapilgrimdaniel2752 After suffering a hemoragic ministroke in 2002, while in home rehab, I awoke one afternoon hilucinating for nearly 20 minutes. I could swear that I'd awoken at work and was on the phone with a customer coming in my right ear and JAWS, (Job Access With Speech) coming in my left. After 10-11 minutes or so, I began slowly to realize that I was actually in my living room in the recliner. (I'm totally blind, and that's what I use to hear both what I'm typing and reading), I was so confused. I finally called my sponsor and she convinced me that I was, indeed, there at home. She then suggested that I put on either Pat Metheny or Paul Winter. Well, the first tape I found was "Letter From Home", and I put it on. That was my favorite album, and my favorite song of all his songs is still "The First Circle." I hadn't heard it in several years and felt so ashamed, because I'd been going through some really dark times. I had to listen to it twice. It was like a true friend who's right there with me and never judged me. I cried a lot during the first listen, but the second time I listened to it, I knew I'd been so fortunate to have heard his music since 1978. The first interview I'd heard was in 1982, and he had my heart strings. I also knew I needed the courage to leave my employer, because my life was so much more important than that dead-end job. The stress was literally killing me. Pat's music truly brought me back from the brink!

Years ago in '82 or '83, and after buying everything the Pat Metheny Group had done beginning in the 70's (and seeing those guys in a crappy bar called the Green Onion in Ft. Collins, CO years before), the Group played at Red Rocks. It was a full moon night and we were all adults there that night. You could have heard a pine needle drop. He played a piece from First Circle and I swear, under that perfect full moon with perfect acoustics, I had a spiritual experience. It has lasted me a lifetime now at 70. But, I still miss Lyle.

The CD arrived on my doorstep today. I had no idea what it was about. At first I was put off that Pat wasn't the performer, but I understand and appreciate so much more now. This album is Metheny the composer, the teacher, the creator of his unique style and beauty through hearts and souls, hands and brains, of others.
No other musician/composer has reached out to lift so many other musicians as Pat Metheny, with the possible exception of Miles Davis.
A remarkable human being is Pat Metheny.

Is there any territory left that is not dug into by Pat ? He is the living example of how music as a whole should be perceived. No boundaries, genres or prejudices. Sole purpose is to service the music. we are all lucky to walk on earth with him in the same era. If him being present in our lifetime is not an inspiration alone , what else ?

The first time I had heard of or seen Pat Metheny was when he was introduced onto the stage at the huge Live Aid event in 1985 by Carlos Santana. Metheny had been voted best jazz guitarist a few times but was relatively unknown outside jazz circles.
I remember Carlos Santana introducing Metheny as one of worlds best guitarists.
He is only of those musicians that possesses a unique playing style and guitar tone, he is expressive and creative. The essence of a great artist

Back in the early 80's I interned at a jazz radio station where they streamed the jazz music played throughout the station. As I was opening the mail the DJ played the most enchanting music I ever heard and announced it was The Pat Metheny Group. I've been in love with Pat Metheny and the late Lyle Mays music ever since.

The "Pat Metheny Style of Playing the Guitar" is so insane fantastic that one might not even trying to perform his music. Here he has created a bridge between himself and so many many fantastic guitar players, who now can connect with the master himself. And the audience, including me, is just thrilled about the idea and how it sounds!

As always, Pat's 'aesthetic fingerprint' is readily apparent throughout these compositions. Regardless of which direction the spirit guides him (Orchestrion, baritone guitar, 42-string pikasso, trios, solos and on and on) there is a distinct 'Pat-ness' that radiates through all of his many musical voices. Any fan can hear it and identify it almost immediately, even if they (like me!) have no musical expertise.
