Music theory is all about taking the unconscious and intuitive emotional effect music has on us and explaining it systematically. While many people find it dry and boring, it is as much about human-ness and artistry as it is about the pure numbers or confusing terminology. When you see someone like Charles who gets super excited about this and tries to make it relatable to the average music listener, it reminds you of something like a great science communicator: someone who takes something that is usually detached, distant, and inaccessible to general people and makes it relevant, fun, and exciting.

Really cool video, I saw in an interview with Bruno Mars that he makes this kind of music also for musicians. And he has done it with this song, it's a masterpiece.
its just crazy how complicated concepts can be brought to the mainstream music, its like a higher level from understanding complicated stuffs. Reminds me of how Stevie Wonder creates Sir Duke and insert weird chords here and there yet still sounds familiar and easy to listen to

One thing i give them big props for is that they somehow keep finding the most satisfying 70s sounds that no one uses anymore and use them perfectly. Leave the door open had that lovely little crackling wind down noise at the start, and skate has that very 70s twangy guitar that sounds.very citar like. It's.really neat

This is the comment I was looking for when I heard that major 6th chord (especially the whole ii-V-iii-VI progression) - that chord is super typical of Japanese City Pop (and even a lot of K-Pop these days) and I *love* it 🤩
It's a great example of how new information can be built upon and come to a resolve. Nothing feels like it's hanging solo. The vocals also lend to the pieces musicality. They continue the melody between the chords. At least from what I heard upone first listen.

