  • Fanboy Hype be like: GUYS THE MK4 SUPRA IS WAY BETTER THAN THE MK5, GUYS THE NEW GTR IS JUST A DRIVING COMPUTER. ALSO THE GR COROLLA CAN DESTROY EVERYTHING STILL. BRO, BRO, LISTEN TO THIS: SILVIA'S ARE TOTALLY WORTH $100K!! IT'S CALLED KNOWING THE MARKET BRO! I SWEAR! YOU'RE JUST A POOR HATER!
No...they're not poor haters, they're people with brains and also former children turned into adults with shattered dreams. Imagine 5 years ago, not having your license, still studying school, now able to finally drive and finally make money...only to see all the favorite cars you admired JUST A MERE FIVE YEARS AGO, become more than TRIPLE their price. That is not "Inflation" or "just the market bro" it's a bunch of unreasonable morons chasing a golden hype goose. Nothing can go up forever, whenever this bubble finally bursts, my heart goes out to all the REAL CAR GUYS who DESERVE to own these cars. Keep holding out, stay strong kings. When these broke clout bois finally cave and sink to their 29% APR when the market crashes, these cars will be as good as yours.

I love import cars. i am a JDM Fan. The reason JDM became a big thin is because Japanese tuners turned "cheap" sportscars in to insane builds.
Nowerdays the prices of these 20-30 year old beat up cars is insane.
buying a jdm car for such high prices is literally the opposite of what JDM culture is about.

But do I really care about that modern sports car? Nope, I simply do not care about cars that I remotely have no interest in, especially when I think car manufactory is a little too wasteful, I probably will never even take care of that Camry myself and just run it to the mechanic everytime it has issues. Hell my V6 Galant TT is practically worthless in my country because gas, its parts are rare/difficult to work on but it claps muscle cars here and there. Did I buy it because of those things? I've been watching the Skyline market since day 1 of US legality all the way back in 2015.
What the market has become now is not what I ever could've imagined. I expected growth in value within the JDM market but not to the extent to which we see today.
Back when they were still new I was content that while I was behind on having enough spare cash to afford my dream R32 GTR, the usual range of $20k to $28k tops if it was moderately to highly modified seemed just fine to work with given the age and mileage of many of these cars.
Now I've been basically priced out of the market I've put 7yrs into researching and learning about and by the time I've got the spare cash up front to meet the new market demand, I may already be priced out of it again as there's only so many of these cars to go around at the end of the day.
Worst we nearly saw JDM scene wise (happened this past week) was a MKIV Supra up on BaT that did get withdrawn in the final days of auction after people dug up the JP Auction records and found that someone rolled back the odometer ~170,000kms. BaT did withdraw it but even that Supra in a poor state of care for the rust on it still pulled nearly $50k in bids with no reserve (and possibly could've ended sale higher than where it was stopped before being withdrawn).

Now ?? Literally last week there's an ads for 1999 Skyline GT-R V-Spec R34 and owner was asking 600k USD, and that's non-Nur version. Also last year, there's a Skyline GT-R Z-Tune R34 (Thailand) sold to new owners, rumour that it was sold between 1.5 - 2 mil USD. So IF the rumour of the price sold was true then it's 10 x of the original brand new price
I think at this time, buying used Ferrari 458 might be the cheaper option since it cost 350k - 500k depend on condition

