When me and my twin sister were little, we liked to think they were saying, “We want a batter, not a broken bladder!” Not sure why, but we thought it was hilarious!
One of my favorite memories from college is watching a blasted-drunk fratboy at a baseball game chant “we want a pitcher, NOT A BELLY ITCHER” and similar taunts next to the visiting team’s section, which was mostly their families lmao
My god this franchise was incredible, my friends and I would constantly fight over who got Pablo Sanchez on their team. You've unlocked a memory buried deep in my brain with this one.
The daycare I went to as a child had Backyard Baseball on its single Windows 95 computer, and kids would fight over who got to have Pablo on their team. Good times XD
>old Billiam endings "I'm tired, I'm stressed, I'm gonna get some sleep" >new Billiam endings "I'm gonna go have a drunken tantrum at a little league game" Now that's character development.
The moment you were going to point out a character for being OP, I instantly knew it was going to be fucking Pablo! I haven't played Backyard Baseball ever since I was little, but you never forget about Pablo, and his stats bar. Honestly, I really liked him because he was so good, and he was Hispanic like me. I never got into sports through Backyard Baseball though. I'm still not a fan of sports, but Backyard Baseball will always have a place in my heart.
You mentioning the word “jumpstart” has brought back an influx of memories. I’d love for you to tackle that series or at least some of the most popular of it since there's *so* many grade levels of games
Man, this takes me back. Backyard Baseball is one of the main reasons I'm still a fan of Baseball to this day. Kenny was my boy, I always found it so cool that despite him being in a wheelchair, he was still a fantastic player. Just a great series of games.
*core memory unlocked* Wow is the backyard games such a nostalgia trip. I used to play the hell out of backyard baseball and soccer especially. Never played the football game though
Learning the '95 Mariners inspired Humongous Entertainment to make a kids sports game brings a tear to my eye. Simply and truly miraculous. Edit: Oh my god, imagine being an EA dev trashing a Humongous dev for picking players from THE 2001 MARINERS for their fantasy team. Man that's gold.
I didn't even know one developer had such a profound effect on my childhood. They deserve much more credit creating all these classics for kids that didn't feel pandering or dumbed down.
agreed fully. loved these games. so much attention to detail, I used to love the starblaster mini game in spyfox. had nearly forgotten about it but was reminded
Billiam, you remind me of my father. You fill my life full of joy, laughter, and knowledge... then disappear again for months at a time. Love your videos!
I gasped SO loud when I saw this video in my sub feed. Would love to know why I adored Backyard Baseball specifically as a child when I never was a sporty kid. But watching this reminded me how much Humungous Entertainment charm was in it despite the lack of plot and character interaction. I do remember the most fun for me being the picking of the players, and I was always furious I could never get both twins on my team. What I wouldn't give to play it again as a 30 year old to see if I could actually win a single game 😂 Amazing video as always!!!!
I love the idea of a cute little hispanic kid who is also a God Of All Sports and pretends to be a native spanish speaker to avoid talking to his friends
There's an infamous picture of me where I was taking my kindergarten school picture, and I insisted on smiling like how Derek Jeter smiled in Backyard Baseball when you are choosing him for your team, so it was just me smiling with the left side of my mouth open. I looked like such a silly goober, and it's forever in my kindergarten yearbook lol. Anyway, totally with Billiam on this, these games ruled, and now I want to try and find a working version of the MLS Backyard Soccer game cuz I played that one the most.
6:37 While I always passed this series up when I was shopping for games (I don't like sports games, alllways been more for platformers and puzzle games) I've always noticed and appreciate the the diversity of the characters. It made it seem more accessible. I also appreciated how all the minority characters weren't just all the same color. Its really just the small things to make things more accessible and inclusive. 😊
Putt Putt, Freddy Fish, Pajama Sam, Reader Rabbit, Backyard Sports! All of these memories were stored deep in the back most wrinkle of my brain. This video brought it flying to the forefront of my consciousness. Thank you for that (,: ❤️
I remember playing backyard basketball and rollercoaster tycoon in daycare! I was always watching the older kids play while I waited for a turn. I always had the wheelchair kid on my team. What a blast from the past!