Love the passion you put into explaining and breaking down these tunes man!! Really refreshing and a good and productive way of using my phone hahaah much love!!
Man it amazes me how some people can capture the sounds easily and replay it in their instruments. I was never trained musically so this is basically magic to me :D
Charles: getting worried that the implications of some of the chords have F in them somewhere or something
Me: I like your funky words jazzy man
I literally saw Anderson Paak in my visit to Hawaii on the Diamond Head Trail last week! And wasn't sure if it was actually him, BUT IT WAS HIM :((
I'm so many miles away from mainstream music, I just get contact with it through your videos. Good to see there's still quality around =)
i am still learning music theory and don't a lot of what he is talking about, but its cool to see a jazz pianist get excited about a well crafted music that i like. it makes me appreciate the song even more.
Really cool video, I saw in an interview with Bruno Mars that he makes this kind of music also for musicians. And he has done it with this song, it's a masterpiece.
its just crazy how complicated concepts can be brought to the mainstream music, its like a higher level from understanding complicated stuffs. Reminds me of how Stevie Wonder creates Sir Duke and insert weird chords here and there yet still sounds familiar and easy to listen to
I know nothing about music theory. I can naturally harmonise when I sing a lot to songs, but I have no idea what notes I'm singing or anything like that. I love seeing how passionate Charles is towards music, you can just feel his happiness whilst playing and it's super adorable.
I really love your breaking down for songs. I have been studying Music Theory for a while and your videos helped me to broaden my knowledge more.
I love it when you get so excited about this kind of stuff! Those harmonies are B E A utiful!
Whenever I see Charles just jam out to something and really feel the music it makes me happy, and then he explains WHY we enjoy it and I get even more of a appreciation for the music besides just saying "It sounds cool.". Even though I have no clue what a sus chord is, it makes me good.
i love the joy you get when reacting to silk sonic!!
Great analysis as usual man! What I love is how there's absolutely 0 F chords in this song, yet it still sounds like it's in F due to the chord choices and structures of the 251's as you mentioned. Genius!
I grew up with punk and hardcore and that's mostly what I still listen to...that being said, this channel has turned me on to so much interesting and different (to me) music. Great videos Charles! Love it!!
I love seeing young musicians get wowed about this style of music. I was just like this when i heard Steely Dan, Swing out Sister and Basia.
I’m loving the smooth 70’s Philly Soul vibe! I hear the Stylistics and Spinners and MFSB from my youth ❤️. Nice breakdown of the jazz chord progressions!
Excited Charles when discovering the V chord = Best Charles
One thing i give them big props for is that they somehow keep finding the most satisfying 70s sounds that no one uses anymore and use them perfectly. Leave the door open had that lovely little crackling wind down noise at the start, and skate has that very 70s twangy guitar that sounds.very citar like. It's.really neat
your excitement for the music itself rather than the fact that it just "sounds good" really makes me want to take music more seriously so I can feel your excitement for music! Your excitement is so contagious lmao - thank you for your knowledge and genuine appreciation and understanding of music!!!
Your channel is quickly becoming my favorite channel on the platform. The chord theory and breakdowns you provide are absolutely brilliant. Love it, man…keep on keepin on.
Love this breakdown man. I have a little bit of musical background but just to realize that this is different/better than anything else coming out in mainstream music currently. So my instincts are right, and getting to watch a really good musician like yourself show me the bones of what makes it that way is just awesome. Thanks for this service, it’s very appreciated. Cheers!
I love their passion for what they do, and I love your passion for what you do
Day 10 of asking you to check out City Pop cause you'll definitely love its jazz/funk influences and their s p i c y chord progressions, also the fact that even though it was invented in 80s Japan, it still holds up amazingly well today!!
great suggestion, im sure Charles would love this
An analysis of Plastic Love would be great!
This is the comment I was looking for when I heard that major 6th chord (especially the whole ii-V-iii-VI progression) - that chord is super typical of Japanese City Pop (and even a lot of K-Pop these days) and I *love* it 🤩
I really hope he checks out city pop and does a video or two on it such amazing music and singing in that genre
I hope he sees my comment one day, until then I'm gonna keep commenting on his videos to check it out xD
It's a great example of how new information can be built upon and come to a resolve. Nothing feels like it's hanging solo. The vocals also lend to the pieces musicality. They continue the melody between the chords. At least from what I heard upone first listen.
Just came here from watching the Solos That Almost Made Me Quit Piano video and I had an idea that I'd love to see you do Charles! You're a great teacher, so I'd love to see a video where you use the practice tips you've shared to learn a difficult piece you've always wanted to play!
I'm so glad that music is taking this direction. Extremely interesting and complex musical sounds while still maintaining mass appeal.
As a pianist, your videos get me so excited! It's amazing to see a breakdown of the complex chord progressions. Keep it coming!
I appreciate someone who understands and can break down music with this detail, along with the recognition for it in mainstream music.
Ever since the song came out I have been waiting for this video!
It's interesting hearing people say they liked leave the door open more becuase skate was the most exciting tune I've listened to in a while. It's such a fun ride and I immediately loved it
I’ve been waiting for this video. Thank you for always providing insightful takes on songs!
I once saw an older man saying "oh I don't remember who sings this!". They're bringing great music again!
Oh my goodness I find it so so impressive to see you listen to something and then just play it. Absolutely love this reaction. Truly incredible
This video is so good, mainly because it was one of the first moments I can recall where the music theory actually made sense. I've been attempting to teach myself theory, and when he said " 3, 2, 6, 5" I was able to stop and think of all the notes in that scale, and when he confirmed what I was thinking I felt so proud of myself. Thank you sir, for all the help you've given me in my musical journey.
I've been waiting for half a century for pop music to come back to this. It was worth it.
Man great video! And I love the bits where you just accompany the song on the piano, it really helps me listen to the harmony.
I've been waiting for this ! I discovered you with your analysis to Leave the door open, and this was as good !
I am not music literate, but I love listening to you explaining the different music chords with such enthusiasm
I think packaging complex stuff while keeping it easy listening is something incredible.
as an adhder i REALLY keep seeing the ways my brain gets excited about things and vibes out to exciting new things like charles does and gushes over the 'smallest' things in such details. i dont mean to be inappropriate by saying this; dont mean to be overstepping, but i just feel so seen in this sort of thinking and feeling that it makes me wonder :)
I checked your channel everyday when did you breakdown this song. And the day has come. I know you are gonna be excited as i am when hearing this song.
Brilliant analysis! Love the song and this added so much.
Fabulously insightful and informed! Thank you Charles. I love Paak and Mars writing.
Been looking for this, thank you Charles
Thank you for doing what you do, you have such passion, even though most of us don't understand half of it we get it through your energy and enjoy watching all videos from the happy birthday to the whitney houston´s national anthem.
Please listen to blast off by them! It’s SOOO GOOD. One of my all time favorite songs!
Awesome video Charles! I'm always amazed by how you manage to figure out the chords and the harmony of these songs so effortlessly and how you explain the theory in such a captivating way.
Love Silk Sonic and Love your breakdowns. Have not clue of what you are talking about but you are so excited about it, make me excited too!