Doug DeMuro is one of my favorite car channels. Love his reviews, humor and his personality, but I can’t stand him getting excited over used cars rising in value. Maybe because he’s the founder of a car auctions site called Cars and Bids, but Doug is responsible for making cool cheap cars more unaffordable day by day. I’m tired of him praising cars that brings “big money” even though the buyer probably think twice before spending it all, but also praising the seller for well, selling their car solely because of money. People who see cars as an “investment” is absolutely stupid, and I’m fed up with it. And also talking about his stupid auction site, he rewards flippers, another group of sellers that I hate more. I’ve seen countless Hummer EV’s, Rivians, C8 Corvettes, Broncos, or other new cars being sold THIS EARLY after purchasing it. If they ordered a Rivian or the Hummer, then keep it, they literally ordered it and now selling it after like a month owning it solely because of money. Like why tf would you spend more then $250k on a truck? Ordering it and being patient for it to deliver to you is worth more then $250k. It’s literally cheaper then spending $250k on an electric truck. Nothing upsets me more then flippers and people getting excited over cars that they’ll never afford. Doug defended these stupid flippers and their stupid behaviors many times, and it really upsets me.
I love Doug as a UA-camr. I think that he is a good reviewer because I love his humor. But him and his viewers are a problem. They literally get excited over cars rising in value that they will never ever buy. Doug recently said that he will never spend like $100k on a Rivian or $250k on a Hummer EV, but still he gets excited when car values skyrocket, and rewards these silly flippers trying to make a profit in a terrible way. I hope people wake up one day realizing that getting excited over cars they’ll never ever afford is a stupid stupid idea.

I personally love Japanese sports cars. I have loved them for all my life. But the hype around them right now is just absurd. 20k for a beaten, 260,000km, non SR20 200SX is absolutely insane. The same goes for all the other JDM's, they've more than doubled their price since the early 2010's. One ridiculous example is the old gen Toyota Corolla TS. 192hp with an unreliable engine (2ZZ) and they are unreliable and prone to oil leaks and other engine problems (the Celica TS has the same problem and same engine). You could buy a decent one for about 2.5k euro back in 2018, which was fair considering the amount of problems the car could give. Now there are dealers and hypeboys selling them for, I wish I was making this up, 10,000 EURO with over 250,000km. I really hope that some sense gets knocked into these people that sell these old beauties for such absurd prices. The only thing I can recommend is simply not buying them and ignoring the offers for more than the cars worth, especiallyif it's in bad condition. If more car enthusiasts do this, the hypeboys and dealers will eventually realise that they will never sell them until they lower the price.

Barn find is probably the best option, found a White FC the other day for 2700 dollars in need of some serious work. But the FC is my dream car so that would be my option, an already built one is about 20K here and jpn imports is far more expensive nowdays.

Ive been keeping tabs every now and then on the listings in my price range in my area over the last 5 years. Its funny seeing the effects of the hype tax. WRX came and went. Then is300, then integras, then preludes. People are just settling for worse and worse stuff. Now i could sell my 03 corolla shit box with 200k miles for 3-4k and nobody would think anything of it.

What's crazy is that I own a E36 as of 2022 and I'm fortunate enough to have one. But if the day came for me to sell it, it would be for a fair price and not some made up price that's unrealistic. This is why I have a love for oddball euro cars like Volvo, Saab, European Diesel cars, etc. Even some oddball American and Australian cars.
I don't hate JDM cars but I cant look at them the same way as what they used to be a decade or more ago.

Thank you! Thank you for saying this and hope this common sense argument seeps into the minds of fanboys out there. A modern Toyota 86 will be a much better investment than a 30 year old Skyline. Be smart with your money. As a starter car, invest in something that you will get a joy out of for a lot longer than a cost inflated beater that you are going to have to spend more time and money on.

I've been driving a 1992 NSX for 16 years now, I bought it in 2006 for $1,200. it only had 200 miles on it. I've heard people call it a supercar, I just bought it because my Honda Del Sol broke, and I was broke. I'm sad that many people won't get to experience classic Japanese sports cars.

Also what better way to prove that the market is fucked by the fact that right now my family could sell our old CVT equipped 88,000 km 2012 Altima 2.5SL that we've owned since late 2012 for close to $10,000 CAD.

Honestly the Skyline GTRs have already doubled in price as soon as they became legal in the USA. Americans never had a chance. Unless you were the few who bought them several years before the 25 year rule. But then you had to fork over expensive storage fees for years plus the full price of the car to some dealer in Japan and not even legally own the car until several years later when they become import legal which is quite risky for most. Although, I regret not buying an R34 GTR in like 2018 when they were still 70K. But 5 or more years not having possession of the car put me off.