I just had the most intense rush of nostalgia in a while. I used to play Backyard Baseball for HOURS on end after my aunt sent me home with the copy she dug out that never got played. I loved that game so much, I made blue socks team emblems to put on my favourite shirt and hat. Thanks for reminding me of this classic!!
I was 4 years old playing Halo 1-2 and Brothers in Arms. But at my local library I couldn’t be convinced to leave when I was playing Backyard Baseball.
I played backyard baseball for the PlayStation 2 and was in love with it. Before even getting into the video, seeing Pablo Sanchez in the thumbnail let me know not only are you the goat of UA-cam, but you have true taste and are an expert sports analyst.
Backyard Baseball used to be LIFE for me. I’m still proud I played the entire season with just a few losses (looking back that was probably due to the difficulty curve). My batting order was Pablo Sanchez, Pete Wheeler, Mikey Thomas, Kiesha Phillips, Reese Worlington (who these days I would switch out with Jocinda Smith), Achmed Khan, Amir Khan, Tony Delvecchio, and Kenny Kawaguchi.
Out of all of the Backyard Sports games, Backyard Baseball was the one that I played the most. I always made drafting Pablo Sanchez to my team my top priority. I swear, everytime I hit the baseball with Pablo, it was a guaranteed home run.
Backyard Soccer, Backyard Baseball, Backyard Basketball, and Backyard Football were some of my favorite games growing up. Especially Soccer and Baseball, I literally adored those games as a kid.
I remember playing this game as a kid and being so invested I pissed myself because I didn't want to go to the bathroom... I repressed this until I watched this video
Love this franchise! Brought me so many hours of joy back in the day. Would love to see you tackle the JumpStart series of PC games that you mentioned…I played those when I was younger too!
Baseball and putt putt goes to the race shaped who I am today. Best part of baseball that hooked me was the progression of the stadium until your playing inside with all the spot lights. Also the fact you could hit the ceiling helped it feel even more special as it’s the only venue that has that feature
Id love a review of other humongous games if you're up for it! Freddy fish and the stolen conch was my favorite game for while as a kid. Got it free from a place called Great Clips for getting a haircut
Wow, I remember getting Freddi Fish from Great clips as well. Actually I wasn't sure if I was just misremembering it, because it seems so bizarre for a hair cutting place to hand out PC games.
I grew up in a religious household and wasn’t allowed to play video games- EXCEPT somehow I got my hands on a copy of this game and it blew my little mind. Shout out to backyard baseball!
Kinda funny hearing that Shawn Green was the most forgettable MLB player in backyard baseball for you, as almost everyone jokes about Bobby Higginson or Matty Cordova. Green was one of the faces of the Dodgers during that span of time with his most notable achievement being a 4-home run game that only 18 people have ever done. Also, he was the only Jewish ballplayer in backyard baseball 2001 which likely played a role.
6:40 Billiam, from one Zillennial to another, THANK YOU FOR POINTING THIS OUT. I'm tired of media that has us all as one shade of medium brown, instead of showing that our skin color does indeed vary. For example, I'm dark brown, a little darker than Ricky Johnson in the game, but my brother is the same color as peanut butter and my sister is light brown.
The best humongous games that I had all thru my childhood and recently brought for my kids is BIG THINKERS FIRST GRADE. Spent hours at a time on it and learnt so much while having fun
The footage of the Jumpstart series with the VHS tapes brought back some very old memories for me. Specifically the tape with the terrifying men with very pointy noses and creepie smiles.
I remember playing this game at my summer camp. All of us kids would crowd around the PC waiting for our chance to play, it was really fun to even watch. I’m thankful I got to experience it, as it’s likely kids today don’t do that sort of thing, with iPhones and what not.
I had backyard football 2006 with donte Culpepper and backyard skateboarding with Andy McDowell (not 100%) and spent many hours playing at my grandparents house after supper as my "treat"...miss them and cherish the memories they helped create
I am not a sports person so i am suprised to realize how much nostalgia I have for this game, especially the charchters. I dont even think i played it much, mostly watched my brothers play it. Which to be fair, is true of a lot of video games
I was OBSESSED with Putt Putt Saves the Zoo!!! We only had it at our grandparents' house desktop so anytime we spent the night there we'd replay it for like the 30th time and it was still just as fun
I never played it, but I did run the Movies/Music/Games department at my local Target when this series was a thing. And I can confirm it had a VERY devoted fan base who were always there for every new release. They’d often tell me how these people were some of the best but often ignored sports games at that time.
Backyard Baseball was a huge jam of mine growing up, and on a level, it still is. I play MLB the Show nowadays, and love playing the career mode. And I have always created each Backyard Baseball character to the best of my ability as how I would see them as young adults, and placed them all randomly in each team. My way of continuing to play with them, and see which ones can go all the way.
I always really love seeing which Humongous game a person pack-bonded with. For me it was Pajama Sam, and for my sibling it was Spy Fox. And you were a Putt Putt kid! I mean obviously we all played them all, but it's great that one just Sticks. Thanks for giving Humongous the love it deserves!
I used to play these games at the library computers that they had for kids. The computers weren't hooked up to internet, just had games downloaded to them. I still remember the baseball one always had a kid say "we want a batter not a broken ladder!"
4:55 Fun fact, before the Mariners rallied to have that great finish in 1995, they were on the brink of moving to Tampa Bay had the new stadium measure not passed.
I LOVED the OG Backyard Baseball. It had so much personality, also Pablo can murder a baseball straight out of the park, kid's got beefy beefcake arms.
In the first minute of this video, childhood memories I had completely forgotten were brought back to the surface. I played so many hours of Freddy Fish, Spy Fox and Pajama Sam. How could I have forgotten that joy?
My first exposure to these games I'm pretty sure was the Backyard Basketball on PC played in like a 5th or 6th grade classroom one day. But my biggest memories were the GBA Backyard Football (which I still have) and Backyard Skateboarding, both of which, as a kid who didn't even care for sports, I played a TON of. I remember consistently scoring like 100+ in Football every game.
When you mentioned the JumpStart games, the JumpStart Toddler song made a flying leap from my long term memory. I’m 29 years old. And I haven’t played that game since I was… well. A toddler.
I moved as a kid and had a hard time making friends so I just hung out at the local library. They had these computers just for children with games like this on them (also some Amazon game and Oregon Trail). I spent a good two years of weekends and holidays just playing these games. I must of sunk hundreds of hours into the baseball game alone lol.
a little less than a month ago i hung out with a group, not my regular bunch. they all liked ea sports games and and im more of an anything else sort of guy but i brought up how backyard baseball was one of the only sports games i ever played and we all hit by nostalgia and mentioned how awesome it was.
Only ever played Backyard Baseball growing up. When I found out they made several others I was already an adult not interested in sports. Still have a lot of nostalgia especially for the Power ups. I specifically remember loving the power ups and wondering how to get more JUICE
Backyard Sports! Oh my god, I loved this franchise when I was young! I had Backyard Football on Gameboy, and Backyard Baseball on the Game Cube. I can't even begin to perceive how much time I sunk into those two games!
childhood right here! I remember playing these games along with Dr. Brain, cereal games, Disney games, where on earth is carmen Sandiego, Oregon trail and 3D Dinosaur adventure: save the dinosaurs
Oh snap we're doing this ? Are you covering the Humongous Games lineup? Dude please do Spy Fox , Putt Putt and Freddie Fish next. All of these games were my childhood memories and I'm trying to reintroduce them to my kids
Just gonna put this here in case I forget to watch but I will say that I love that Billiam is just that likeable nostalgic items guy, not to be confused with the other gentleman with the tie
Man, I used to play the Backyard games all the time and never realized that it was made by Humongous Entertainment. They really were the GOAT of early 2000's family friendly PC games
Just by mentioning the games frankly fish and putt putt unlocked core memories. Especially putt putt, I remember vividly spending hours on those games grabbing hot chocolates to give to people
There are several methods to getting massive points in the earlier Backyard Baseball games. First of all, as tempting as it is to select Pablo first on your roster, you’re wasting his potential. You should always pick him fourth. That way, you have three players on base (if they can manage it) when he unleashes his grand slam! Another tempting strategy is to spam the Power pitch or use the special ones. You should stick to curve balls that you aim at the lowest corners of the screen depending on the direction of the pitch (you aim inside, not around the CPU kids, if that makes sense). If your pitcher is good, these balls land in the strike zone and the CPU kids usually try to hit them. When your pitcher tires, they sometimes land as balls, but if you’re playing the game right, you may already have extra juice on hand (people like to spam this as soon as they earn it, but that’s a bad idea). Another strategy is to have your players either hit bunts or grounders (or the special bunts and grounders when earned), unless you unlocked the Aluminum Power (definitely use that on players with average skill levels because players like Pablo don’t need it and terrible players may waste it altogether). Almost exclusively using weaker batting styles seems like a losing strategy but it’s not. The CPU kids take longer to catch these balls and stealing bases in between these plays is a breeze. My twin sister has a game that she finished where her team scored either just under or just over 200 points. It took her weeks to finish the game because it kept crashing during some plays. I currently have a game I started a few years ago (and more or less gave up on) that’s at around 172 points. It crashes after every play now, so I think I’m virtually locked from completion… Glad to see you post a video about one of the greatest game franchises of all time! My sister and I got our original copy of Backyard Baseball in a cereal promotion! We found MLB version many years later at a thrift store! Many, many, many hours spent playing these classics! But Backyard Soccer and Backyard Basketball are great too! I know people think Pablo is the god of all sports, but I beg to differ! My twin has a Backyard Soccer team where she exclusively lets Ricky Johnson score goals! The other players can assist him, but if anyone accidentally scores, she restarts from the last save point! I think she had an 18-0 game at one point using just Ricky! He’s the quiet, unassuming, shy black boy with a football head! You don’t think to pick him in any of your games, but he excels at soccer! On a final note, Lani Minella (the voice actress for Rouge the Bat before 4Kids replaced her) plays a character or two. In Backyard Soccer, she voices Sally Dobbs, and, if I’m not mistaken, Sunny Day!
My friend and I played this so much in elementary school. I just remember we’d get pissed at each other if either of us snagged Pablo as our first pick.
I absolutely loved backyard baseball as a child. I had a perfect season one time, and it was one of my biggest achievements as a child. I wish we still owned that computer so I can go back and play with my perfect team.
I played this game a ton as a kid, i still play it to this day, 12 years later Baseball 08 on ps2 probably has more hours than a lot of AAA games i have
I remember this game got a surprising amount of play on me and my friends computers, even though we mostly played games geared older audiences like Diablo. It had a fun gameplay for the time with an art style that popped out. Great vid.
biggest strat in Backyard Baseball 2003, when fielding, after getting the ball just KEEP passing it back and forth between bases as much as you can till that kid tries to run another base. get them in a pickle till you can get them out. never let a clean hit make it home.
I loved this franchise as a kid. I had Baseball 2001, Soccer, Basketball, and Hockey. And fun fact, I never used Pablo Sanchez. I know, shocker. I was just ignorant of his hidden awesomeness. Mainly with Baseball 2001 as the only boys on my team were ones from the MLB.
Holy crap I remember the baseball game! I didn't own but my cousins who lived baseball did and we got a major kick out of it. I hadn't thought of these games in so long but I remember those character designs the moment I saw them. Thanks for this!
Backyard Sports games were always surprisingly competent arcade style games. Backyard Football was in heavy rotation on my GBA… when I was in high school 😂
I swear I haven't touched Backyard Baseball in at least fifteen (if not more years) and honestly remembered Pablo's name as the absolute best character for the game.
My sister won a Backyard hockey game calling in to Radio Disney years ago. I think we played it once or twice then stopped. Still cool to think back to.
I remember this game. I used to always get mad because I could only play it at school or my local library so I after choosing players and a team I could barely have time to play the game or finish it
Two in a week, cause I think you're cute ;)

Pajama Sam….. all these games flooding back into my memory bank….
Im so glad someone is acknowledging these games. ESPECIALLY you.
childhood right here! I remember playing these games along with Dr. Brain, cereal games, Disney games, where on earth is carmen Sandiego, Oregon trail and 3D Dinosaur adventure: save the dinosaurs
a wheelchair user character being included in this old kid’s game is unreasonably exciting to me lol like that is so cool????
Oh snap we're doing this ? Are you covering the Humongous Games lineup? Dude please do Spy Fox , Putt Putt and Freddie Fish next. All of these games were my childhood memories and I'm trying to reintroduce them to my kids
Just gonna put this here in case I forget to watch but I will say that I love that Billiam is just that likeable nostalgic items guy, not to be confused with the other gentleman with the tie
Ah yes, Linkara
I loved backyard baseball. How they each asked to be on my team was so fun, and I always put the twins together because they always asked
Man, I used to play the Backyard games all the time and never realized that it was made by Humongous Entertainment. They really were the GOAT of early 2000's family friendly PC games
Backyard Baseball for the PC and GBA was certainly my jam back in the day ⚾️
Just by mentioning the games frankly fish and putt putt unlocked core memories. Especially putt putt, I remember vividly spending hours on those games grabbing hot chocolates to give to people
the way you said "not helping" after pablo was like "i learned spanish in school!" had me cracking up
Going to the public library and borrowing this game was my entertainment for 3 years as a kid.
Seeing this game. Oh the nostalgia. It used to be rented at my local library. It was a ton of fun.
It crashes after every play now, so I think I’m virtually locked from completion…
Glad to see you post a video about one of the greatest game franchises of all time!
I played this game a ton as a kid, i still play it to this day, 12 years later
Baseball 08 on ps2 probably has more hours than a lot of AAA games i have
Holy crap, those old commercials take me back. Huge nostalgia bomb
The fight between who got first pick for Pablo Sanchez used to ruin friendships back in the day. Those were fond memories with the Backyard series.
I remember this game got a surprising amount of play on me and my friends computers, even though we mostly played games geared older audiences like Diablo. It had a fun gameplay for the time with an art style that popped out. Great vid.
Please talk more about Humangous. So many memories of Putt-Putt.
biggest strat in Backyard Baseball 2003, when fielding, after getting the ball just KEEP passing it back and forth between bases as much as you can till that kid tries to run another base. get them in a pickle till you can get them out. never let a clean hit make it home.
As a longtime fan of your content AND someone who was obsessed with the Humongous Collection as a kid this video got me so incredibly hyped.
Backyard Baseball was my jam in the early 2000's. I kinda thought that I had imagined the whole series for a while.
Holy crap I remember the baseball game! I didn't own but my cousins who lived baseball did and we got a major kick out of it. I hadn't thought of these games in so long but I remember those character designs the moment I saw them. Thanks for this!
This was my favorite game growing up and I played it all day after school. Pablo Sanchez was a beast!!!
Backyard soccer was my favorite. There was also that game with kids that had a aztec adventure. I cant remember that one
Oh man, backyard baseball was such a classic, good times fighting (sometimes physically) with my brothers over who gets to use the family computer.
My sister won a Backyard hockey game calling in to Radio Disney years ago. I think we played it once or twice then stopped. Still cool to think back to.
I remember this game. I used to always get mad because I could only play it at school or my local library so I after choosing players and a team I could barely have time to play the game or finish it
Pablo Sanchez is best character
you just brought back a deeply seeded memory that i didn't remember having. backyard baseball was the best back in the day! spitballs all game!
